I watched this video in late 2018. I'm happy to say I'm starting OT school this coming Monday.
This will be me soon
Just wondering how it’s going for you so far??
@@kaynechapman5957 Just finished the Fall semester so its going good!

@@abrahamramirez3963 I start OTA school next month! How did spring semester go for you?
WOOOOOOOW ,you made this video just in time.I was first considering becoming a cardiologist then gyno then radiologist or going into diagnostic imaging.I always wanted to do something in the medical where I knew for certain i could help someone to the best of my ability but didnt know what to specialize. That was until I learnt of OT and PT then I became sure THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO DO.A video I saw years ago of a young boy learning to walk with a prosthetic leghad resurfaced and it touched my heart seeing him giving it all to learn to walk and I also kept thinking of the people who were there to help him overcome this issue.Thank God I found you and thank you for making these videos.
Hi Saodie! Thank you so much for your kind words!! I am so happy that you have found your calling! I can tell you are passionate about it and that certainly makes for a great therapist. Wishing you all the best!!
I’m in Georgia and all of the classes you’ve mentioned are available at my school! I graduated with my associates in early childhood development and currently working on my BS in psychology. Thank you for your references as I am still researching career fields
I'm so glad I found your channel. I've been interested in OT since high school, but went a different direction once in university. I'm starting school back in January to finish my prerequisites to hopefully get into OT school next year!
Woohoo!! You can totally do it!! I'm cheering you on! Xx
I am currently a third year at UC Davis getting my undergrad in Sociology. I just found out I wanted to become an occupational therapist after years of researching various professions. I was super motivated after watching this video!! I thought I would have to take a gap year to get all the pre-reqs in but it was so cool to hear that she did it all in seven months. Im so happy people are making videos about OT. I can't believe I found this field. So excited to help other people grow and prosper :)
Hi Alyssa!! Yay!! I love that you are so excited to become an OT! I have a feeling you will love it! Best of luck to you! Xx
Thank you so much, your videos are awesome, I was wondering if I can email you if I have any other questions?
Of course! :) hello@kidsothelp.com
Thank you so much for this bright, educational, and encouraging video! I’m getting all warm and fussy inside thinking about this being my career!! I feel like it is what I am meant to do. Having personal family members who have gone to OTs for assistance to get back on their feet brings it right home too.🤗🤗 THANK YOU FOR SHARING
💜
Thank you sooo much for sharing all this wonderful information with all of us!! I am about to start my journey in this career .I have three kids and currentky traveling due to husband ‘s job and one of my kids is in the autism spectrum. He had an amazing OT and I leraned so much from her and I had no idea I will end up choosing this path. my background is in Marine Science ( marine biology). Thank you for tge encouragement words!....love your squirrel moment! 💜
I’m doing a health promotion major as a first year and I’ve been super uneasy about pre med. I felt like it was right for me but after reading more about occupational therapy I really feel like this is the thing I should look more into!!!!
Thanks so much for this video! I'm in San Diego and looking at DH for the OT program. My Bachelors is in Hospitality Management and all of my science and psych classes were taken right out of high school so I've probably forgotten everything and will be taking on all of the prereqs. I'm strategizing to be able to apply Spring 2021. I was so excited to see that you went to Cal State, too, so this video was super relevant for me. :) Thanks again!
I’m glad I found your channel. I’m currently thinking about becoming an OTA specifically in pediatrics because I’ve been working with kids for about 4yrs now and I feel passionate about helping kids and watching them grow! Thank you for this video!
I love this!! I'm sure you will make a fantastic OTA! We can certainly use more :) Good luck to you!
Thank you!
You are so well spoken! Congrats to you thank you for this.
Hi!! I'm also becoming an OT and I feel really proud. Thanks for giving this information.
Woohoo! Love connecting with fellow OTs :) I hope you're loving it so far!
First off ...you’re so beautiful 🙌🏼💕 and second thank you so much for this video !!!!
