  • Instructions for getting the x350pro quad in the air for the first flight.
    A basic walk-through of the steps to get the x350pro safely in the air for the first time.
    This process applies to most multirotor first flights. if you are getting your first multirotor, this is a good video to watch a couple of times.
    The important parts here is I am demonstrating how to check the correct operations of your pitch-roll control live before going flying, this should avoid unfortunate sideways movement once the quad take-off.
    After Takeoff, go easy on the sticks and let the walkera x350pro hover in place for a little until you know for sure you have positive control of the aircraft.
    For the first couple of flights, its easier to fly without the brushless gimbal, if you have a rough landing there is no point in risking damage to your brushless gimbal or GoPro camera. besides the quad flies easier with less load.
    You may want to watch my x350pro build video first, as that video go over the steps required before the first flight.

    Excellent short video ! I learned many thigs to do before taking off...At home i have many maples and a crash is very possible for a maiden flight... Bo you are a excellent teacher for a beginning like me.I'm so exited to take areal videos around my house and at the campground during my vacations. My QR X350 PRO will arrive in 2-3 weeks...

    @110570190335649752012 Appreciate your videos. Could not ask for anything better. I have the Old X350. Have had it for a long time and have not ever flown it. I had a botched back surgery so I have not been able to really fly it. I tried today, but could not get my X350 to work. The video shows (came with a 720p Camera at the time) in the screen, so that works. The blades moved a little like they were suppose too.
    I'll explain a bit more soon, sorry. Have to go...
    It is working great now!! Thanks for your help.

    Great video - I'm waiting for my Walkera x350 pro ($400 basic with Devo 7 no gimble) to arrive soon. I've been practicing on a Syma X5C and am very good at it - I know this is another beast and it's like comparing apples to oranges but it's good to learn on a $50 quad verses $400 - I tried the $400 SkyView FreeX and it was a disaster - would not fly right so I gave up on it. Thanks for the video.

      You are welcome, thank you for the kind words.
      Sounds like you have been doing all the right things, flying and practicing on a smaller quad first give you lots of muscle memory to help build confident flying skills. Good luck with it..

      I have been flying the Walkera qrx350 pro and on the stock battery (without the camera/gimble) and I am only getting 12-13 min of flight time is this normal? I only have the stock battery and the included charger (takes forever 6+ hours to fully charge) do you have any recommendations for spare batteries and a good charger?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  9 років тому

      Andy Z 12-13 minutes is about right with camera if you have a bit of wind.
      Maybe get the TALI charger, its cheap at $35, you will also need the power brick, it can charge your batteries at 2amp, and should finish in about 30 minutes.

    Nice Video, yet again very informative, easy to follow and entertaining. I missed your sneaky mountain dew product placement though (-; ha ha. Oh and I see they didn't fix that flimsy latch that always pops open, thats a shame. I have ordered the Pro body, landing gear and hardware to swap all my electronics from my normal QRX into that shell, just so I can use a bigger battery and get more flight time. Should be here this week. Do you think I will need the Pro props because of the extra weight, or do you think the standard props will be ok. Thanks mate.

      Hey Jax, Sorry, the Mountain Dew sponsor ship check bounced.. nah.. it was 8pm and caffeine seemed like a bad idea. ha ha.
      LOL. I KNEW I should have reshot that landing, The 9inch props are very well made, I would recommend them. not so much for the extra weight but because the thing seem to fly very nice with them, try a pair and see how it goes, check the motors for heat after landing to make sure you are not melting anything as well. ;-)

      Awesome. glad you are getting it flying.
      Make sure to let it sit extra long to get a GREAT GPS lock after this long time, I would easily let it sit 5-10 minutes the first time.. just let it get as many GPS's as possible. and always with that flight-controller, let it sit at least 3 minutes after turning it on outside ;-)

    • @freddiestewart9233
      @freddiestewart9233 8 років тому

      I have a question Bo. How do you get the camera to not tilt from one side to the other how do you make it sit horizontal in the gimba?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      the camera should be leveled once the aircraft it turned on. the only gimbal control is pitch (up down)

    • @freddiestewart9233
      @freddiestewart9233 8 років тому

      ok i did not know if you are supposed to have it perfectly horizontal when powered off.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      its good to have a perfect horizon when powered off, you may want to tape a penny on the side thats too light ;-) a perfectly balanced gimbal helps the camera work easier.

