Great question and something I can’t believe I haven’t really considered before? I assume the effects are in order because the noise gate is up the top. I need to do some experimenting. This needs to go on the list for a future video!

Thanks Danny. Yes, I wish they would improve the gate to make it usable. I guess it is designed more for handling guitar distortion noise and the like. A good gate plugin is actually really useful if you can set it to just turn down the volume at a certain level rather than turning it off completely. I might need to look for a third party AU plug-in that does this.
Good rundown of the process in GarageBand. Everything I was seeing elsewhere only mentioned the instruments, which made me wonder if it even had passable vocal editing. I edit a podcast, so vocals are all that matter for me, I don't care about the drum kit. Good to know it has all the features I use currently use on my desktop. Except noise reduction as good as what Audacity does(focuses on frequency, not volume). Still looking for an iPad option. I know iMovie has a noise reduction feature. Noise gate definitely wouldn't be optimal.
Hey Garrett. So, if you’re willing to spend a few bucks, the Brusfri noise reduction plugin will be a game changer for you. ua-cam.com/video/qo-uZGnulNo/v-deo.html
Thanks for this Pete. I often go back to it for reference. Is there a way of producing a slap back (short delay)? Does the Tape Delay effect do this? I’ve heard that it helps vocals stand out rather than giving depth as with reverb ✌️

Great stuff again Pete. Quick question... Do most of the well known singers/bands have their vocals tweaked like this in professional recordings by audio engineers?
Hey there. It does vary based on the type of music, but most vocalists when recorded in the studio have some sort of processing on their vocal tracks. Usually at least compression, EQ, reverb and maybe delay. Not all, and not all the time, but most... and most of the time.
To chip in, I wondered about this too, and after motoring around, and obtaining a couple of quality books teaching generalised techniques and aspects, regardless of DAW selection, it seems incredibly common for vocals to be gated, compressed, chopped, automated volume imposed like down to vowel level, and so on! If you listen to some contemporary stuff by female pop artists, it is clear there must be astonishing attention to each and every vowel, let alone syllable. My other input to this is two different perspectives to the documentary with co-operation of Peter Gabriel about his ‘so’ album. I found it encouraging that ‘so’ (sledgehammer etc) was pedantically produced, produced and produced a bit more, note by note adjustments to even performances by excellent musicians. My brother who also loves that album said he had been disillusioned by this ‘behind the curtain’ insight! However, he’s not into making his own music, so the actual need to tweak, manipulate and massage any given performance so it passes muster, is not a concern for him...I remain, more impressed by how ‘so’ was slaved over, and more encouraged than ever. Hey Jayson. I usually do a little of both. I get a decent rough mix down to record my vocals over and then it makes the mixing process at the end much easier.

