    I love that you guys are scanning and having classes at the same time, so it probably sticks to your brain so much better! When I was in school we did all our classes first before scanning in lab. We only focused on scanning during lab. But it’s so exciting to hear your experience! I’m proud of you for making it through your first month! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Keep going strong! Can’t wait to see more of your videos! 💖 SonoGes.

      Thank you for your support, and I'm so happy you enjoyed the video! It is definitely helpful scanning and learning the anatomy at the same time to get a really good idea of what the anatomy actually looks like, and what the relationships are.

    What’s your take on students having jobs while in this program? I’ve heard people say it’s difficult to work & study effectively etc

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 роки тому +8

      This is a great question and one that you will probably get a lot of different answers to. Personally, I do have a job, and I am not the only person in my program who does. I have always had a job since I was 14, so I am used to balancing work and school well. Being a full time student instead of part time obviously limited my availability at work, but I saw no reason to stop working all together unless it started affecting my grades (which it has not). Luckily my employer is very flexible, and was happy to accommodate me. I am in school Mon-Fri 8:30am to roughly 3:30pm and then I study for about 3 hours in the evening. I work on Saturdays and study in the evening. Then Sundays I have somewhat of a social life lol and more studying. I do miss out on open lab on Saturdays, so I make sure I go as much as I can during the week to practice scanning. Having a job while in an ultrasound program is definitely doable, but it takes a lot. I've settled into this routine that works for me and I personally don't find it too stressful, but thats just me. Hope this was a helpful perspective!

      @@JMaeSono What is your job or a flexible job to take while in school? Thank you for the info!

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 роки тому +3

      I work at an Eye Dr's office. I am usually at the front desk checking patients in/out, answering phone calls etc. I also fill in as a technician and do the preliminary vision testing when needed. I've been in this position for 4ish years, and again I was really lucky to have the opportunity to keep the same job and just switch to working only on Saturday's. I would say that for someone in ultrasound school who wants to have a job, you need one that you don't have to take any work home, and you obviously need one that will be flexible with your schedule, so the business should be very well staffed so there is always coverage and people willing to change up their schedules. It should also be a low stress job, something you feel comfortable at doing and makes you happy, because you will have enough stress with school.

    How many hours do you have to do for clinicals? Do y’all work with IVs?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  4 роки тому +1

      You should definitely apply, it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. For my program which is 5 semesters, we do roughly 1,200 clinical hours ( I don't recall the exact number) over 8 rotations. Sonographers do work around things such as needles and scalpels, although typically the sonographer's role during the procedure (such as a biopsy) is to guide the physician in their instrument usage via the ultrasound images, not to insert a needle, or make an incision themselves. Hope this was helpful! And I'm so glad that you enjoyed my video!

    What tips and advice you can give for a student that is trying to get into the program of sonography?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  4 роки тому +1

      Most importantly, I would say do your research. Find out exactly what prerequisites you need to take and in what order you should take them to set yourself up for success. Take advantage of any "bonus points" if your school offers them such as taking extra healthcare related classes as prerequisites , getting letters of recommendation, volunteer hours etc... Figure out the best way you study so you can make mostly As in your prerequisites, whether its taking and re-writing notes, drawing/labeling pictures and diagrams, forming a study group etc... Study for your TEAS test early so you will be well prepared (if your school requires it). Overall just work hard and it will pay off. Good luck! If you haven't already, you should check out my first video "How I Got Into Sonography School" for more information.

    Is it possible to do this program while working ?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 роки тому +1

      I work on saturdays and it hasn’t affected my grades or anything. The program is full time so you won’t have a lot of time to work, we are in class Monday-Friday 8am-4pm and on clinical days depending on your site hours can be like anything 10am-7pm, your site and hours will change every couple weeks so it’s not a consistent schedule either which would make coordinating with a job hard. Is it possible? Yes. Is it the best option? No. One of my former classmates who was working during the week late evenings/ nights had to drop the program cuz she wasn’t able to progress with the rest of the class. So I would say if u have the option not to work, take full advantage of that because the DMS program is aaaallllooootttttt of time and effort inside and outside the classroom.

      Hey! So my classmates and I have been very fortunate that our program is currently face-to-face. Most sonography programs only take a limited number of students (mine has 16) so we are able to maintain social distancing guidelines in class and lab; desks 6ft apart, masks and gloves, plastic shield as a barrier b/w sonographer and "patient" (we scan each other in lab). The school in general has also made modifications to the campus to ensure health and safety. As far as clinicals, I know there was 1 or 2 sites that decided not to take students for a while earlier in the year, but luckily they decided to let students back right before clinical started. Hope this was helpful and I'm so happy you liked the video!

    Is the COVID vaccine required?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 роки тому

      Every program is going to be different. For mine the vaccine is now required. This is because clinical sites are requiring it for students to come and since we have to have our clinical hours to graduate we have to be vaccinated.

    is it easy so far?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  4 роки тому +9

      There are definitely good and bad days. I am doing very well in all of my classes, but I would not say it has been easy. I study for several hours every day after school to make sure I understand the material we covered that day and to be prepared for the next day. I go to open lab to practice scanning 3-4 days a week , 2-3 hours each day. We have multiple tests and quizzes and we have to submit scans for grades each week, as well as occasional assignments and projects. And, on top of all that we just started clinical so we are scanning real patients who's wellbeing depends on us. And I also have a part time job on the weekends. I work very hard to make sure I am succeeding in school. I've sacrificed time with my friends and family to pursue this career. There are days when my hard work pays off or I know I helped make a difference in a patient's life and those days seem easy, but there are other days where I feel a little defeated and have to just tell myself that its okay and move on, because I know I will eventually master a skill I may be currently struggling with, it just takes time and practice, and I know it will all be worth it when I graduate in 2 years and can spend the rest of my career improving quality of life for so many people and even potentially saving lives.
