Ask Ian Cummings why did they build madden 06 for the 360 from the ground up when they already had an amazing foundation from the PS2 era!? I feel like madden is still recovering from that decision ( I also believe that’s what killed off NBA LIve as 2k just kept building off their existing engine and live was struggling to get a full game going till they were to far behind)

The moment they tried to put players on to the field they ran into. They tried to carry over the stuff from the 7th gen but they found out they were unable to. That trailer shown at e3 was a proof of concept for the developer to be motivated. So when it was shown the developers got very pissed because they realistically can’t be close to the trailer. The worked day and night sleep at the studio to finish the game. When the game dropped we know what happened. It probably scared the the shit out of ea the publisher do to the reception of the game. Madden for future gen had smoother development. That was the hardest they worked on madden, had to be some heartbreaking stuff.

If that kicking animation has been in there for 20 years, imagine what else is leftover from that period of time? I'd guess a lot of spaghetti and legacy code within the engine.
Some possible questions for Ian Cummings: 1. Since the time you stopped working with EA, what are some ways you feel the game has improved, and how can EA expand upon those to make the game better? 2. On the flipside, what are things that have come into play in Madden that you feel take away from what the game could truly be? 3. Is there any game you can point to and say, "this is where things went wrong?" 4. Since the mass #NFLDropEA tweets a few years ago that prompted a "we hear you" response from the Madden team, do you feel the game has legitimately gotten better? Is there any recent game you feel serves as a legitimate foundation for future improvements? 5. Despite some bugs and needed updates, CFB 25's launch has been mostly successful. Do you feel the reception towards the game could shift how future Madden titles are made, not just in terms of features that go into the game, but the release model for the game itself (i.e. staggered releases to allow for more dedicated development time, with smaller updates in between games)?
I've been a FIFA/EAFC player my whole life, and it's always fascinating to me that you can map every complaint I've ever heard about Madden directly onto that series too.
I played the beta and have hundreds of hours in madden 24, the game definitely plays differently. Of course its not completely sim, but theres actually defense in this game compared to cfb25
Last Madden game i liked was Madden 08 on the PC. I skipped the PS3 era and my PS4 is for racing games. Maybe if EA loses the license the new license will go to 2k Sega. We had the spectacular catch in Madden 08.
Agreed! This may be small but I love how college football 25 player models look like actual players while Madden player models all suffer from chicken leg syndrome. Also, player likeness stops at player models necks...like.... smh. Great vid as always.
The only question I have is, why did madden 13 totally restructure everything you had built a decent foundation on the seventh generation of home consoles? Why just ruin it like that?
I think someone lost a bet at ea😂😂 I don't know who or what thought madden 13 was a good idea...wtf was connected careers😂..they took fantasy draft off, made the gameplay horrible..just horrible stuff
EricRayWeather made a video talking about this years ago. According a former EA lead designer, the idea for going from Madden 12's system Connected Franchise was to be able to combine Franchise, head coach, and Superstar into one playable mode, so you didn't have to make separate profiles for each role you wanted to play. Unfortunately, the project was a coding nightmare, yet EA forced it into Madden anyways.
@@Misterfreezeable that and EA wanted their new frostbite engine in everything heard it was a pain in the ass to deal with when it came to sports games
People keep saying Madden is in danger of losing the exclusive deal, but isn't this the same game that sells well on every iteration? Nothing will change as long as people continue to buy and support the game. There needs to be a loss financially before companies address an issue.
CFB mostly has bad pursuit angles and bad tackling by design so the game feels high pace like irl. The M25 beta didn't have that but it plays about the same with the same new movement & animations. Boom tech does make M25 tackling feel way better and you do see a hint of physics and uniqueness in outcomes more than CFB as well. It doesn't really feel or look as good as the old ignite Engine physics but it does feel like a start unlike all the other times they claimed to work on physics lately. Overall, I actually liked the gameplay.
I'm pretty sure they included Fields as a kick returner in the trailer specifically because it's something the Steelers have actually tossed around the idea of doing this season, and showing players that they have the freedom to use a QB to return kicks if they want to.
EA gets roasted year after year, I've never heard of them actually asking the fans what they want... they couldn't care less as long as the NFL licensing checks clear every year. screw EA..