Hi Pete, on this video you mentioned recording in Punchy Presence then changing to Lead Vocals, does that make a difference in sound rather than just recording in Lead Vocals straight off?
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete! Your videos always motivate me to make more music! I guess i'll have to just play a little guitar and copy paste because im not that good at guitars😅 But seriously Thank you so much!
I think I'm decided to have my work mixed professionally for one of my project. Since the engineers usually ask for the clean tracks and no effects, I'm wondering if volume automation count as an effect they don't want either? Is it an exception as it's only about the balance of loudness of the track or does it work like a plugin in which case it's needs to be passed by before bouncing? Thank you once again for your help.
Hey there my friend. Like most things in audio and mixing the answer is a big “it depends”. Technically any gain changes or automation are part of the mixing process, but if you want to save the mix engineer time and you’re confident you get get the balance close through automation, you can automate and then render out a WAV file. Just be super careful that you are not clipping (going over 0dB) and introducing any distortion in the track as this won’t be removable once it’s part of the rendered track.
@@PeteJohnsMusic ok. I understood. Super clear! Thank you very much Pete. It's so nice of you to answer , and so quickly. Plus making great music and videos about it! You are a being such a great inspiration! Showing that dedicating enough time to what we love, makes us feel good. God bless!
hello friend 🙋🏻♂️. I have a real Shure microphone. Tell me, which virtual microphone to use in GARAGEBAND for vocal recording and which settings are best? ANY VIRTUAL MICROPHONE TO CHOOSE?
Great video Pete, valuable information. 👍👍 One question though, I have a few tracks where the drums drop I and out. The only way I can do this is by muting the drums while the track is playing, as I recorded a flat beat all the way through. Is there any way I can do a live mix like this? So I’ve got the whole track in one wave file with the drums stopping and starting where I need them to. Thanks.
I have a question now! When mixing vocals, is it necessary to remove dead space where you are not singing? In the parts where I'm not singing, there is no background noise, so I don't think I have to cut it out. I notice many people chopping up their vocals to remove blank parts.
Hey there. The virtual instruments? Mostly it's down to selecting the right tones to begin with and then using some light EQ, compression, reverb to bring out the best qualities. ua-cam.com/video/KCdR6YYbg2I/v-deo.html
Hi Pete. I have another question for you. However, before I start I must add that we have something in common-Pete is included in my hometown, Peterborough, Ontario. Sorry for the dad joke! Anyways, here is my question: why do you prefer ‘punchy presence’, when you are recording. Just curious. Thanks and regards, Rob
Hey Rob! Firstly, I’m a big hockey fan and actually own a Peterborough Petes jersey. Just because it’s a cool hockey Jersey and has my name on it. 😅 So, I like punchy prescience because it has a little more compression and edge to it, so when I’m monitoring my vocals while singing, especially louder songs, I can hear myself on the headphones over the music. It also has no pitch control on by default, which ensure no latency in the audio (which the pitch control introduces). You could just use “lead vocals” or any other preset and tweak it (eg. Turn pitch control off) but I tend to lean towards punchy prescience most of the time.
Hi Pete. That’s amazing...you live all the way on the other side of the world, Australia (Melbourne, I believe), and have a Peterborough Pete’s hockey jersey! Their hometown arena is only a 20 minute walk from my house! As an aside - my son, Trev, played in the minor Pete’s organization and played with Mike Fisher, who ended up playing for the Nashville predators and is now married to Carrie Underwood. (I wonder if Carrie uses IOS GarageBand for her recordings?). Thanks for your feedback on ‘punchy presence’ for recording. I’m gonna try it today. Thanks again for all of your instructional videos. They are very, very helpful! Regards, Rob
Hi Pete! Thanks for your tutorials, I’m a beginner. I have a question: I am able to record guitar and vocals (recorded separately and sounding ok) however, I don’t see any waveform of both. I’m using Audio Technica usb mic to ipad mini. Thanks again for you help!
Hi Pete. One problem I noticed while exporting to Photo library is it compresses the audio to mono (even when exporting to 1080p!). I want to retain the pan effect and the quality of my music. If you have any suggestions please comment.
Hi there. What are you using to export to the photo library? If you share as stereo audio and then export a video using iMovie or another editor you should duet stereo audio?
Pete Johns Sorry but it seems I’ve commented on wrong video I was trying to comment on your other video which titles “how to export from iMovie iOS” (might be due to binge watching your videos!) So I tried to make a metal song which has quite a panning effect at the intro and exported as an uncompressed wav. Then I made a little video clip and compiled that with the audio in iMovie on my iPad. Now when I exported the video to my photo library it ruined all the panning effect I put in that song which clearly means iMovie compressed the audio to mono. Later I even tried saving video as a file in iCloud but still hearing that ugly mono audio. I exported it to my UA-cam page anyhow here ua-cam.com/video/ck3FLqCVqwA/v-deo.html. Also, I exported the same uncompressed wav audio file to soundcloud here soundcloud.com/ashish-marwha/p3-messiah-beta . You’ll clearly notice the huge difference! I’m guessing it should not be a problem in iMovie mac version but I don’t have a Mac. Lemme know if you also had same issue in iOS
EQ. Often that “mud” in the midrange is what makes the vocals get buried. You’ll get there!! ua-cam.com/video/ccn6hzAwIe8/v-deo.html Or you can thicken them up. ua-cam.com/video/LsMWAwyqooU/v-deo.html

