I left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple log cabins and structures from the timber on the land.

SIF, THOR'S WIFE...If you want to increase her survival chances, you MUST remove 3/4 of her leaves! The problem is when you dug her up, you removed a lot of her roots. She can no longer provide enough water to support the amount of leaves she has, so, remove bottom leaves! It's better to remove the older ones, and keep the newer ones at the top of the tree! Water every day for the first week, then every 2 or 3 days for the next 3 weeks. Water deep to get deep roots otherwise you encourage surface roots. Also, plant at the depth she originally grew at. Then, mulch around tree (retains water and discourages weeds) being careful to leave a few inches of NO mulch around tree. Mulching up against the bark makes it easy for bugs to get under bark which will kill the tree.
CONGRATULATIONS on 100,000! from one of the first 100! OOGA BOOGA!

Great watering tip. I would also make a bowl around the base of the tree in the dirt. This will help retain water when it rains and give the tree a better chance of survival.

I have a couple of questions but first let's fact check lol Jeanne D'arc had no children and therefore no descendants. OK I agree with the other comments about firewood and storing it, you have lots of waste lumber, downed trees and bark shavings which if stored correctly will be ready to use next winter if not this. Will you in the future be collecting rainwater from your roof? This is very common in New Zealand and works very well. I wonder if your stove window is glass? If so might I suggest you clean it with household ammonia as it does not contain water so does not foster crazing or potential cracking. I only just discovered your channel and have been binge watching to catch up which has made evident the improvement in skills and confidence. Onward and upward! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

28:40 Hi James. I inspect roofs for a living in Ontario. You have installed the wrong type of metal flashing and your solution is temporary. You installed a metal "cap" flashing when you need a simple metal flashing tucked underneath the roof panel. This makes your panel cuts crucial as that will be the finished look (same as the bottom of the roof). Do this and you never have to worry about your roof. You're 98% done. Not sure if you've considered insulating the underside of your roof but you'll need to. Ooga booga.

Hi James, a tip that might help preserve your ice a little longer in your new Yeti ice box. If you use ice cubes they melt and the water makes your food wet and soggy. Try freezing 2L bottles of water and put these in your ice box, the ice last longer and one melted the bottles keep water off your food, no need to drain the ice box either.

    The Ballad of James Alofs
From the big city life to the wild frontier,
James Alofs set sail, his mission was clear.
A Toronto-born lad with a dream in his heart,
To build a homestead and make a fresh start.
Ten years in L.A. and Beijing's grand scene,
A fish out of water, in the wild he’s been.
But with camping trips and MBA in hand,
He’s ready to conquer this untamed land.
Oh, James Alofs, steadfast and strong,
In the wilds of Canada, where he belongs.
With logs and dreams, he’ll builds anew,
Guardian of Thor’s Oak, his vision is true.
With the butt and pass, his cabin will rise,
A sleeping loft and steel roof 'neath the skies.
No milling or notching, just chinking the gaps,
With the wisdom he gained from the builder's maps.
He dreams of ten children, an Irish Wolfhound,
In streams he will bathe, winter’s ice all around.
On steak, Cherries and Berries, he thrives,
With Gundabad’s glorious ATV, his spirit revives.
With Strength and Honor as his guiding creed,
And Ooga Booga for a laugh indeed,
James marches forth with a hearty cheer,
In the wilderness vast, he shows no fear.
A Roman heart, with Norse gods in his soul,
In his Wolfsmilk clothes, he'll reach his goal.
Though his tent caught fire, his spirit stayed free,
For nothing can stop this homesteading spree.
So raise a glass to James, the off-grid knight,
In the wilderness vast, he’ll shine his light.
With strength and honor, he’ll build his domain,
In the heart of Wild Homestead, forever he'll reign.
    -David Darling