As someone who wants to develop a Football video game series myself one day, this is one of the reasons why ive grown so distant from the new Maddens. It's getting repetitive, bland, and unoriginal. The last Madden game i thoroughly enjoyed was Madden 12. My favorite Maddens being 2003, 2004, and 2005
WE NEED THAT INTERVIEW AND I HOPE AND PLEED EA JUST GIVE UP THE EXCLUSIVE LICENSE PLEASE LET THE SPORTS GENRE GROW YOU HAVE HELD IT BACK FOR OVER A DECADE DUE TO GREED LET OTHER COMPANIES MAKE NFL GAMES AND IF YOU WANT TO TAKE IT AGAIN AFTER 5YRS SO BE IT AT THAT POINT SOMEONE WOULD HAVE MADE A MODERN ESPN 2K5 OR BETTER THAT I KNOW SOMEONE CAN MAKE OUT HERE WITH ALL THIS NEW TECH
I hope, pray, beg, fall to my knees, and cry everyday that one day the nba and especially the nfl get rid of exclusive rights, it’s holding the sports gaming industry back so much
In spite of all this new stuff - positives and negatives included - the thing that’s really gonna make or break this game as usual is what Ryan Moody keeps hammering home: the bugs and glitches. As long as those are ever-present and routinely affect the outcome of games as they have been doing for so long, the series is going to remain stuck in the game vicious cycle.
I said this before and I’ll say it again. Why is Madden making every tackle a hit stick shoulder pad tackle like players don’t wrap up to tackle anymore? It looks goofy and of course more tackles can be broken like that. It also makes gang tackling obsolete if all a defender does all game is lowers his shoulders instead of wrapping up and the ball carrier goes straight down. Hit stick or shoulder hit tackles are usually done on bang bang plays or sideline runs/catches or right after the catch which usually leads to a personal foul. They do not happen every play especially in open field
Madden 25 and College 25 are pretty much the same game, but somehow College is a good game and Madden is bad game? I think they both suck for the modern day. I could live with the half-ass gameplay if they could make franchise mode incredible. Classic teams would also help persuade me.
CFB is not advertised as a sim game nor does it have the exclusive license. It would be fine to be a bit less harsh on Madden if 2K were still allowed to make football games
The fact that they charge $70 for this is criminal. It's Madden. It's basically the same game year in and year out. They try to trick you into thinking you're getting a bunch of new stuff but it's basically a roster update with more animations thrown in.
It's NOT on Madden anymore , Its on the NFL for keeping and allowing Madden to still have and hold the exclusive NFL license to be the only Company to make a NFL game. We need to get in the NFL ears not EA at this point.
Packers fan here , one thing I’ve noticed with many madden trailers they always show the packers getting embarrassed in the trailers like damn , at one point they had odell doing the one hand grab on us in the trailer and they constantly disrespect us like we dont go to the play offs every year
Boom tech tackling literally means no fundamental wrap up tackles. Just shoulder & arm tackles. That clip when Zay flowers run the bubble screen is a prime example!!
Depending on how you look at it, CFB 25 could be seen as “more realistic sim” than Madden. Looking at it from the view of the lack of canned animations, free flowing player movement. Thats such a huge part of gameplay, a huge point of contention, and a reason I prefer CFB as a realistic option over Madden
Yeah it's so real players taking bad pursuit angles 95+ % of the time o line missing blocks by pivoting on a spot and watching the rusher ball going through defence hands bad AI zone logic on defence very SIM and realistic
@@tdup191 that’s fine, I have a million issues with this game as well, including the things he listed. However, Madden has those same issues. I’m not going to pretend there aren’t things that are much improved in this game compared to Madden, though. That’s just dishonest. Therefore, my point stands.
I love how you play to your fan base, those who hate EA and the Madden Franchise. As you say in your video, college football, with its exclusive license, never said it was a sim-style game, but EA never said its game was a totally sim-based game. They just hold a license that prevents competition.
Why the NFL and EA are allowed to eliminate fair competition in the market remains a mystery. The improved hit stick should bring back knocking a player helmet off along with an injury cart for injuries. Maybe even bring back the chain gang to confirm a questionable first down.
