What we do is use cattle to do much of the weed control by placing a temporary polybraid (electrified) next to the trees and plants we don't want grazed. They convert the green matter into a microbe rich soil amendment also.

I've got electric Fence and I wanted to do that, but I just have so many daily or weekly jobs already, I can't be dealing with moving an electric fence all the time. Trying to just use permanen fencing and have less regular jobs

on your scale you will only move an electric fence every few months - with cattle and sheep you need infrastructure and knowledge - so if you cant manage grazing animals properly dont even think about it - stick to what you are doing - which gets me back to the point - to create a permanent agriculture you need scale and grazing animals

for every $100,000 you spend (inc labour) what is your return per annum from production?

That's such a difficult answer as it depends on what tree it is you plant and if you also plant Ally crops and which ones. And also if the 100k includes land and equipment or not. If you just plant trees, you don't get much return for a few years but then get a return for many, many years. Also, here in Portugal, the government matched what you invest for a new firm and pays annual subsodies for the plantations.

i am referring only to your unique permaculture farm. will it ever pay a basic wage to its laborers ?

@@gardenersgraziers7261 Oh I see, yes. It currently pays 2 full-time people and a few part-time people. we have to be creative. selling plants, ally crops (veg), animals, doing markets, teaching courses. I personally work here 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

nice - so if you break it down to food production only it will never be capable of being economically viable. or maybe at some point in the future - just saw a similar farm in sweden that started off without paying its staff shut down its commercial food operation - because they had to start paying wages - lets live in hope that one day somebody might create a viable model for others to mimic. viable mixed farms can be done now with a dependency upon fossil fuels - but not without. you cant get past oil and coal today (without scale) unless you let the other half of the world starve.

@@gardenersgraziers7261 the reality is people are lazy to buy from us and find it easier to buy from the supermarket. but our food production veggie boxes does pay for 1 part time staff member who only manages that
