  • My Version of the infamous ugly drum smoker. Works Wonderfully and was super simple and cheap. Here is a brief list of some of the parts I used on this build:
    1. 55 Gallon Drum. Prefer food grade but burn it out before use either way. I found mine at a large bakery factory for $5.00
    2. Black Pipe Nipples. (2) 18" lengths and (1) 3" length. All 1/2" diameter
    3. (3) 1/2" Shutoff valves to control air flow and temp.
    4. (1) 2 1/2" Threaded Black Pipe cut to any length you prefer to be used as chimney
    5. (1) 3/4" electrical conduit fitting for a wire pass through if you want digital probe

    6. Webber 22" grate for cooking surface

    7. (2) black pipe 1/2" 90 degree elbows

      Thanks appreciate it. Sorry yeah the lid clamp was from the jungle website. I just added it to the description. Thanks for the support.

    Very nice but the meat turn out great.
    Did you had to burn the inside paint, sand, and wash it to make it clean for safety?

    • @OptimisticGarage
      @OptimisticGarage  6 місяців тому +2

      Yes fill it with wood and burn for a few hours. All the interior exterior paint will burn off. Then wire wheel everything. Once complete you have a bare metal barrel. Use a high temp paint to coat the outside and spray Pam or olive oil on inside to prevent rust. Once you start using it you will build up a nice char inside that protects metal

      @@OptimisticGaragedo you need to repeat this process to build up a layer or is just once enough?

      @OptimisticGarage  5 місяців тому +1

      @@christopholies5617 once is enough. After 1 cook it will be nice and baked on.

    Might already be aware, but briquettes have a lot of filler/binders - if you want a more ash-free burn, lump charcoal is the way to go. Curious how pellets would work in this - you might need a smaller mesh

      Good call. 👍 I have used lump coal in the past but didn't really notice much difference. I might try the pellet thing. I'm intrigued 🤔

      @@OptimisticGarage I didn't notice until someone pointed it out - the briquettes leave... Well, briquettes of ash 🤣
      The lump leaves a small pile of ash... Like that whole basket would probably leave you with less than a cup of ash.
      Flavor wise I honestly can't tell between briquettes and lump, but I can definitely tell when I've smoked with pellets - got a combo gas grill +smoker on sale for about 50% off a couple of years ago and I do love smoking 🤤
