I used to love doing local industry jobs in Chicago. We had two N&W cabooses we would use to shove trains back in to the yard because it actually took less time to shove them back than to tie up both mains to run around the train and pull back in to the yard. They still had the pot belly stove, bunks and water tanks. They smelled horrible, but dang were they fun to ride in.

Thats more common than you think, the flasher gets bumped to a different flash pattern and goes from wig/wag to flash. The ditch lights, go to wig/wag flash when the horn relay is activated. In normal they are steady burn. Not all class 1's flash their ditch lights. It's a option when ordering the unit.

FYI, WWOT, locomotives have no hydraulics. Flashing ditchlight sequences are being applied on new loco's and older ones are to be retrofitted all in an effort to make trains more visible to the public. They are activated whenever the bell and or whistle is utilized.

0:59 It is 12 December 2021 and we are at the CSX Middle Road crossing on the east side of Dunkirk, New York as the gates are going down. At 1:15 the CSX dispatcher is talking to Amtrak train #48, the Lake Shore Limited, as it is approaching the Middle Road crossing. At 1:20 the headligh of Amtrak train #48 peeks around the curve from the elevated tracks through Dunkirk, New York. The Lake Shore LImited blows past the Middle Road crossing at track speed for passenger trains with its usual consist of 11 cars. This train is known to CSX as train #P048 (P for Passenger train 048 for its Amtrak number.).
2:05 It is 10 November 2021and we are at the Berry Road crossing in Ponfret, New York. We are waiting for CSX train #I158 to appear. You zoom in on train #I158 when it is about two miles away. At about 3:00 train #I158 passes the Mile Post 47 signals. At 3:36 the engineer blows the horn to warn of the train's approach to the Martin/Willow Road crossing and we see the ditch lights flasshing. At 4:18 the engineer blows the for the approach to the Lake Road corssing. At 5:00 the horn blows for the approach to the Berry Road crossing. A very long train #I158 finishes crossing Berry Road at 7:56. You wainted for the gates to go up and for a pickup truck pulling a flat bed trailer to pass before you zoomed in on the train as it continued east. At 7:57 train #I158 passed the Mile Post 44.8 signals and at 8:27 the lights on the Mile Post 44.8 signals go dark. At 8:30 there appears to be a headlight shinning at us on track #1. At 10:54 the gates at the Van Buren Road crossing go up and that headlight on track #1 is gatting closer. The reason train #I158 is slowing down appears to be because it is on track #2 and the trian approaching us on track #1 is prpbably using the crossover at Control Point 42 to cross from track #2 to track #1and has not completely cleared the crossover to allow train #I158 to proceed on track #2. At 10:46 we see your shadow moving as you prepare to step in front of the camcorder to talk to us. You tell us that a train had gone past earlier and that there were flames coming out of the engine compartmetn on one of the engines. You said something about that train had to stop about 15 milesl est of Berry Road to await the arrival of emergency equipment to put out the fire and that some trains were being held from passing the disabled train. There was no further discussion about the train that was on fire because the next video was taken over a month and a half later.
10:57 It is 23 December 2021, we are at the Temple Road corssing on the west side of Dunkirk, New York as CSX train #I158, which is a daily train, is approaching. The gates are going down at Temple Road. After the train passes Temple Road, we watch the train as it continues toward the Mile Post 41 curve.
15:20 We are at West Third Street and Robin Street at the west end of the elevated tracks through Dunkirk, New York. You have not been at this location in months. It is 11 December 2021 and we are watching for today's version of CSX train #I158 to appear. The headlights and ditch lights are visible just beyond the traffic control sign. At 15:42 you point out how the trees in the background are swaying in the wind. You said that there is a high wind warning in effect with 70 Mile Per Hour winds possible. All the CSX trains papssing through the Dunkirk area to and from Buffalo are under a 30 Mile Per Hour slow order for the duration of the high wind warning. Double stack trains and auto racks are extremely vulnerable to having cars blown over by high winds. at 16:36 you pan east on West Third Street to show us a 'Dunkirk Policeman talking to some people in the middle of Third Street as another Dunkirk Police vehicle is approaching the group. At 16:51 you pan back to train #I158 as it continues on its wasy east. AT 18:51 you focus on your driver's side mirror on the Dunkirk Police and the people in the street. At 19:08 CSX train #I158 has past our location.
20:12 We are at the Berry Road crossing in Pomfret, New York with the CSX gates down. At 20:20 CSX train #C750, the Dunkirk Local, approaches and passes Berry Road on its way to the CSX Yard in Erie, Pennsylvania. This action took place on 30 December 2021. We watch train #C750 as it crosses the Lake Road crossing. We see the I-90, New York State Thruway, bridge in the background.
21:09 We are at the Berry Road crossing in Pomfret, New York on 18 December 2021 as the Norfolk Southern gates start to go down for NOrfolk Southern train #309. At 21:39 train #309 starts to cross Berry Road with two Union Pacific engines powering the train. At 22:05 Nofolk Southern train #309 reports to the dispatcher that he cleared the Norfolk Southern Mile Post 47 signals westbound. At 25:02 the Norfolk Southern defect detector at Norfolk Southern Mile Post 16.3 reports that there are no defects on train #309. It has been raining all day. Tht is why your windshield wipers were going while you were filming. At 25:25 the Norfolk Southern defect detector repeats its message about train #309.
25:52 WE are at the CSX Middle Road crossing on the east side of Dunkirk, New York on 23 December 2021 as CSX train #I010 comes around the curve in the dark in the snow. We see that there is a green light on the Control Point 37 signal bridge for track #2. At 27:00 a mid-train DPU appears.
29:17 Your Outro begins and terminates at 31:07.
Thank you for documenting these trains on these days in November and December 2021 and for uploading them for us to view!

I used to live at Tenth St. And Skull Alley right next to the tracks. We used to have a train go thru and the guy would lay on the horn from the entrance of lebanon to the exit. Suprised he didnt get hit with noise ordinance

I never realized the vulnerability of double stacks in high winds. That must really mess up the schedules!

I don’t know of any hydraulic system on EMD or GE engines, so it was probably diesel or lub oil leaking on the hot engine.

That Amtrak was really moving! ….Snowy windy night, not good for hanging around for any length of time.

Do you mean the crossing gates? Sure. With two parallel lines, the arm facing the occupied line stays up, allowing vehicles to clear the unoccupied line, in case its status should suddenly change. Mostly for oversize vehicles that wont fit between.

What's the point of having those lights on at all? No train crossed on those tracks while the lights were on, and if the lights for both tracks always come on simultaneously, why not just make it one big crossing with one set of lights & gates in each direction?
