    Why is it overflowing from the fill valve? How is that even possible?

    • @OptimisticGarage
      @OptimisticGarage Місяць тому

      Not really overflowing as much as just settling to level. Usually just drips which tells you it’s reached maximum capacity. If it doesn’t dribble out then you might be low on fluid.

    • @crabjoe
      @crabjoe Місяць тому

      It's possible because when you fill, you have to do it with the car running with the transmission in a specific temp range. When the trans is running, it's got fluid though out the transmission. When you shut it off, the fluid that's flowing in the transmission drops to the pan. Soooo.. when the car isn't running and you pull the trans fill plug, you'll get tranny fluid pouring out the fill plug.

    The hole on the muffler needs to be pointing down to allow moisture to drain. Also some of the burners when mounted on the side will allow diesel to drip out when it's shut off. David Mcluckie has a video on this.

    • @OptimisticGarage

      @ heat gun was all I had and actually most people don’t have that so just make sure you let car warm up to operating temperature meaning blue light on dash turns off on my 2016. After initial fill run vehicle through gears with brake on multiple times. Then go back and top off fluid. You should have slight dribble out of fill hole when done.

  • @leviwilbert9588

    I did the tranny fluid on my bmw just recently, basically the same process. I got my '20 Subaru Impreza just recently, and while it has a good maintenance history one thing that hasn't been done at 73k miles is the tranny fluid. Seeing this, it's good to see the process is basically the same. I do believe for the second fill, it needs to be up to temp and running. I know typically you're supposed to read the temp w/ an ODB reader. I do have one, unfortunately for my bimmer it wasn't enough to show the temp, so I went off of time (most people said it took around 15 mins or so to heat up), touch (around 95-120F is like a hot tub temp, maybe a little hotter), and I also used a laser temp gun as well. Between those three, I'm fairly confident I got the fill right it despite not being able to read the OBD scanner temp. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do ::shrug::. Saving money doing it yourself can help cut down costs of car maintenance. When you take a car in for every little repair, it's no wonder you end up paying a lot of money. Taking it in for a tranny flush for $200-300 may not seem much, but then you do that, you do some other maintenance items, and suddenly you get hit with something major (like an unexpected failure) and you have to take it into a shop, suddenly it feels a lot more expensive cuz you've already spent so much! However, it's not as bad when you can knock out a lot of the smaller projects yourself (even some of the bigger projects), then when you take it in, it may be a lot, but it's a rare time so its not as bad. For all the above reasons, and knowing a bit more about your car and the work done to it, I recommend people do more of than throwing money at garages.

    • @OptimisticGarage
      @OptimisticGarage 4 місяці тому

      Well said and thankyou for watching. I love saving money and learning along the way. Agree temp gun not perfect but we use what we have to get it done.

      @ikatsman if you check the recommended service for most cars, they say recommended transmission fluid change at 60K miles. I've been doing a lot of research lately on service I can do to cut costs and this is one that looks very doable for me. My car is at 95K miles and has never had the transmission fluid changed. At 60K, I took a MPG hit and started seeing mid 20 mpgs when it should be getting between 30 and 34 MPG highway. I've changed the PCV valve, I've had the heads cleaned, but none of that fixed my miles per gallon to where it should be on highway. I get higher mpg when driving local back roads than I do highway. So I have determined that I need to get all of this done. Thank you to the OP for this video it will definitely be helpful in changing my 2020 Crosstrek.

    You didn't do your homework before attempting this CVT procedure. It is wise to loosen the fill plug before draining the fluid from the pan, but the actual fluid drain should be from the pan plug only. That way it is not messy, and you can measure how much fluid comes out. The engine has to be running when you do the final fill procedure. The amount of fluid that poured out when you first removed the fill plug with the engine off is the amount of fluid that you are now short on. If you had measured the amount of fluid that drained out you would find that you put much less back in the way you did the final fill procedure. You had better get the engine up to the proper temperature and then add fluid with the engine running until it dribbles out or your CVT is going to have a very dim future...I hope others do not follow your procedure or there is going to be a lot of failing CVT's out there.

      First of all, temp gun is not the right way to take trans temp reading. There is a reason why they put a temp sensor in there so an OBD reader is the only way to do it. When the engine/tranny is running, some of the fluid gets picked up from the drain pan and distributed/re-circulated throughout the rest of the transmission so the fluid level in the pan will drop below fill hole level. This is the right time to add fluid to bring that level up back to fill hole level (of course with fluid expansion taken into consideration). When the engine stops, the fluid that has been re-circulated goes back down to the drain pan, hence, when you took off the fill plug in the beginning fluid came out. That is normal. The idea here is to maintain the fluid in the pan at or close to fill hole level WHILE it is ‘up to temp’ or hot AND being re-circulated while the engine is running. Putting fluid in not bringing it up to temp (cold) you run the risk of blowing up or overpressurizing your CVT when it gets hot later on. When that happens, fluid gets spewed out through the top vent and your tranny ends up being underfilled.

      A good friend of mine had his Subaru Legacy transmission fluid drained and filled at a shop that did it wrong. They serviced it like a differential, he was low about 2 quarts. The trans broke at 59,991 miles, Subaru dealer installed a reman transmission under warranty.

    Very nice but the meat turn out great. Did you had to burn the inside paint, sand, and wash it to make it clean for safety?

    • @OptimisticGarage
      @OptimisticGarage 10 місяців тому

      Yes fill it with wood and burn for a few hours. All the interior exterior paint will burn off. Then wire wheel everything. Once complete you have a bare metal barrel. Use a high temp paint to coat the outside and spray Pam or olive oil on inside to prevent rust. Once you start using it you will build up a nice char inside that protects metal

      If I remember correctly I didn’t change anything with the throttle. Simply removed the gear on the end of the pump so it wouldn’t spin. Also plug the outlet side of the pump so no dirt gets in there