    Hi Bo,
    Really liking the videos. I am just wondering if you can take of in GPS mode as I find the quad to move quite a bit which despites it purpose for me which is aerial filming.
    Chris.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Hey Chris, Technically speaking you can take off in GPS, I have not tried it, and don't really think I recommend it, mostly because I hate to let the GPS do the driving when taking-off. The process is simple, arm the quad in manual, then flip to GPS mode and push the throttle up fairly quickly to about 70% throttle, once in the air, reduce throttle to 50% for a hover. again, I REALLY do not particularly like that feature, and you will also see me say the same about the h500 TALI auto-take-off.. I DO NOT LIKE auto-take-off.. its like cat-nip for noobs. smells so good and make them crazy and next thing they crash. IF you must use it, wait wait wait, give it maybe 2-3 minutes after you already have a great GPS lock, make sure its good, because the GPS is in the drivers seat and if you have a problem the quad can go sideways and crash faster than you can say auto-launch.. ;-) just saying.

    Hi Bo! Do you have any tips on how to balance propellers without any fancy equipment?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  9 років тому

      Hello Flavionator, A Dubro balancer is brilliant.. get one.!
      Until then, get a 3mm about 1/8th thick steel rod from your local hardware store. about 15-20cm long. wrap clear scotch tape around the end, until a pro stick just enough to not fall off. ;-)
      Then proceed to put the stick on the edge of a water glass with a smooth edge. simply lay the stick across the glass, check first, the glass must be level and the stick should not roll with no propeller in place. glass must be tall enough for the prop to move freely.

    Great video Bo, thanks for all the instruction. You took off in manual mode but landed in GPS mode, for beginners is it possible to take off in GPS mode?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Wally Jas, Technically speaking, but I don't recommend it, because the x350pro GPS is a little rough first time out and you then can't do the rocker-test first to make sure the thing is neutral before getting in the air. ;-)

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      OK yes, the process is simple, arm the quad with mix switch in manual, after arming and do the rocker test.. put throttle to bottom wait for motors to stop.
      Then move mix switch to "0" for GPS mode, then move the throttle stick to about 75% and it will take off.. return throttle to 50% for GPS hold. proceed and fly from there.

      Bo Lorentzen DJI Phantom with centered throttle made life so much easier for sure at least for new comers to this hobby. So Bo if we have Phantom's TX and a compatible RX on Walkera Pro, will it help more with TXs centered throttle to hover in GPS mode? The question is also like asking ''How APM behaves in GPS mode with centered throttle as Wlakera has an APM based FC''? Thanks for your videos..

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Gur Isler Yeah, now that everybody is starting to be flying GPS, the spring centered throttle stick makes sense, and the logic is simple, up to move up, down to move down.. and that is exactly how the APM behave, yes it is a APM controller in the x350pro. there is nothing keeping you from cracking the tx box open and putting a spring on the throttle stick as well. ;-)
      You could definitely also fly a x350pro with a Phantom radio / rx, but remember there are no options for customizing the radio, so it may not be worth the time.

      Bo thanks for quick reply. Just will build a custom 350 pro by buying spare parts and some abit better motor and escs and apm 2.6, just want to continue using my Phantoms Tx with this new build by adding a Fasst rx into custom 350 pro, just I was curious how APM will behave to stick centered throttle when I arm the apm! Dont have so much experience with APM but as you mentioned it should be OK! Later thinking on investing a better TX like Devo10 or Tarantis! Thanks for helping! Following fpvguy.com :)

    Hi Bo, you certainly remember our discussion about my problems with the GPS device out of the box of my new QR X 350 Pro. Now I built in a new replacement GPS. Now I have a positive GPS Status LED indication (after some minutes at a new position). The GPS Position mode seems not so good as with an original APM with a ublox GPS receiver. With some mild wind there are drifts of a few meters 3...5m horizontally and vertically i.e. height. You mention in your Video some "learning" phase which results in a better (smother) behaviour of the quad. Can you explain a little this "learning" phase?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Hey Jack, the "learning phase" is really simple, my x350pro flew pretty much as you explained just now the first day, however after running maybe 5 batteries through it, it seems to have refined its position hold and also its ability to lock to a position. I had a bit of wind in this video yet not much trouble with position hold, this is after maybe 10 batteries on the quad. so basically, simply keep flying some batteries through the quad.. you should see a marked improvement. ;-)