I’m kinda of a shy person and I’m working on it but I’m planing on doing this career for university. Would my shyness come on the way of my career?
One of my really good friends is SO very shy, and is also an OT. In fact, if you watch the video "Therapeutic Outdoor Play| Timbernook" she is in the video with me. It seems as though when you are doing something you love and are passionate about, it is easier to overcome that shy-ness and you naturally start to blossom. I definitely wouldn't worry too much about it. There are so many different types of OTs, I'm sure you would make a fantastic one. :)
Im the same way, and also considering to be an OT
@@nekoleamber Hey im asian lol. Btw can i get a 2nd degree of OT after i will graduate my IT Course?
Thank you for your advice and thoughts! I found this video helpful. Also, I just wanted to say that you are so beautiful! Love your smile and your make up is done super well.
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and giving a general explanation of what to expect with regard to the requirements as well as the benefits and rewards of this career. Your demeanor is so very pleasant, genuine and just exhibits such a positive energy. Wishing you continued health, wealth and success in all that you do!
I’ve been studying for my major in childhood education but I feel like I’d be better as an OT, but never really knew that was a job until starting my Education classes. Thanks for the video!
So helpful! Thank you sis, especially the travel OT made my heart skip a beat. What a life :)
Hannah Rose I know it sounds so fun!
Finally, a brown OT! Subscribed...thanks for what you do
This video was super helpful. Thank you so much for providing some honest insight!!
Thank you so much for posting this. I am in a place in my life where I am at a cross roads with my career, and its so stressful. I have a Bachelors in Health Science, and am a School teacher. I have been looking into Sonography as well, and then recently stumbled across Occupational Therapy - so I thought I would do more research on if I think its a career choice that fits me. I stumbled across this, and you have answered so many questions for me, and also given me a really good insight into how to get into it. I am from Australia, so obviously there will be some differences. But you have sparked a passion in me for this. Thank you for sharing, God Bless xx
TieshaTiana I’m studying OT in Australia! We’re super lucky here because it’s so much easier to get into OT - no pre-requisites, not nearly as competitive, can become registered with the 4yr undergraduate degree etc. And amazing projected job growth for us in Aus too ^_^
Oh, and no letters of recommendation either!!
I did 2 years of Science before switching to OT and it’s been the best choice ever.
Thanks for the video! I'm actually prepping to go to a community college for the OTA course now, but may decide on full OT when in. Haven't decided yet. But your videos was very helpful either way.
OMG.. .My mouth dropped when you were talking about how you came into learning about becoming an OTA, because I'm going though same right now. I swear Im living your same moments lol, deja vu and lightheadedness, , so weird! the only difference is I heard about from the admissions advisor when I was checking out the Sonography/Radiation Tech. SUPER WEIRD!! Overall video was awesome thanks!!!
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel! I am an aspiring OT student. Thank you for this video :)
Thank you so much!! :) Happy to share!
Thank you so much for this video, I was sad because I didn’t know if I wanted to be an OT or a pt or a teacher after graduation this December 2019. I am getting a bachelors in pre-pt here at Dominguez hills, I been so indecisive because theres many options to chose from but thanks to you I got clarity and I would work super hard to get my acceptance letter from the OT program at my second home DH 💕
Ahhh! That is sooo exciting!! You’ve got this! So happy that you feel clear about your path. I’m sure you’ll make a wonderful OT. Best of luck! 💜
How's it going? (;
I love your hair it looks so fluffy! ❤ thanks for the video it was very helpful 😊
Love your video. I m studying allied health assistance now and will continue bachelor of occupational therapy. Greetings from Down under land
An ot student but soon graduating
Your video is inspiring
Hi! Thank you so much for this video.
I have been recently considering studying to become an OT. I also have a degree in Communications (Advertising, 2012) and have been working in a mix of hospitality/management and sales since then. I want to help people and do something that is rewarding. Find my "Ikigai!" So your video really inspired me :) I was actually looking into becoming a PT, and my good friend who is a social worker recommended I look into OT and I'm sucked in.