Also something else I noticed(that might add to the fact that I stopped playing outside of The sports games getting worse) that is unfortunate at least as far as the sports games that have Ultimate Team style gambling modes, I used to always make a franchise in them, but I swear whenever you play MyTeam or the other modes like that and actually get into them and the dopamine hits and addiction it can build, it does something in your brain(at least in mine) that totally nerfs my enjoyment in normal modes and I HATE it 😢.. And not only in MyTeam, but it's the same after playing MyFaction in WWE 2K. I used to always play their version of Franchise, Universe Mode, or I'd just play the tournaments. I'd download a ton of Creations, and just play for hours! And I did that every year! But now I do it for about 20 minutes and get bored and I go back to MyFaction. Even though it DRIVES me nuts, even though they made the gameplay worse so that people get frustrated and buy more cards/packs, and even though the mode is barebones and I'm not even enjoying myself!! I STILL go back, it sucks, and I wish I could fix myself 😢.
If CFB isnt advertising a sim gameplay I honestly don't want it bc being arcadey sounds like an excuse to not need to put in the work to improve it. The trenched have been an issue for me since 2007 and its gotten better for the most part but letting defenders go for no reason like the RT pass blocking issue the last couple years
Don’t get me wrong it will be an improvement from 24 but that’s every year with the bar so low I don’t really have a reason to buy it when I have cfb 25 and I can play it on gamepass next summer. Also it’s nice but also crazy for EA to make good gamplay improvements took the good features and feedback from cfb 25 to add them to madden
What!?? Madden was a straight up simulation in the early 2000s. In 2001 player momentum while running the ball was so realistic, that people were whining about it and EA had to go more arcadey. But to say it was not a sim back in those years is nuts
Hard take but I actually like Madden 13. I love how the physics are seemingly the best physics we have had in Madden ever imo. Madden 13 yes was an overall poor product to most. I believe it was an upgrade in a lot of areas of the on the field experience where should be the number 1 point anyways. The modes were pretty bad yes and there wasn’t much depth or customization. I currently have went back and am loving the game honestly. I have made a current today roster and am doing a season through just play now and keeping up with stats for the skill positions and records on my phone. For a season like game mode for myself. Madden 25 seemingly was a nice upgrade on the overall package. The gameplay got better on the player movement and was the best I’d say we have had. Now for some reasons WRs started to not go up and attack the ball like in 13 and also players speed differential wasn’t very good. Madden 13 had a great representation of differences in players speeds. Also Ratings did a good job for the most part. Madden 17 did the best when showcasing ratings but 13 was pretty solid as well. Madden 25 took a minor step back in this as well. I like Madden 25 but idk Madden 13 just hits the best for me I’d say on Gameplay. It’s too bad they didn’t work upon that foundation. Madden 25 was its own foundation for the most part if you really look at the difference from 13 and 25/14. Anyways glad I got that off my chest lol. SimHeadAcademy out… Soft Drink TV you the goat bro!
Big takeaways from Madden 25 for me (so far I haven't played it obviously): 1: Why not just call it Madden 2025 so avoid the confusion 2: We are nearing an entire decade since they switched to the Frostbite engine, and they are still reusing the same code they've been using since 2012. The longer they put this off, the worse it will get. They need to bite the bullet and start over. Ground up rework. EA is a multi-million-dollar company, no excuse as to why they can't put the time into making a brand-new game. 3: This goes for 2K as well, STOP MAKING LAST GEN GAMES. We are 4 years into the console generation. You can walk into the nearest GameStop/Target/Walmart/etc. and buy a "next-gen" (current-gen) console. People aren't going to leave last-gen if they keep making games for it. Many would buy a current-gen console to play new games (saw many people doing this just for CFB 25). All they are doing by continuing to make last-gen games is hamstringing themselves from making a better game. CFB 25 shows that well, its miles ahead of what Madden 25 looks like. 4: It appears that the reports of Madden 24 being a make-or-break game within the studio were complete bullshit. Madden 24 was just a less buggy Madden 23. Madden 25 appears to be Madden 24 with better animations. Feels like everyone forgot about that statement, seems to me it was exactly what everyone thought though, marketing. And it was forgotten about by the majority of people, probably exactly like they had hoped. 5: I hope Madden 26 is not just a copy-paste of CFB 25. The game has been successful, and it should be. It's a great game. But the NFL and CFB are EXTREMELY different sports. Same concept, similar rules, but there is a very distinct difference in the sport when watching. CFB 25, like you mentioned, has gameplay that works for a CFB game. Madden does not have gameplay that works for an NFL game, and while it would be more enjoyable with CFB 25's gameplay, it still wouldn't be close to an NFL experience. Back to my second point, start over. Rework it from the ground up. I truly hope they make their own game, but I know deep down that they won't. Alright, sorry for the yappathon. Great video as always my man.