    Congrats on the 100,000!
I’m in a different climate from you in the SE US, but I’ve done a lot of transplants. I’d say it has a solid chance of coming back where you’re at. The main things to think about are packing the soil like you did, to make sure there are no air pockets. Roots hit those and naturally die. It’s why you don’t see many above ground roots, just those exposed over time.
It’ll be in shock. So I’d water it every day for a week, then once a week, or as needed for this summer. Should be fine next year. I’d also mulch it. That will keep the soil at an even temp and moisture level. Don’t fertilize it now. I know you planted it on your Thunder hole, but it won’t reach that for a while. That’s good since that “fertilizer” is still hot. But it can’t handle chemical fertilizers right now. Other than that, it looks good.
I wouldn’t prune anything on them now. Maximize photosynthesis and growth. As they get bigger, though, prune so they only put energy into desirable growth. Don’t let them spend 4yrs growing two branches that will cross and rub. Pick one and prune every year when they’re tiny. Once it reaches a certain size, just let it do what it’s gonna do.
Pruning rules are to never remove more than 30% of the tree in a year, not counting dead branches. Prune branches that will cause trouble in the future, like crossing and rubbing on another branch, branches growing inward, a branch that’s right over another and very close. You want at least 6” between where branches go into the trunk or you’ll make weak wood. As they thicken, the space will shrink.
Trimming the tips of branches causes the growth hormone to go back down the branch and cause back budding.
    Hope any of this helps.

My idea for your hardware cloth.
First thought is to fold the cloth so that you have a 90degree. Top half spans the distance across your gap from logs to underside of floor. The remaining 90’s down into your gravel a foot. This allows several things.
    1. You can insulate from above And protect from mice coming through and chewing the insulation and getting in.
    2. With the hardware cloth perpendicular and into the ground 12” you are stopping most burrowing creatures from gaining access to the underside of your cabin. ( ground hogs, squirrels, mice are quite industrious).
When you bury the ground cloth leave approximately 6” at a 90 degree angle facing outward , so the weight of your backfill( gravel for drainage) holds it in place and makes it that much harder for anything to burrow under.
I have done this several times in the past for our hunting cabins and it works.
Good luck, congratulations on the 100k!! Look forward to next week! And you got a lot done this week!!

When you get your pup, look into the halo collar. You can create virtual boundaries using GPS. You will also be able to see where your pup is on the map if they like to explore. I have had one with my dog nearly 4 years and love it.

I love the story of Clovis the Unifier. I once knew a down home Appalachian mountain man (hillbilly). His name was Clovis Blankenship from West Virginia. I never would have imagined that his name would have any kind of relationship with Louis XVI. Clovis the Great! James the Curious! Always learning

Hey James, I hope you see this but my family owns a historic restoration company and we specialize in log cabins and I highly recommend coating your next buildings with a heated mixture of mineral spirits, boiled linseed oil, and wax. This mixture keeps the natural look of the wood as well as waterproofs it and protects the logs. If you are interested I would be honored to let you know better how to ratio the proportions correctly.

Taking great care of the trees! Getting more mill time in! Huzzah to those window makers thats incredible! It's really cool to hear the breakdown of the costs of the raw material - its striking sometimes but doing all this on your own with the help of your neighbors is just infinitely less expensive vs a contractor. It is so cool to see the progress on the homestead and the channel major congrats on the 100k! It's been such a pleasure to be with ya on the journey! "'Ello gov'nor!" and "Morin Govna" is popularly associated with British TV shows and movies that feature Cockney characters. It’s particularly iconic in shows like "Only Fools and Horses" and movies like "Mary Poppins" and "My Fair Lady," "Sherlock Holmes," and various adaptations of Charles Dickens' The phrase often appears in media to depict a stereotypical Cockney accent and character.

I bought a 10,000 & 20,000 liter heavy duty water bladder for rain catchment. We're in NW Arizona and the more storage you have the better. You should get 1 and plumb it into the gutter. You could even use a 12vt pump with small solar panel to transfer 20 to 50 gallons into your attic for pressurized water flow.

Mate keeping your esky ice frozen tip, here in the Northern Territory in Australia when going bush for a week where the temp is in the 38° to 40°s a slab of dry ice on the bottom then a sheet of cardboard then chuck all the cryovac meat and stuff on top using the dry ice stops every thing getting soggy and dry ice no water just evaporates and Australian beef way better than that kiwi stuff😉👍🇦🇺

    Epic achievement, James.
Recently found your channel after the cross-over episode with Xander then went back and started from the beginning.
To have gone from the start with you cutting a (foot) path through the bush to a nearly completed cabin, road, and clear areas is impressive.
You talked about the additional structures planned. Any intent to have some chickens, Icelandic perhaps? A critter-proof coop and run would be an interesting construction task.
    Hope those oaks make it.
    Peace.