I will have to take the prerequisites at my local community college but the OT coursework looks both far more interesting and far more "up my alley" than PT which I can imagine will translate to a better fit professionally, too. I'm in FL so will ideally be looking for a program around here, as my fiance works here full time. I think the prereqs are pretty similar to what you mentioned.
How did you go about connecting with an OT for your volunteer hours? Other than beginning the prereqs at community college and studying for the GRE - the obvious steps - I'm a little stuck on where to start!
I really identify with your story - I also have a degree in comms and have been working in advertising! Thinking about OT as an option for a career change that feels fulfilling and the right fit for me. Did you get an answer to the OT volunteer hour question? Where are you in the journey?
Julie Lewis hey Julie! I’m pleased to say I have begun my journey :) I am currently taking prerequisites at my local community college and should have them fulfilled, in addition to GRE done and observation hours, in time to apply in January for a program next fall. I would not be able to get everything ready so quickly if I were working FT, but I’ve dropped down to about 20 hours a week (nights, at a restaurant) to accomplish all of this.
Most traditional advice I found for finding observation hours suggests cold-calling or dropping in to local institutions with OTs and just asking- schools, hospitals, rehabs etc. However, I used the AOTA website and found a Facebook group for my local chapter. This was an incredible resource! I posted on the group and there were several OTs happy to help. I’m currently completing some hours in two diverse settings- one with early childhood and the other general population.
Good luck and let me know how it goes!
How do you go about in getting your 80 volunteer hours? Thanks so much in advanced! I will be graduating with my BS in the spring and plan on applying to Dominguez Hills for OT! Also what kind of study tools did you use for the GRE?
I’m very glad I found this video. I am a senior in high school and after watching this video, I am strongly considering becoming an OT. Thank you very much.
That is awesome!! It is a wonderful field with so much to explore! :)
Yay you went to CSUDH so did I Go Toros! I just got my BA in Psychology from CSUDH. Now I’m taking my prerequisites so I can apply for MSOT at CSUDH, WCU, and USC. Keeping my fingers crossed and praying I get in. Thanks more videos please. Any tips on shadowing an OT? Letters of Recommendation, GRE scores, how to study for GRE, recommended GPA? After my dad had a stroke I took him to the Carson center and the CSUDH OT students would help him. I took Intro to OT with Professor Paul he’s awesome too! That’s how I fell in love with OT. Thanks!!!
Hey Elizabeth! So cool connecting with a fellow Toro! Paul is the man!! :) What a fascinating story you have. As far as tips go: if you have an idea of places you might be interested in working or checking out, give the facility a call and see if they allow prospective students to volunteer/shadow. That is what I did. I called my local hospital and it was relatively easy to set up. If you are in the LA area, this should be even easier as (im sure you know) the two main OT schools are located in LA and you're certainly not the first person to inquire about volunteering. Letters of recommendation and GPA recommendations i mention in the video but 3.0 is a the minimum GPA to be considered. I didn't do so hot on the GRE so I can't speak to that haha. But with that being said, it's about the entire picture, not just any one area. So if you shine in other areas to make up for a not so great one, they certainly will take that into consideration. Best of luck to you!!
I found this video super helpful! I am currently a undergrad biology student and am looking at my diiferent options now that I have decided not to go to med school. I have recently descoved OT and am very intrested!
So helpful! I am so excited 🎉😅
You are very beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your story and all of the advice!
Thank you for this video! The information was extremely helpful 😊
Watching from Australia. Love your channel!
Thank you so much, Nadege!! Xx
Thank you so much for the video I am even more excited about continuing my journey to become an Occupational Therapist.
Thank you for the idea, Jamay! I'm excited for you too!
Woooww!!! That’s so cool!!! Here in Europe it’s much different! It’s much easier no get excepted !
Wonderful video thank you :) very informative! Also... I low key wanted to see the baby squirrels :] !
