On the flip side of mindfulness trying to wipe out the Buddhist roots; it's helping drive a lot of people to Buddhism. (and other religions. All though, I don't really consider the Thai Forest tradition a religion. Some other Theravada traditions sure, same with some traditions in other schools of Buddhism. But Thai forest is pretty much, sit or lay down and practice and you will start to see what we are talking about for yourself. You will probably learn things that we don't talk about with lay people because knowing them makes lay life hard or impossible. But, we will tell you these things if you ask. (or read the Suttas). Mindfulness flat out drove me to Buddhism personally. It only took about a year or mindfulness practice to realize a lot of how the world and the mind works... And that indeed, compassion and renunciation of the world are the best thing. (while part of me still does question the renunciation part..)
I hope that the people in Sri Lanka who are blindly following self-proclaimed popular monks, some of whom falsely claim to be arahants, despite having no experience in practicing the noble eightfold path, can read this message. It is concerning that some monks are now using Buddhism as a means to fulfill their personal needs, putting the religion itself in jeopardy.
