Venmo: @Sam-August-1 for tips. Thank you! I lost all my gigs due to the Coronavirus outbreak, so this is much appreciated. Feel free to request songs.
"Green Grass and High Tides" by the southern rock gods THE OUTLAWS. I learned the entire song by ear, so I have no tabs. Since there are two lead guitars in the song, I do my best to play what is foremost and distinguishable during the song. But anyway the Outlaws are an awesome band and they have way more stuff than just this epic. Hats off to Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones.
also I'm in school here which explains the goofy shirt. Feel free to check out my other videos too. I'm 18.
14 years later and this dude is still not getting the recongnition he deserved for putting his time into this amazing cover?
Hell man they only recently even made a tutorial for this song.
God how I miss when my dad would play this for me on his guitar. RIP dad I love you. I'll see you again one day and you can play for me then......
RIP
@@greggreen5337 thank you
how is that possible if he died?
@@SuperMikeFender before he died genius
I can air guitar the shit out of the song. It's truly stunning...
Oh yeah? Well i can PLASTIC Guitar this song really well!
I gave up I'm selling my air guitar really cheap if you want to buy one
All the hours you spent practicing guitar has paid off, you are AWESOME!!!
Thank you for taking the time to show us folks, how we too can play this song, if we pay attention to your instruction and practice, practice, Practice!
May God continue to bless you friend,
As I lift my glass....SALUTE!!!
thanks a lot man. playin since i was 12 so about 6 years. never really taken lessons or anything though.
Still impressing ppl 14 years later bud! I think those of us who can’t play a note are jealous that you can play and get to play this song. Great job!!!!!
Loved how he nailed that Billy Jones' solo. Hughies, too.
How i the FUCK could there be ANY thumbs down on this.....AWESOME JOB!!
Haters are gonna hate ;)
I mean, there's a bit too much distortion, but thats 100% excusable
That was my first thought when I looked down at the count.
Because it's actually not that good of a cover.
I don't even think he missed one note.
You killed it man. I love this song.
I like to imagine that he found an old guitar in his office's supply closet, picked it up after decades of not playing and suddenly started jamming out as the memories came back to him.
That would be awesome.
Yeah that would really be awesome. Especially since he's now 18.
TheScreamingBeagle that's an impressive beard for the 11 year old in this video
Erik Perkins I mean he was 18 when recording this (according to his own words). :D
TheScreamingBeagle haha I knew what you meant man
That was like an explosion of awesomeness to my ears... you sir are one amazing person
My God! 3 years later and I still haven't found anything better than this.
You are the only one I have seen play this song right except one friend thirty years ago. You are gifted. Thank you!!
That was absolutely mental!! Sick cover, my deepest respect brother.
Great job Sam. That looked hard as hell.
It says 15 years ago, but stuff like this is timeless! Well done!
Yes, we salute you! I have never seen anyone try to attempt playing the 2 distinct styles that make up the solos in this song. You got the whole country gentleman double-stop thing in the first solo and the crazy rattlesnake twang especially at the end. Still blown away from seeing it. Dude!
g
I've seen many of your videos now because, ostensibly, our tastes in music are the same. I envy your talent. I might, that is, might, be able to break down the song but I could never play it as smoothly and error free as you do. I stumbled into That Smell, then Freeborn Man, and now this. Keep up the nice work.
You have a hell of a lot more patience than me my brother! Bravo, great job! Great classic Southern rock song!
Certified UA-cam classic.
I played this song back in 1989 , for my dad's birthday party...this song is so old...brings back memories...
Yea pretty fantastic work there man. I've been playing a long time and this one has always hung over my head. Just a casual player but there is sure a lot of great stuff to learn in this one song. Sam I hate to ask but is there anyway to break this apart and teach a lesson on it? I'd sure love to see how he does the modal moves and pedal tones. Ultimately... you sir are the man! For those about to rock.... we salute you.
Same here. I've had to come back to this vid a few times as my skills have grown slower than peyote buttons. At first I couldn't even grasp what was happening with the rhythm fills. Every few years I'll add something else to the tool bag and watch this again to get another step closer. Pretty crazy it's been 10 years and this is still the only real cover of this on UA-cam. Trying to put together a version as one guy playing the best parts of several rock legends is no easy task for us weekend warriors! lol
DAMN RIGHT BRO GREAT JOB
Slow down the video
And pull up the tabs
For an 11 years video, that was good.
Dude. Nailed the whole tune in one take. Unreal.
Nice job mate, damn good choice of song too!
thanks. it's a fender strat mexican. i think it cost like 580. my amp is a 50w marshall.