Dahaha! This made my day!! 🤣 Thank you!
Hi! I loved this video!
I would like to know how long did it take you to complete your pre required courses and I would love if in the future you can make a video about studying techniques and tips for those taking the GRE.
Thank you!
I was so deep into this then i hear baby squirrel lol i was on the floor dying. 😂😂😂😂Nonetheless, thank you so much for these tips. Its everything i needed in 1 video.
Hahaha! Just keeping it real! ;) You are so welcome! Happy to help! :)
My mom had a stroke 1 month ago, I’m 17 years old and already experienced everything ot, pt and st work on, so I’m very interested in doing that and I’m currently applying to colleges
I'm currently a second year OTA student in my second rotation of fieldwork! I'm assuming by this video that you went straight into OT, correct? I've been going back and forth with deciding if I want to get my masters to become an OTR. I know I have some time to think about that because when I graudate in May, I still have to return to complete my bachelors. Do you think you could do a video on your view of a COTA and OTR, how their days differ, what you think would make someone want to continue on to become an OTR, and maybe even pay differences? I'm new to your channel and just subscribed! :)
Omg I’m so happy I came across your video! So I’m getting my associates in psychology this year. I will be transferring to CSULB or CSUF on the Spring. I really want to be an OT, that’s my dream. I’m not sure what to do once I transfer though :( any tips?
Hi Blanca! I'm sure you will make a fantastic OT. Looks like you will have a nice head start with an associates in psychology in terms of the required pre-reqs! Thats is awesome. Definitely make an appointment with a college counselor. They should be able to offer you literature on the OT schools you are interested in and the requirements, etc. That should help you narrow your choices. I would also suggest looking into shadowing OTs in your area when you have some time. You can call local hospitals, pediatric outpatient clinics, hand clinics, etc. This will give you a nice idea of what to expect. Hope that helps!! Best of luck to you. :)
Hi there!! I absolutely loved your video and it makes me even more excited about exploring the career of occupational therapy! I have just recently considered this idea so I’m trying to do as much research as possible before deciding. I have one question- I have already received my BA in Business administration and I remember you mentioning that you received your bachelors in communication. Did it only take you 6 months to complete the prerequisites in order to be accepted into the OT masters program? Im trying to figure out how much schooling I will need to complete the process. Thanks so much for your time and help! 🤗
I got my degree in Recreational therapy but I want to look into occupational therapy. Thank you for your video!
Hi are you still a recreational therapist? :)
What an amazing job!😍😍😍😍
I notice you said you completed your prerequisites in 6-7 months, which is generally the length of one semester. Here in Texas, Human Anatomy and Physiology are combined and you must take Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 (plus lab for a total of 4 credits )as a prerequisite for Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 (plus lab for a total of 4 credits). Did you take all of those courses you mentioned in one semester? If so, girl props to you. You are my new source of inspiration. I'm so happy I found your channel.
Ch MS haha I don’t know that I’m that cool! They were also combined (anatomy and physiology) but we only had to take one set of A&P where it sounds like you are taking two?? Wow! Also, those classes were full in my closest community colleges so I had to pony up and sign up for University of Phoenix (online course). That was a much easier course to power through and it was only about 12 weeks. Expensive, but it was my only option to meet the application deadline. Best of luck! You’ve got this!! ❤️💜
@@nekoleamber Thank you for your insight. I am going to look into taking as many classes as I can online instead of face to face. Was the course you took at University of Phoenix a lecture/lab or just a 3 hr credit lecture?
I absolutely love your videos! I’m super interested in pursuing a career as an OT. I have heard that many schools are transitions into OTD. Would you recommend future students to apply directly to schools with OTD programs?
Hi there! Thank you so much!! I would actually say if you can get in before the requirements change, go with a Masters. You can always go back if you really want a doctorate, but as of now there isn't a financial incentive to do an OTD program, and they are pretty expensive!
