Most people don't know that core stability can greatly improve overall joint mobility and stability. That doesn't just mean performing abdominal exercises, but drills that really enhance core stability like Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) concepts of diagonal patterns.
These patterns enhance our proximal stability. As the research explains, “Proper muscle activation is achieved through generation of energy from the central segment or core, which then transfers the energy to the terminal links of the shoulder, elbow, and hand. The kinetic chain is best characterized by 3 components: optimized anatomy, reproducible efficient motor patterns, and the sequential generation of forces.”
Then there is a 2006 paper in Sports Medicine that explains why the core is so essential, “Core muscle activity is best understood as the pre-programmed integration of local, single-joint muscles and multi-joint muscles to provide stability and produce motion. This results in proximal stability for distal mobility, a proximal to distal patterning of generation of force, and the creation of interactive moments that move and protect distal joints.”
That is why the drills we cover in today's video are great examples of taking these concepts from corrective exercise to performance training.

You started the chop from the opposite side with the sandbag, right to left, than with the dumbbell, left to right. Apples and oranges, no?

Lifts/chops can be performed on either side. The point is how the tools can impact the outcome and how we should use tools in ways to enhance the diagonal patterns not create potentially compensatory patterns.