In my old days some of the bands I would go see at bars would play this song I was thinking about learning the song but after watching you play it I dont know if Im young enough to learn it lol
I have this exact same model and color Mexican strat. Pretty wild hearing the same tone from your video. Like hearing an old friend. Thanks for sharing and thanks for shredding.
Most people have no clue, of what an excellent job you just did. Thank you very much
Sweet Jesus that was incredible. Very well played, plenty of emotion and feeling in how it was done. If I was wearing a hat, I'd take it off to you sir :)
Dude - that was fantastic! I had the honor of seeing Hughie 2x front row in '05 and '07, and this song has always been what I considered - THE greatest guitar song of all time. It just flows so sweetly from beginning to end. You do this song major justice! Thanks for posting.
WOW!!! Fantastic job! You must have put a lot of time and effort in on this one. But now you have something to be proud of. I've always loved this song. It has special meaning for me. Long live the memory of Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones! Long live The Outlaws!
Holy shit. This song is so hard. You fucking nailed it.
Legendary.
holy crap i can barely get through this song on rockband and here you're playing it like you made the freaking song
you are truly an angel from heaven sent here to rock
One of my all time favorite guitar riff's.....done to perfection! Well done and thanks for posting this. Look forward to seeing more.
Sure, you can play it on a real guitar, but can you do it in Rock Band? ;)
A one-man Guitar Army. Congrats!
@@1957user it was a joke dude.
I have been covering Henry Paul material since the 70s including "Song in The Breeze", "Green Grass", "Grey Ghost" and "So Long" and you did a GREAT job! Keep up the good work...
Except that aint Henry Paul Material That's all Huey and Billy R.I.P., He was just vagely in the background..He tries to claim its his though .Have you heard him try to sing some of these originals...PITIFULL!!!
Henry wrote none of those, thats all Hughie RIP
You know what us redneck southern rockers in Jacksonville say ? Who the funk is Henry Paul ? We know Hughie , we know Billy. But Henry , oh yea I think I remember him. That Yankee guy Hughie kicked out. Yea, yea that Blackbird guy. We don't talk bout that guy. Like we don't talk bout Bobby Hatchet. Remember that when your guzzling Wild Turkey with the redneck Boyz in Freakville. You don't want one of em knock your teeth out ! ha ha ha
Somewhere just beyond, the kings and queens bow and play just for you. Bravo!
I'm 54 and this has been my favorite song ever. Didn't think anyone could do it right but you rock....you are by far the best I have ever seen. Get out there and show your stuff, please!!!
and I'm still burning my guitar
totally boss! I'm going to burn my guitar now. thanks!
+Michael Johnson and I just started guitar class in college :(
I took the ashes of my Stratocaster to the Mississippi River....this RULZ!!!!!!
big time, LARGE props young man. Not only are you a helluva guitar player, but your song selection is wise beyond your years. ain't nothing being put out now that has the guts that some of these songs you are playing have. well done.
Holy Crap..that was INCREDIBLE!!!
Brings back many ole memories..
YOU ROCK..loved it!
Thank you
Puta madre, en rockband solo llegaba a 60% en expert, en guitara real solo a 1m pero siempre quise sacarla completa que recuerdos xD, u're fuckin awesome dude
I just had an outer body experience
Me too
Friend of mine just told me about your vids. I'm blown away man! You are unreal! I'm an oldie and have seen The Outlaws live two times back in the day and you do them justice for sure! All the best!
Hughie Thomasson would be sure proud & happy to hear ya play that song the way you did. you knocked it out of the park son keep swinging that axe!
I appreciate that Sam does a great version of this classic guitar battle song but you must remember this video had the advantage of being advertised under [Graybeard' 1952] promo of The Outlaws, Green Grass And High Tide seen to the right for many years along with another video. Graybeard has now almost 7 million views. so as you can see he got a lot of exposure for people interested in this song. Google bought out You Tube and eventually took down Sam's (Augie's) cover but by then he had a running start which snowballed on it's own. As well I'm glad he had that opportunity but the count would be no where near 300,000 views had this not happened. Just saying!
+Dan Newson So what? It could have only 1 view and that wouldn't diminish the fantastic job he did here in any way shape or form. But it was good of you to add your thinly veiled negativity. Just saying!
Your right but then again an unfair head start is a disqualification in a real race.