You give me so much hope
Omg hi!! I’m an EXSS major and I suddenly switched for shooting for a physician assistant to OT for my career path. I just feel that I belong in the OT field and I’m so thankful I came across your channel! I’m currently a senior and was wondering if I should try to work as an OTA before going to/applying to OT school? If you have any advice, I’d highly appreciate it 😭❤️ im first American generation, so I’ve done everything by myself and it’s been rough not having a guide.
Congrats! I’m hoping to apply to OT school next year. How did you get the anatomy and physiology requirements done so fast? I’ve checked with the local community colleges and a lot have prerequisites for the classes or there won’t be spots available since other students have earlier enrollment dates.
Abraham Ramirez I had the same issue! It’s a constant problem it seems. I ended up signing up for University of Phoenix (online course) to get it done. Unfortunately, that was my only option to meet the application deadline. It’s expensive, but it was very convenient.
Nekole, I love your videos! Your honesty and passion for the profession and helping others is inspiring! 💗
I have a question: Does anyone have any information on international contracts? I am interested in working in Italy as an occupational therapist, but I haven't been able to find any information about this online.
So helpful, thank you!
If I already have a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation services but I want to become an OT my gpa was not that high like a 2.75 cumulative . I been doing the research and I know I want to become an OT
Thanks for the video!
LOVE LOVE !!!
Thank you so much, just applied for the course and I have been so confused because I really didn’t know what it entails, my supervisor where I did my carer course advised me to go for it but I wasn’t still convinced that it would enable me to get a job because it is too female dominating
+Marius Odiachi congrats!! That is a huge step! Being a male in the field would actually give you a pretty big advantage! Most places want to diversify their staff as much as possible. You’ve got this! 💪🏾
Great video! I find that I am in a similar position to you in terms of undergrad. I majored in International Relations and Spanish, but I am now interested in OT. How did you go about fulfilling the prerequisite courses being that you did not take those classes in college? Also, how long did it take? Thanks!
Oh my God, I really needed this and I'm so glad I discovered your channel! I have a similar background story, super bored and just not fulfilled with my office job. I'm bouncing back and forth between applying to OT school or Speech Path. school. Ahhhhh so much to think about. I have a BS in Healthcare Admin so luckily some of the pre-reqs are completed but I graduated in 2014 so I'm hoping they are still accepted given that it's been some time since I've taken them.
Hey Jenelle! Good for you for making a change! I obviously love OT, but I also know many SLPs who are happy with their decision too haha. When looking at OT, PT, and SLP I was drawn to the fact that OTs look at the entire person, not just any one aspect of a person. I believe you should believe you should be ok with your pre-requisites. At least at CSUDH you could count classes that were less than 7 years old. :)
This was such an informational video ! Thanks
Thank you!! :)
Girl, you're soo pretty
Thank you so much for the informative video filled with positive energy. I have 1 question - I'm interested in helping people mentally and it's coming down to either pursuing education in Mental Health & Addictions or OT. OT seems like it has more opportunity however Mental Health is directly my niche. is there enough of an avenue to do OT and help people on a psychological level or should I follow my passion?
Im on the same boat as you. I hope she answers back lol 👀
@@ToneupwithTiffany hey i feel you! I ended up taking social work for now in order to solidify an entry position in the field in the future and if I want to do masters to go into mental health on a counselling or therapist level then the option is there! Felt like two birds with one stone. Hope you figure out your route soon, it feels really good going with passion over employment opportunity so far :)
You’re awesome 👏 thank u❣️
I love this video!!!
Very informative video. Thank you.
What would you have to get a Bachelor degree in? You said that you completed your first degree in Communications and that didn't qualify for becoming an OT student so you had to start from scratch so what did you have to do then?
What I meant to say is that I hadn't completed any of the required pre-requisite courses (with the exception of statistics) because my undergraduate major was unrelated. If you are a psychology major or choose a major related to health, chances are you will have taken at least some of the required pre-requisite courses giving you a bit of a head start. :) It doesn't matter what undergraduate degree you have, so long as it is from an accredited college.