Pete Johns thank you 🙏 😊
Very welcome.
What best way to dive into garageband and just go Agra’s make a demo sample
Hey there. Depends what sort of music you are creating. Here’s a video about recording an acoustic demo - ua-cam.com/video/FiFerT4ULUw/v-deo.html
And this series will get you familiar with all the different aspects of GarageBand - ua-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa56UTlzOg6CYtASLqyEeAaKi.html
Hi Pete, on this video you mentioned recording in Punchy Presence then changing to Lead Vocals, does that make a difference in sound rather than just recording in Lead Vocals straight off?
Hey there. So, the audio recorded is still just completely clean audio. All that you’re changing is the effects and things like compression and EQ.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks thought that was the case just wanted to check with someone who knows
How do you add strumming of guitars in garageband? Do you have to like record them through the microphone? Or are there any other method?
You can connect up a guitar using an audio interface or IRig, or mic it up as you say. This video will help - ua-cam.com/video/asWwOu5PpJU/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete! Your videos always motivate me to make more music! I guess i'll have to just play a little guitar and copy paste because im not that good at guitars😅 But seriously Thank you so much!
Excellent 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Cheers Johnny. 👍
God bless!
Very welcome my friend.
hello friend 🙋🏻♂️. I have a real Shure microphone. Tell me, which virtual microphone to use in GARAGEBAND for vocal recording and which settings are best? ANY VIRTUAL MICROPHONE TO CHOOSE?
Hey there. This video should help you with these options / ua-cam.com/video/_b6i6VIHTgg/v-deo.html
Great video Pete, valuable information. 👍👍
One question though, I have a few tracks where the drums drop I and out. The only way I can do this is by muting the drums while the track is playing, as I recorded a flat beat all the way through.
Is there any way I can do a live mix like this? So I’ve got the whole track in one wave file with the drums stopping and starting where I need them to.
Thanks.
It's interesting that you didn't roll off the base of your lead. I hear so many people say to use a high pass filter. 🤯😅
Yeah - it's all subjective. And I've probably change what I do since then. :D
Very nice song
Thank you my friend.
I have a question now! When mixing vocals, is it necessary to remove dead space where you are not singing? In the parts where I'm not singing, there is no background noise, so I don't think I have to cut it out. I notice many people chopping up their vocals to remove blank parts.
It can’t hurt, and as someone mentioned during the show, even the smallest amount of noise adds up if it’s multiple tracks.
How do you make instrumentals sound realistic in gb
Hey there. The virtual instruments? Mostly it's down to selecting the right tones to begin with and then using some light EQ, compression, reverb to bring out the best qualities. ua-cam.com/video/KCdR6YYbg2I/v-deo.html
I just really wanna know how to get a choir vocal
There’s a bunch of cool plugins for choir, or use the vocal transformer plugin. ua-cam.com/video/SVdg4bY7Tgg/v-deo.html
I have a problem where when I’m recording on a beat the bass on the beat goes low when I’m recording over any help ?
Might be up too loud and auto limiting. Try turning the volume down.
What can I do to get rid of some of the gritty sounds of my voice in mixing vocals?
EQ mostly. ua-cam.com/video/ccn6hzAwIe8/v-deo.html
Very helpful thank you. What tempo and key is this song?
Hey there. I actually can’t remember sorry! You can listen to the final song here - ua-cam.com/video/Al8HeV5w_60/v-deo.html
Does the order of the plugins in a vocal chain or any chain matter?
Will the sound sound different if the plugins were in a different order?
Hello! Yes, the plugin order will change the sound as it will process in order. This video will help. ua-cam.com/video/FfMd1ijxiOw/v-deo.html

So, I like punchy prescience because it has a little more compression and edge to it, so when I’m monitoring my vocals while singing, especially louder songs, I can hear myself on the headphones over the music.
Hey there. Might be that you’re input gain is set a little low? Maybe try merging the tracks? ua-cam.com/video/imcgX2bW8rk/v-deo.html
Pete Johns Thank Pete, will check this out 👍🏻
How can I record my acoustic piano with vocals
Either separately, or together using a multi channel interface. studiolivetoday.com/usb
excellent!
Thanks John. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
do you ever pre-mix? to get a idea of how you sound while in the process of recording or do u just record then edit everything after ?
Hi there. THese days I tend to mix "on the way in" quite a lot actually. It really helps with the final mix I find. How about you?
Pete Johns i gave up trying to record on my phone i couldn’t get the sound i wanted so now im on fl studios on a macbook and everything is pre mixed
Jae for rap most def GarageBand iPhone can be good at times but it’s mainly good for singing rnb and rock trust me look at Steve lacy
Pete Johns Sorry but it seems I’ve commented on wrong video I was trying to comment on your other video which titles “how to export from iMovie iOS” (might be due to binge watching your videos!)
So I tried to make a metal song which has quite a panning effect at the intro and exported as an uncompressed wav.
What microphone do you use?
For vocals, I tend to use an Audio Technica AT2020 most of the time. All my recommended gear is at studiolivetoday.com/gear
I probably asked a thousand questions by now! 😂🤦🏻♀️ What's the best way to make space in a mix for vocals?
EQ. Often that “mud” in the midrange is what makes the vocals get buried. You’ll get there!! ua-cam.com/video/ccn6hzAwIe8/v-deo.html
Or you can thicken them up. ua-cam.com/video/LsMWAwyqooU/v-deo.html
Do you offer mixing and mastering services?
Hey there. I generally do but have quite a backlog right now so if you need something done soon, I would probably recommend looking elsewhere. Fellow iOS creator Jade Starr is highly recommended - ua-cam.com/users/JadeStarr
@@PeteJohnsMusic ok no problem dude thanks anyway!
Hi Pete can I record a video using garage band?
Hey there. It’s an audio recording and mixing application, so not really. You can record audio to use on your videos though.
@@PeteJohnsMusic I thought it also in the first place. Thank you very much for the clarification.
