I built myself a city of skyscrapers galore on the Timbuktu region. I modified the region to fill up more water with land and add more cities using that paint trick you showed. Population 44 million. I miss sim city 4. Haven’t played it ages! I still have my city saved somewhere too. The region files and the plugins for all the extra buildings. I should reload my region one day and play it again. Just to see it once more.
@rhyThmaTik Thank you so much for this video! Let me ask you a question: Do you know how to transform a real map into a grayscale map (like this one in the 4:18 minutes of this video)? For example: The map of the great Los Angeles - that has lots of nieghborhoods in hills like Hollywood Hills, and etc.... - I know that this region is available to download in Simtropolis, but how to transform it into a grayscale JPG map that will be accepted to make regions, by the game algorithm (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + R)?
I don't know if this is useful but exists a type of maps called "Digital Elevation Models" that can represent in a grey scale the elevations to be read by Geographic Information Systems softwares like QGIS, Global Mapper, ArcGIS, etc. In my country the government offers DEM maps for free. Maybe your country offer that maps too. If anyone knows an easier method to make real life maps to be read by SC4 please share the knowledge :)

I found this link ( gisgeography.com/srtm-shuttle-radar-topography-mission/ ) that has a guide of how to download data from the USGS Earth Explorer (one of the Free Global DEM Datasources: gisgeography.com/free-global-dem-data-sources/ ). When I get free time, I will try to download it and put in SimCity like @rhyThmaTik did in this video! Thank you!

Same... doesn't render anything... the big squares worked instantly... but the map itself doesn't render after pressing "ctrl shft alt R" en loading the map... (i couldn't select "this pc" only got to choose from my harddrive "C" "D" ect...) so i did change the location off the JPEG file (took a copy to be precise and left the original with the config file) before loading in... Could that be the reason?
I've been trying to get this sorted for way too long (how long has the game been out) my issue the last 3 or 4 months? No where else have I heard that it takes forever to load. I've been impatient. Regional should be loading. I'm now going to walk away
Thank you for the guide. However when I render the region everything is inverted, the dark parts are high and the light parts are low. What am I doing wrong? :(

not sure if you'll respond to this but whenever i try to open the grayscale jpeg file to make the terrain look it should, it like works like its supposed to and loads everything but it then crashes in the middle of doing that. not sure if i did anything wrong or whats happening
Try moving your plugins to a different folder before you load SimCity and render the region. Sometimes your mods (especially terrain-based ones) will conflict with the rendering process. After your region is rendered, you can close SimCity, move your plugins back into the SimCity folder, then reboot the game. Otherwise, your computer may just be low on RAM and needs to have some extra data storage space.
@@rhythmatik so that worked to getting my terrain to look like it should but now its not letting me open any of the city tiles. when i try to open the game it says "runtime error" any suggestions on this one?
I'm guessing you already closed out the game, put your plugins back in, and then re-started the game right? If that didn't work, try loading another region and opening a city there, then load your new region back up and try opening a city. Other than that, maybe your computer just needs a quick reboot.
Yeah terrain was good so I closed it and put the plugins back in my sim city folder then went back into the game where it says “runtime error” once I click play. I can either ignore or retry it and both just load the game up and into the region. But when I tried to open a tile, it went to loading it then just crashes. It crashes with all my regions so it’s not the specific region I just created
Never seen that happen before. When you removed your plugins, did you accidentally delete one when trying to move it back? Check your recycling bin and to also make sure none of the operating files were trashed.

I'm getting the same thing and I have no idea what the fuck is going on.
At the end when trying to render, I open the jpeg with the ctrl/shift/alt/r and open the jpeg.....nothing happens.

The file that I got from Simtropolis doesn't have any greyscale jpeg image. How do I configure the custom map?
It might require SC4 Mapper.
how to transform a real map into this gray map? downloading it from sim site you are just copying it... how to make one ?
You have to make sure the image is saved as a 16 bit greyscale image. There are online image converters that can make these.