I would suggest biology bc most prerequisites are A&P and several psychology classes and those classes are apart of that curriculum
Hi! I was wondering when you started from scratch what you majored in? Did you do four years and then go to another school for OT? How many years total did it take you to become an OT?
Its funny because I'm currently in school and majoring in Ultrasound but I'm really considering Occupational therapy!
Congratulations to you, that is awesome! It's actually funny you mention that because I actually used to work in sales too and found it monotonous, unfulfilling, and strenuous. Likewise, I also wanted to study diagnostic medical sonography but decided against it when I found an OTA program at a junior college. I will be applying next semester and my chances look good, however, my question to you is whether you know of any COTAs that became OTRs eventually? I want to finish my undergrad first but for me it is beneficial to become a COTA to save up for my bachelor's degree and pay off some loans and get experience for a few years. Would you say this is a sound plan? Also, what types of GPAs have you seen be accepted into OT programs?
Jace Ontiveros Hi, I am not an occupational therapist, but have been looking at programs. There are a few OTA to OT programs, I would recommend just looking at the University’s that interest you and contact them. GPA requirements are usually 3.0, but I’d say strive to get a little higher, hope I helped some and good luck!
Jace Ontiveros hi there! That sounds like a solid plan and plenty of COTAs go on to be OTRs. And yes, there are programs that will bridge you from COTA to OTR. GPA is typically a minimum of 3.0 and it gets more competitive as time passes. My best advice is to go at your pace and do what feels right for you. Becoming a COTA will give you lots of experience and prepare you for OTR when you decide its time. 😊
As far as observation hours, will schools be expecting them from different fields of OT? and also did you exceed the minimum 80 hrs? Btw this video is so helpful, i am currently in my last semester of undergrad and about to get ready for the application process. CSUDH is one of my top choices living in southern california :)
I'm glad I live in Greece and I don't have to do all of that to get into school! We do way worse things 😂
Thank you for this video as it is very informative. I am very interested in becoming an OT student but am visually impaired. My question is, how accessable will OT program be to me?
Awesome video! I just had one question. How did you fulfill all the requirements in 6 months?
I was able to take most of them in one semester at a local city college, and took another class through University of Phoenix (online).
Hey there!!
i’m graduating with my BSN in health science and minor in psychology next may. Would I be considered “moving backwards” if I applied
for OTA school instead of OT? I kinda want more experience first if that makes sense lol
Key L I have the same question! lol
I asked this question earlier and the answer I got was no, but yes? Im graduating with a degree in psychology, but im taking the prerequisite classes for my SJSU program. If I was you, I would find an OT program, and look around for opportunities to shadow. If you really want to go the OTA to OT route, find a bridge program. Otherwise, you have a bachelors, and it would be costly to do a complete OTA program and then a whole different OT program if it wasn't bridged. (meaning your units would not count and you would be paying two different bills)
0hSnapShesHonest Im not sure what a bridge program is but now i will definitely look into it! Thank you so much for the reply!
I'm a stay at home mom and just have some college done. Do you think this would be a good fit for someone like me!? The college I was enrolled in forever ago (almost 10 years ago) has a pre-OT program. Do you recommend doing a pre-OT program or do you recommend getting your bachelors in something else and then jump to OT? Thank you! PS, you are sooo well spoken and such a pleasure to watch! Thank you for your videos!
Mommyfaceted thank you so much for your kind words! 💜 You can totally do this! That is so cool that they have a pre-OT program! I would totally do that if I had access to one. You’ll know what to expect and be ready to go when the time comes. That might also help you stand out in your OT student application or maybe even fast-track you. You’ve got this mama! 💪🏾💜
Hello! First off, I want to thank you for the super important information you shared. I wanted to ask if there is a way I can directly contact you with a few questions?
