  • The Butterfly is one of the most popular Irish slip jigs. In this fiddle lesson I demonstrate the basic melody, using on-screen sheet music. I then make suggestions for ornamentation and bowing, and discuss the tempo, chords and ending. A free pdf of the sheet music is available. (see below).

I first heard this tune in 'The Secret of Roan Inish' - a 1994 movie by John Sayles. Loved it ever since. Thanks for the lesson!

Thank you very, very much Chris for this video.
"The Butterfly "is one of my favorite tunes, it' s true: its movement seems to imitate the flight of a butterfly
that moves up and down indistinctly from the flapping of its wings.
I also love it because it is the first tune I can play and reproduce with the real accents of the Irish style :))
In my score there is a D instead a C, but in C is more intresting, you are in right.
Wonderful the full version you played, is it your own arrangement? I have only the parts one, two and three.

Hi Mary. Glad you enjoyed the video! No, it's not particularly my arrangement . The original definitely has three parts and I can't imagine leaving one out!

Hi... I know someone that was a professional violinist at age of 20 (he played the campanella at age 20 professionally) but due to life issues & his finger broke up he stopped playing professionally from 40 years (he play but not professionally)
If he return practicing can he return his capabilities at age of 60?

Hi Gigi. Never say never! He might consider starting again not with classical but a fiddle style- that way it wouldn't feel so frustrating trying to get back what he had before, and it would make it a new adventure!

@@useruser34587 It depends on his attitude and determination. If he wants to do it enough, he will do it!