For people who played football in real life.. they know that height and weight aren’t the end all be all for makin a tackle/play when head on. I’ve seen Maurice jones drew send Shaun Merriman into the next stratosphere on a pass block.
Im nearly 50 and here's some context. Ncaa football was always a barebones version of the madden that was going to release that year. So of course this college football is the barebones this years madden.
Blocking is definitely improved. During the second beta week, the spectacular catch animation was more varied. Scouting hasnt changed but better more informative ui and draft does look nicer and well improved. It does play very similar to Madden 24. But I will say this. It is a cleaned up version of Madden 24. Lot of ui improvements and the gameplay just plays cleaner than Madden 24 does. Excluding price tag, Madden 25 was very decent to play in beta and going back to play Madden 24, all that games issues are just magnified.
The thing is, I really liked Madden 24. I thought it was a huge step above Madden 23, and I really like what they're doing with 25. is it on par with where it should be? that’s debatable
Since we already had madden 25 in 2014 they should've used this year to scrap it and rebuild it from the ground up starting with getting rid of that frostbite bs...people could've still played college 25 for their football fix

3. Is there any game you can point to and say, "this is where things went wrong?"
The big buzz for college football was it was gone for 11 years if they never left what's said about madden would be being said about ncaa
As long as they keep releasing Madden on older consoles, there will never be any big tech improvments.
10:52 SAY IT LOUDER HOMIE! WE WANT CREATE A PLAY!!!!!! KEEP PREACHING MY GUY!!!! Great video!!
A 26 min video of you shitting on yet another madden.. today Is a good day
Took a shot for every time you said exclusive sim license now I’m black out drunk
I've played madden since 2004 when Michael Vick was unstoppable. Nothing is new about this game except the change of the cover athlete and year.
Last Madden game i liked was Madden 08 on the PC. I skipped the PS3 era and my PS4 is for racing games. Maybe if EA loses the license the new license will go to 2k Sega. We had the spectacular catch in Madden 08.
Looks like another year of 2k5 and NFL Street 2.
@@goldfox177 frostbite wasn’t until 5 years after M13.
As always, incredible content. Thanks Soft!
People keep saying Madden is in danger of losing the exclusive deal, but isn't this the same game that sells well on every iteration?
Nothing will change as long as people continue to buy and support the game. There needs to be a loss financially before companies address an issue.
Keep calling these FRAUDS out bro! We need competition in the NFL gaming sim.
Ian is the best! Truly had the community at heart and was always in the forums taking qs.
Tbh it don’t look bad but I’m going to stick to cfb the cfb atmosphere just different
CFB atmosphere was always better than Madden (and quite often in real life lol).
Madden just feels so barren now.
Love this video thanks for the overview
I'm pretty sure they included Fields as a kick returner in the trailer specifically because it's something the Steelers have actually tossed around the idea of doing this season, and showing players that they have the freedom to use a QB to return kicks if they want to.
Yea man can't wait for that interview
EA gets roasted year after year, I've never heard of them actually asking the fans what they want... they couldn't care less as long as the NFL licensing checks clear every year. screw EA..
Madden 25 is a 7 gigabyte update of Madden 24
I think college football 25 deserves a solid 8 maybe even an 8.5
Atp they shoulda put Travis Kelce on the cover and call it madden 25 (Taylor’s version)
I've always said the kicking animation is off and im glad to know it wasn't just me who noticed
As someone who wants to develop a Football video game series myself one day, this is one of the reasons why ive grown so distant from the new Maddens. It's getting repetitive, bland, and unoriginal. The last Madden game i thoroughly enjoyed was Madden 12. My favorite Maddens being 2003, 2004, and 2005
I appreciate what you do for the community!
If we get a slower version of CFB25 with better defense then we will have the best Madden since 17
Questions for Ian:
Why was franchise mode stripped ?
Was ultimate team the focus after madden 12?
Why’d you leave ea ?
Would love to hear from Ian about other things Madden has been lazy with lol
Cfb 25 is not advertised as a sim experience.
Right they are the same game with new animations
CFB is not advertised as a sim game nor does it have the exclusive license. It would be fine to be a bit less harsh on Madden if 2K were still allowed to make football games
Did you not listen to the video? Madden 25 is still built on the old platform while College 25 is essentially a rebuild on Frostbite.
The fact that they charge $70 for this is criminal. It's Madden. It's basically the same game year in and year out. They try to trick you into thinking you're getting a bunch of new stuff but it's basically a roster update with more animations thrown in.