Hi! I’m in a similar boat. Earned a BS in Biology years back and am unhappy with my sales job. I have a few of the prerequisite courses completed from my college days, but need to take a couple more and get my volunteer hours. My question is about the GPA required. I spent my first 2 years of college in a major I hated, and it wreaked havoc on my overall GPA. Will this be a big factor? After I changed to biology I maintained a 3.26 overall.
I enjoyed this video. It was very informative
I didn't know they call you about jobs!
Thank you so much for this video! Dominguez Hills is one of the schools I will be applying to, but I am wondering how you completed your medical terminology course. My University doesn't offer that course. Is there any suggestion on where I can complete it?
I'm so curious about this career but so confused about schooling! Every masters program I look at requires a bachelors in a related field plus many medical course prerequisites yet the school's don't offer the related bachelors degree? I have to start over because I don't think my Bachelor's in English Literature will cut it haha.
super helpful thank you
So glad to hear it! Thanks, Chris!!
THANK YOU
Hi loved ur video.U gave great information.I am considering to becoming an O.T.About how long u have to go schooling to becoming an O.T.Do the course have evening n weekend classes?Thks for the info
Thank you very much for explaining this field.
This might be an interesting question but I was curious if you thought this career was achievable for someone with a visual impairment (20/200).
I am able to see well within 3 feet of someone, use technology on a computer (simple zoom or audio for large amounts of text) and have great communication skills.
I do not yet know enough about how my visual impairment would affect me in this field but I am highly interested as I know exactly what it’s like to think differently and adjust to what life throws at you.
Thank you very much!
I love that you asked! It would be pretty hypocritical for this career to NOT be achievable for you! So YES I definitely think there are settings that could potentially suit you very well and adaptations that can be made. There are so many different sub-settings, and you may have to do some research to find ones that you would be interested in or feel is a good fit. I know there is driver rehabilitation settings for patients who suffer stroke, etc. A hand rehab setting would be another area to look into. You would be such an asset to your clients and co-workers as you have learned how to adapt your activities of daily living on a regular basis. Go for it! :)
Hi! I’m a soon to be college senior and I have been very interested in pursuing a career as an OT since high school. In fact, I want to apply to OT school right after I graduate, however, I am doubtful of my prerequisite grades/GPA since I barely make a little above the minimum GPA in terms of my prerequisites, but my overall GPA is rather high. Would you mind sharing any advice on this particular subject? Such as if I should wait on applying and retake classes to boost my prereq GPA or leave it as is and just take a shot at applying since they consider everything rather than just prerequisites. Thank you!
Hi Jocelyne! Congrats on almost being done with college! I say you should go for it!! Generally, colleges tend to look at all aspects that make up the applicant, instead of overly focusing on any one area. If you have an overall high GPA and get stellar letters of recommendations in combination with high GRE scores, you look pretty good on paper. Some colleges will even interview you. So there are plenty of opportunities to show that you are a qualified OTS candidate. :) Good luck to you!!
Awesome video
Hey Nekole, I love your content, especially around OT! I recently graduated my Masters in Occupational Therapy in England, U.K. I am keen to work in Los Angeles, but not sure how to go about getting the visa, or how the process would work in general. I have looked into recruitment agencies who walk you through the process such as MEDPRO and Conexus, but they seem to only recruit nurses. I need a recruiter who can help with sourcing the OT job in my area of specialism, apartment, car rental, visa/ permits/ any pre exams I would need to take for AOTA.. etc.. Do you have any advice please? Or know of anyone who has relocated (even for 12 months) from the U.K. to the states to work?
Love this video. I am glad to know and watch this video. It is just in time for me, because right now I have to determine whether I will pursue Nursing or OT for my future career, and I got motivated from you. I have questions for you. I could not get it when you said you were doing 2 rotations, work (40hours a week within 12 weeks) and do your homework. Can you tell me more about this? Did you mean you got a permanent job while studying for OT? Next, when is it a good time for 80-hours volunteer? Finally, can you tell me more about analytical writing? Is it the same a critical thinking course since I took it last semester? Therefore, Quantitative reasoning and verbal belong to GRE exam, don't they? I am sorry because I wrote a lot. I appreciate for your time. Thank you and you have a great day.