Who is racing? I wasn't aware of any competition. All I know is that kid kicked some ass on a song that I have been trying to master for over 30 years. I've got nothing on the kid, but being that I am not very competitive, I couldn't give a shit. So that leaves me free to just enjoy it.
you nailed it !!!!great job!!!!what buttheads would give this a thumbs down????jeeeeez
Joe Satch 74 people suck at playing guitar lol
Very few people have attempted to cover this entire song and so far this is the best I've seen/heard. Excellent job, I found this song on Rock Band and was impressed by the guitar.
I"ve watched this about 15 times or so and it's just as good as the first . Simply awesome
what a amazing cover dude. love the track, its a completely insane cover-job. best cover i ever heard
Wow. That was epic. Love your interpretations and how you kept it your own while still remaining true to the original piece and hitting all the familiar spots. Great vid, man.
great job. i rly like this. I had a teacher once that told me "playing by ear is a crutch and you should be able to read music all the time" but I think playing by ear is a gift.
AMAZING!! may I bow to you sir! I could hear the outlaws and also Sam August in that very very respectful rendition. ROCK ON!! From Costa Rica
I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Green Grass and High Tides was the best Southern Rock song ever, and I watched The Outlaws play it more than a few times. I could of sworn it was them playing when I listened to you. I hope to god your still playing the guitar!
You RAWK one of my all time favorite tunes. Take that gift and go play, anywhere, often. Great job!
wow spot on , great work on this classic ! thanks for sharing
That's some of the finest playing I've seen! Thanks. :)
Well done! Godspeed Hughie!
One of my all time favourite songs. Amazing fretwork, keep it up
I don't think I'll be able to say enough good things about this. You absolutely nailed it bud! Keep on rockin'!
You are a fantastic guitarist. It is good to see young musicians playing classics such as Green Grass... Hughie is smiling down on you.
damn. this is probably the most impressive display of skill and dedication i have ever seen. i applaud you sir!
This guy has the most typical 07-08 white guy apparel on lol! Great playing love it! Saw them live in Cincinnati about a month ago and it was incredible as ever!! Love and hate that people just know this song from rock band!! Southern rock will never die!
Awesome job man !!! You worked your ass off and it shows !! Very impressive !!
Wow - incredible picking on a great song! Fantastic!
That was very entertaining to watch you do what 3 guitarists accomplished in that jam. Well done indeed. Loved it👍👍
You are honestly amazing, God blessed you with a great gift!
I started learning this song a while back but i gave up because of its difficulty. You are making me go back just by showing us your skills.
Thank you!
just amazing!!
and your chorus sounds extremely nice!!!
that was AWESOME! im speechless!! perfect cover!!
Wow! That was really impressive! I stared closely through the whole song, and wow!...nearly flawless. Well done.
Wow, just wow. That was sick to watch! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing you perfected it
Hughie & Billy Are Smiling 🎸🎸🎸
Nice job man. I've always loved that song. Seen the Outlaws at least a dozen times. You've inspired me to pull out my old Gibson Explorer I haven't played in years and try to figure out the song from watching you play it. I know I spent countless hours trying to learn the whole thing by ear 30 or so years ago.
MY FACE IS MELTING!!! AHHHH u rock to hard u done gone and melted my face!! keep it up!
Wow! Thanks my favorite song from my favorite album!
what a job Sam, that's tuff guitarwork !
Very seldom do I comment on a video but your playing is worth it. Very well done! Green garss and high tides is one of the best "rock it out" songs ever and you nailed it.
My eyes were closed, and now they are awake. Bravo!
That was so sick. BRAVO.
Absolutely shredded it!
Man your left hand moves around that guitar neck like a big ol tarantula!! That is mind boggling!! F__kin aye that is cool!

You have made Hughie proud...great job man...
Just stumbled on this. Outstanding!!!
Best cover of my all time favorite song I have ever heard. I saw them play this in ‘76 when they backed up Lynyrd Skynyrd. Been my fav song ever since. Wonderful cover. Thank you !!!
Very nice job man! This song is a monster...you got your monster on! 😎
An excellent and impressive job! Hats off to you.
Holy CRAP!!!
That was pretty much AMAZING!!!
Nailed it !!!! Well done.
you done did justice to Hughie and Billy, this is an all time favorite song first heard the Outlaws on 8 track in the seventies rock on man!
Wow, awesome playing! I really enjoyed watching this. You have magic fingers.
I've always loved this song, the guitar is very expressive. Well done!
That is just a straight up feat. That was 15 years ago. A part of me hopes that he's living like a legend abroad these days, spreading classic southern rock in France, or something. And definitely not working at Walmart, or something.
Unless he just plain wants to work and lay low. In which case, I'm happy for him if he is.
All I Can Say is..Wow...Awesome Playing!!!