Looks like it’ll be worth buying once it’s on sale for $40 on Black Friday/cyber Monday/ Christmas season
It's NOT on Madden anymore , Its on the NFL for keeping and allowing Madden to still have and hold the exclusive NFL license to be the only Company to make a NFL game. We need to get in the NFL ears not EA at this point.
Eagerly awaiting whatever Madden or College football game can make snow look halfway decent
Your as refreshing and exhilarating as an ice cold bottle of soda on a hot day.
Madden is as refreshing and exhilarating as a warmed up expired gazpacho soup in Arizona
Packers fan here , one thing I’ve noticed with many madden trailers they always show the packers getting embarrassed in the trailers like damn , at one point they had odell doing the one hand grab on us in the trailer and they constantly disrespect us like we dont go to the play offs every year
2 devs are bears fans
That kicking meter being sped up is crazy
Boom tech tackling literally means no fundamental wrap up tackles. Just shoulder & arm tackles. That clip when Zay flowers run the bubble screen is a prime example!!
for hit sticks yes, yk that you can still press x/a and do a wrap up tackle. Swear some people are too slow for their own good
Pacheco flexing after a 2 yard gain like he just carried 6 guys on his back is definitely something we've all wanted in this game!
It looks the same! Same as it did in 2015!!!!
Did you want them to throw a volcano on the 50 yd line? Really spice things up a bit?
even in 2015 the madden games had better gameplay than this shyt they sell nowadays
But it doesn't. Frostbite wasn't used on Madden in 2015.
Same
Yeah it's so real players taking bad pursuit angles 95+ % of the time o line missing blocks by pivoting on a spot and watching the rusher ball going through defence hands bad AI zone logic on defence very SIM and realistic
@@AFB14 go outside and yell louder
@@KDRusha lol he's right tho. The game is Madden with better ball trajectory
That sound coming out of the controller is gonna be cool I can’t lie
If they have the same commentary team, it’s a no.
They have 2 new ones with the same crew.
@@Swoopy-Prod, I just can’t listen to Brandon Gayton anymore.
I’m 99.99% certain that Spec Catch used to be a button in a madden a few years ago.
Only when prompted. Like you couldn’t make it on any given pass, only when the game told you could do so.
If CFB isnt advertising a sim gameplay I honestly don't want it bc being arcadey sounds like an excuse to not need to put in the work to improve it. The trenched have been an issue for me since 2007 and its gotten better for the most part but letting defenders go for no reason like the RT pass blocking issue the last couple years
The NFL hits being so watered down these days it should be easier than ever for them to make it physics based
Don’t get me wrong it will be an improvement from 24 but that’s every year with the bar so low I don’t really have a reason to buy it when I have cfb 25 and I can play it on gamepass next summer.
None of the PS2 maddens were sims lmao, NFL 2K and NFL fever were closer to being sims than Madden ever was
Hard take but I actually like Madden 13. SimHeadAcademy out… Soft Drink TV you the goat bro!
madden 13 was my first madden so i have a soft spot for it
Great breakdown ❤
Big takeaways from Madden 25 for me (so far I haven't played it obviously):
1: Why not just call it Madden 2025 so avoid the confusion
2: We are nearing an entire decade since they switched to the Frostbite engine, and they are still reusing the same code they've been using since 2012.
An interview with Ian C would be awesome!
Franchise Mode will determine whether I buy the game or not.
Same
It will be a step in the right direction this year /s
you put more effort for this video than EA did for the entire game
I can't wait until the interview with ian
Its the same game with some new garnish. We'll be playing CFB 25
For people who played football in real life.. they know that height and weight aren’t the end all be all for makin a tackle/play when head on. I’ve seen Maurice jones drew send Shaun Merriman into the next stratosphere on a pass block.
Well i was stoked for 25s release but every party needs a pooper😢😂
Im nearly 50 and here's some context. Ncaa football was always a barebones version of the madden that was going to release that year. So of course this college football is the barebones this years madden.
I Hope The Team Builder Site For Madden Isn't As Messed Up As It Is For The EA College football game
That same juke hurdle tackle sequence at the end of the first trailer I've literally seen happen in CFB 25
Since we already had madden 25 in 2014 they should've used this year to scrap it and rebuild it from the ground up starting with getting rid of that frostbite bs...people could've still played college 25 for their football fix
