  • MIDI Primer for DAWLESS - The MIDI implementation Chart.
    MIDI has been around since 1983 and version 2.0 is coming in 2020, MIDI is here to stay! One of the important thing to understand to get the most of your DAWLESS system it the infamous MIDI implementation Chart. When trying to get 2 MIDI devices to interact together, understanding what the capacities and limits of each is crucial.

    This is brilliant, don't know why it took me so long to find it. Very straightforward and carefully structured. Thank you! I am very grateful you took the time to do this.
    I have some training in IT networks and now realise MIDI is just a network protocol! There is broadcasting, masking and packet equivalents in MIDI

    So what about for example the faders and knobs on something like the programmable MIDI controllers like Keylab 61?... Is the best practice to map commonly used CC numbers or General CC numbers or Undefined CC numbers and just use the general and undefined and map them to the software mappings or what?

    Hello friend, I just came across this video and it's awesome, well done! I'm currently very deep in the rabbit hole of MIDI and am trying to control my Hammond XK-3c from my M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61. I am using 5-pin across one channel and can get all notes to play, as well as drawbar function and modulation/pitch bend. I'm trying to map access to the percussion controls as well as the Vibrato/Chorus controls and am struggling to map the parameters I've found in the XK-3c manual, to the controller. Slim chance you'll see this 4+ years later but thought I'd drop a comment nonetheless. Thanks for the informative video!

    Thanks for this. Very informative. I've learned a lot about what midi is and what messages do but I
    wish someone could show how you actually do this using hardware. I've searched the internet endlessly
    but it's always about what a midi implementation chart is but not how to do it physically using machines.
    Do you think you could do a video using a couple of machines? That would be great. Thanks again.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I need this. I do not understand it yet but I hope that I will after a few more views. I have an MAudio keyboard controller the old silver one and I am trying to control protocols 11 transport and faders. I also have an Alexis Vortex 2 and I am trying to control iPad synths like iM1 and Obsidian in NanoStudio 2

    Hi this is really helpful. I have a DTX Press 2 drum module. I would like to strike a pad to trigger start and stop in DAW Studio One Pro. At the moment I’ve tried MIDI learning the trigger pads by striking them but it does not work. Is there any way I can use the drum trigger pads of the dtx press 2 to start and stop a song in the DAW? Based on your video it would have to do with the system real-time messages in the implementation chart.

      For the pas to be able to trigger the sequence it as to be able to send SSC Messages (Start, Stop, Continu) . Often, triggers are sending notes (channel messages).

      @jeremylrodrigues892 you have to check in the manual. But I would not bet on it.

    how can MIDI Song Select command (System Common) be sent from a keyboard-controller, e.g. "F3 ..."?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  3 роки тому +1

      It is defined in its MIDI specs. If it is not there then it can’t do it.

    Are midi numbers universal or different for each device?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  3 роки тому +2

      The list of MIDI messages is universal. The fact is that a device or software respond to them is decided by the developper or maker. To go further, how the device or software respond to the MIDI message is also decided by the maker. So, the definition of the messages are universal, the application is not.

    which midi-controllers do sent "MIDI Song Select" commands (System Common messages)?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  3 роки тому

      They are usually called master keyboard and they have a full transport control (SSC + song location). Or it is a keyboard that has song capacity. Then it will also be able to control another sequencer.

    Does anyone remember Intelligent midi? What ever became of that. A simple default template that selects the most used settings by default? Settings for cc values and midi are generally set and forget. Ridiculous to repeat settings for every single device. Thats is why I generally don’t use control info . Can you say A I for music ?.👽the new midi standard should by now be intelligent. It’s ridiculous that it’s not already . Watch yourself explaining this and tell me I’m wrong and that this doesn’t need to be simplified. Like maybe a dedicated “knob “ for cc and midi channels on the front of every device instead of under the hood? These charts are way too cryptic period👽

      @@Nu-trix let’s hope it comes out in our lifetime cause manually setting everything up like this is an unruly pain ! And most of these choices are the same on almost all the devices too! So why make it this ridiculous in the first place. Definitely helped sell a lot of sampling workstations lol! Peace 👽