Hieu Do most people do their shadowing hours in the summer of undergrad because generally people aren’t in school and you can shadow / volunteer for longer periods of time. And yes during the last two semesters you will have two 12 week clinical rotations of 40 hours a week. Normally schools will have an online class on top of this and most people have to work a normal job because the clinical rotation isn’t paid.
Hi I just found your videos on OT! I very recently became interested in OT after a bit more than a year off of my undergrad at CSULB, and am now seriously considering CSUDH! I'm still iffy on whether or not some pre-reqs count with some of what I took, but thank you for this video! What tips do you have with volunteering? Once I do get in the program, any tips on how to make the most out of the CSUDH resources?
Hey Johnathan!! That is so exciting! I really enjoyed the program and I made some lifelong friends as well - so in my opinion, money well spent! ;) As far as volunteering goes, if you have time to check out a few settings I would recommend that! It will give you the best idea of what to expect as an OT and where you may potentially be interested in working. There are SOO many options in your area, and most have worked with plenty of future OT students. I would recommend looking at a hospital near by, a pediatric clinic, hand clinic, etc. I was short on time so only volunteered in a hospital but there are so many aspects to explore in the hospital (acute, nicu, inpatient rehab, etc). As far as resources go, you'll want to join your cohort's facebook group. Great resource for everyone posting literature, tips, etc. Once you are in the program and you have your tour, you will get linked up with a "buddy" from the prior cohort. They will be an amazing resource for you. You can email them about which books you reeeaaally need and which ones you might be able to get by without haha and whatever else you may need. All the important stuff. In fact, your buddy may even sell some of their books to you at a discounted rate. I'm sure I am missing some stuff, but if you ever need anything feel free to shoot me an email hello@kidsOThelp.com. :)
@@nekoleamber Thank you so much! I'll definitely drop an email if I have more questions, but I'll probably focus on the volunteering since it's probably too late for this years applications. I'll be subscribed, so looking forward to your content!
Hi , i think im planning on becoming an OT someday. How long and how was the process overall to go into communications to OT at a different school? Was it hard in terms of the process and classes? Was chemistry also required?
I am from India , am joining occupational therapy wish me luck
This helped out so much I’m going into my senior year of high school and due to personal experiences within my family, I’ve decided I want to pursue a career in OT but in my college search it’s not a lot of schools that offer ot related majors courses etc. so my question is what do you think would be good to major in if you want to become a occupational therapist? I was thinking about majoring in Psychology but I don’t know.
Hi Sydney! Good for you for knowing what you're passionate about doing so early on! That is a great question. A lot of the courses in other majors simply won't transfer. Psychology can be a great option! Do you have any idea what population you'd like to work with as an OT? If mental health is a consideration, than psychology seems like a no-brainer. If not, other science degrees like kinesiology or something similar would really help you excel when getting into the anatomy and physiology aspects of the program. Hope that helps! :)
This actually helped a lot thank you so much. I haven’t really thought about the different fields deeply but now I will to help me decide 😊 I appreciate your advice because I wasn’t sure since ot isn’t very known. So it’s kinda hard to find a lot of info on it.
Great video about OT.
I post lots of videos on OT related topics on my channel My OT & Me.
Always trying to raise awareness of our profession.
Great! Thank you. How long was the program?
Hi there! I’m a little confused about the route I should take with what I have already regarding my degrees. I have a BA in Spanish and now I’m interested in furthering a career in OT. Would I have to do over my bachelors degree? Or are there courses I can take that are equivalent to a degree? Not sure what to do.
I’m 30 and I finally figured out what I want to do and it’s occupational Therepy, not OTA. Is it too late for me?
Is it possible to get into an OT grad program with a BBA (Bachelor's in Business Administration) in Management?
I’m late but Yes
