    Tim. Great video! I play senior softball at the age of 64. I'm a very average player and most of the time play the outfield. Since viewing the video over the last year, I play second base occasionally. This video has really helped. It taught me to stay down on the ball, allowing to field the ball with ease. Thanks!

    In the beginning of the video it says "in order to be strong on offense." Hitting is offense. Fielding is defense.

      LOL that bothered me too. At first I thought she meant "in order to understand how a defense works, so the offense can adjust and, like, see who isn't playing defense properly so you can try to hit in that general direction".
      But now I think she just misspoke

    starting with your glove on the ground is great if the ball is hit directly at you!! Mid air is ideal to increase reaction time when moving in any direction. rather than coming up to turn and run

    Thank you, I started playing slowpitch, after almost 2 decades of not playing baseball. Great reminder on how to do grounders. I see it a lot popping out with people not covering, or not bringing it in. And with the larger ball size it happens more for me.

    You don't start with the glove on the ground as shown here. You start in an athletic position, not anchored to the ground

    Im an assistant coach on my daughters travel softball team and was late for practice one day. I've always taught my daughter to stay low and keep glove right below chin. Well since i wasnt there a parent wanted to teach her to get her glove on the ground. And was rocketing ground balls to her in the position i taught her and was getting beamed pretty good. I got to practice late and found this out and was very unhappy. I told the parent which comes at you faster, a ground ball or line drive? I said line drive. He didnt believe so. Which its common sense. So at our next tournament his daughter was playing 3rd in the glove down position. My daughter plays 1st. His daughter had a line drive that was belted by her head and would've had no time to react if it was coming for her head. Too bad he wasnt there to see it to tell him....told ya so, and thank God it didnt hit her head. Safety first. Also you see a lot of college players that start with their glove down will reset themselves anyway. So i teach my daughter the baseball approach cuz of this. Glove on the ground is just ridiculous to me. Anything mid to high you're gonna have to flip your glove completely around and backhand it. This is a pet peeve of mine and makes no sense.

    A lot of assumptions made here. Some good tips but the whole you only have to move your glove up thing is assuming the ball comes right to you. Which in reality rarely happens. You will notice as you start to shift your position to the balls path that your glove naturally comes up completely negating the point of starting with your glove down (you can even see the girl demoing this in the video doing it). Your also assuming its a grounder and if it isn't your doubling the distance you need to move your glove. This is a great way to field a grounder but I would never start this way. As a batter if I see a team with their gloves on the ground you can guarantee I am hitting the ball just over their heads. Just bend your knees and keep your glove close to your waist. If its hit high you have the option to jump given your already in the launch position, you can quickly side step, or charge the ball. No one side steps or charges with their glove dragging on the ground so why start with it there?
    That said the point about walking into your stance is a good one. If you play softball you will see the good players doing this its a great way to keep on your toes. You will often see not good players sit in their stance between pitches which really can wear you out in the long run and also makes it in to a resting position rather then a launching position.

    Have to add my 2 cents good video but ,you can also creep then get around the ball and stay low yeah keep the glove open and low in a ready stance.Never let the ball come right to you always move towards the ball.Unless its a rocket ground ball and you have no time to creep in to get around the ball.Yes this is a beginners video

      @@yeeyee139 No softball was invented because during world war 2 men were in war and they needed people to play baseball for them which was women. Women were actually really good at it it and was very entertaining and I assume you know what happens next. But you are correct baseball was invented before softball

    Glove low to the ground in the ready position? Who's going to cover medical expenses if a line drive hits the player in the face? Feet spread wide apart? Not really a good setup to explode left or right for a GB at max range.

      It's called funneling the ball to the middle of your body then to your throwing position. Every MLB & college softball player does it.

    This is actually an extremely beginners way how to catch a grounder. I wouldnt teach my children to even do this because it develops bad habits. If the ball hits the edge of the glove even the slightest of bit at a decent rate of speed, this method spells t-h-e-y g-e-t a f-r-e-e b-a-s-e. The only thing that she said that I can appreciate her saying to teach others is to use 2 hands. I travel the Pacific playing softball and I have a bit of experience in this realm but I suggest fielding softballs just like you do baseballs. This technique has worked for me and those around me.

    • @kalyssazachnick33
      @kalyssazachnick33 9 років тому +1

      Andy Thompson actually that is a bad way to teach fastpitch fielding techniques .... andy you must not have any background in fastpitch... the game is much different. You dont field balls the same as baseball...similar but different.... investigate and learn softball before you comment on it.... good luck

    • @Caiteysdad
      @Caiteysdad 9 років тому

      I don't have any experience actually playing fastpitch softball but I coach and I can't imagine it changing that much. Again, this was just my opinion and I didn't mean any harm by my comment; I could very well be wrong. The method of starting out with your gloving being on the ground sounds like a good technique for elderly people or others whom have slower response times, but again, I could be wrong.

    • @kalyssazachnick33
      @kalyssazachnick33 9 років тому +1

      elderly people...LOL... fastpitch is a much faster game than baseball... pitching is 43 feet as opposed to 60.6.. bases are 60ft instead of 90...speed of the game is incredible...lefty slappers 2.7 seconds to first base... fielding and throwing are different within the same scope but different nevertheless... play 3rd or 1st 45 feet away from home and tell me that having your glove on the ground is more for of an elderly approach...no harm assumed no harm taken but yes you could be wrong

    • @deansvenvold1458
      @deansvenvold1458 3 роки тому +1

      There is no difference in how you field balls between baseball and fast pitch softball. Just like no difference in hitting. Watch the elite players in both. Mechanics are basically the same.
