  • MIDI is ubiquitous, but how did it get developed? It was a long road and Jeff Rona had a huge part in making MIDI the standard protocol for synchronizing musical instruments and devices.

This is ¨Our Story¨ as Audio Engineers, Studio Musicians, Composer and so on!. I knew from a long time that Jeff was involved in the development of MIDI but to have this story being told by one of the people responsible for the existence of MIDi is Priceless!. This video should definitely be watched by all of those who take this career seriously! and Finally!! a standing ovation to all of those who made it possible for MIDI to exist!!!!. Thank You Jeff!!!!

I graduated as an Electrical Engineer in 1981 and MIDI has become (and remains) an amazing part of my musical journey. It's great to here the story behind the technology... Thanks Jeff, well done!

I can remember back in the early days plugging a MIDI cable into my Prophet 600 and DX7 and having them respond to events from the other. My mind was blown. Thank you, Jeff and all of the engineers that revolutionized music technology.

I had no idea that MIDI was such a triumph of project tmanagement. I’m also someone who lacks a strong engineering background (I know “just enough”) but definitely leads in communication and people management skills, I learned to play a similar role in software development, in the last two start-ups I worked at-all of this resonated with me far more than I was expecting. Thank you for sharing your story.

Fascinating! I was a kid when MIDI was born, and it's hard to imagine a world (or studio) without it! MIDI is why we can all have "home" studios! :)

Imagine how MIDI has essentially made it possible for anyone to create music. MIDI => affordable synth and drum machines => computer interfaces => sequencers / notation programs / synth editors => MIDI keyboard, guitar, drum, wind controllers => GM => DAWs => plugins => composition assistants, etc.

@jbognap - yes! All the stuff we now take for granted was created at some point by folks like Jeff... he's a great guy.

Of the hundreds of hours I've logged (hopefully not yet thousands ;)) watching UA-cam videos, this was one of the most interesting 34-minute stretches yet. Hats off to Jeff and to the filmmakers (as well as to the various others mentioned here who made it actually gel, when it could have faltered). Bravo!

the dedicated person for that award would be Dave Smith. Jeff was the organisation talent, managing the communication between the various parties involved, which is a hell of a job he did amazingly well. But the basic protocol and technical architecture was designed by Dave Smith.

Great video. My first dealings with MIDI were a Sequential Circuits card plugged into a Commodore 64. MIDI has come a long way. I worked for Voyetra at the time, who were involved in defining the first MIDI specs. Keep up the great work, and oh yes, I really LOVE hearing your music on so many movies and TV shows. GREAT WORK

Fantastic - I've been using MIDI since the advent of Windows 98 - it was my introduction to the music world.