    • @jackbosshard4502
      @jackbosshard4502 10 років тому

      Hi Bo,
      Thanks for your explanation!I meant the question, if you have an idea, how this behaviour is realised. Up to now, I have never seen in the forum for the arducopter i.e. APM Mega hints for such an adaptive behaviour. Maybe that Walkera has programmed such a fine feature for their APM Mega.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Jack, I am as puzzled as you are, got no clue how its working, and if you told me it worked that way, I would laugh and say you were smoking something.. all I know, when I powered the quad out of the box.. it was rough (putting it politely) and after some batteries its very stable and predictable. Matt mentioned something about how it works a while back, but its way over my head. check out his FB forum facebook.com/groups/711455455567160/

    Hi Bo, firstly thanks for your videos! it has made my quad experience out of the box far less daunting!! one thing I notice on my X350 Pro is that following compass calibration ect the quad always wants to fly t o the left and slightly backwards. First I tried to adjust the trim buttons but this doesn't seem to have any effect, I then switched propellers just in case one side was biased...still the same. when I enter into GPS hold it then straightens up!! any ideas?
    thanks again

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  9 років тому

      Neil, if the GPS hold mode does the trick. then Im guessing its a little uneven load.. generally in manual these things tend to drift. how fast is it going?

    • @mauineil1
      @mauineil1 9 років тому

      thanks Bo, if I take my fingers off the right stick it drifts back and to the left fairly quickly about 1m per second. it has no gimbal or camera, I took these off until I figures out how to fly it.

      +projectpulstar Get a Q500 from Yuneec or a Phantom P3 standard,

    Morning, Bo. David from Austin, Tx. here. I have a QRX350 Pro that I am learning to fly. Wondered if I might ask a question of you? .....I can fly it pretty well in manual now, but the last two times out it seems to have gone out of control after maybe 10 min flying. Wound up crashing pretty bad last night....it started off in one direction and I had to chop throttle and crash rather than losing altogether. I crashed once before and had to replace gear and the original compass unit, but have done the calibration as directed by you and Walkera. Have good satellites here...I get 5 or 6 lights on the right LED, but am not flying in GPS hold mode. Suggestions? Hate to ask, but are there any beginner videos on your channel that I should watch and practice? Batteries are fresh and fully charged. No beeps for low volt heard. I have Mission Planner, should I lower the voltage threshold as shown in another Walkera video? Thanks for the help, David

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +1

      Hey David,
      You can lower the voltage threshold, but make sure you don't try to fly on low voltage as the quad will get kinda sluggish.
      The sudden taking off sounds suspect, it should not do that. the flight controller in these are a bit sensitive, the big issue is to turn it on in the position you want to fly from, leave it there for 3-5 minutes to make sure you have good GPS before you fly. do not pick it up or move it after turning it on, leave it in place and fly from where you turned it on. if you have to move it, you need to start from scratch.. thats a APM general issue.

      +Bo Lorentzen Bo, I have the Devo F7. Can I set a timer or is there one built in to let me know time limit or range? Thx.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      Timers are kinda useless. instead buy a lipo-allarm, and plug it in, set it to 3.7v *you do that by pushing the one button until it lights up 3.7v. done.
      THAT will start buzzing when the battery reach actual power 3.7v and that give you 2-3 safe minutes to land.

    Bo I see you are using a F7 Devo, do you know how to set up the sub trims in the menu? I have no idea what the menu items are or if they work. I was trying to correct a pitch problem on the 350pro as it was pitching forward when it takes off. I tried using the trimmers but nothing seems to work.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Benard,
      Yes they do work, walkera makes surprisingly good radios. but the sub-trims are not going to change the issue if you can't trim it away. ;-)
      Sounds like you need to revisit the IMU calibration, for some reason walkera call it compass calibration. also make sure you are on perfectly level ground when taking off.
      AND make sure the quad is correctly balanced.
      Notice how I check the balance as i spin-up, at a little less than flight power, I check that the quad is level. then rock the pitch and roll stick all directions to see that the quad moves with the stick. when I center the stick the quad centers towards level.. so that is OK.. then as I power up more I use the stick to keep it level during take-off.

    • @benardquek
      @benardquek 10 років тому

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому +1

      Hey Camilo, That is correct, stick to be 50% when you change modes, after you have changed to GPS, you can fly the quad up-down height with the throttle and forward like normally. REMEMBER to center the throttle stick before switching back to manual from GPS. ALSO REMEMBER if you are flying in RTL and switch back to GPS or MANUAL.. you must be sure to center the throttle stick first.

    Hey Bo,
    I have the exact same set up as yours. However, on my first flight, the quad would not lift off straight up in neutral position. Instead the quad's pitch sends it to the back right. Is there anything that I could do to fix this issue?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Hey Tony, make sure you leave the quad on the ground when you power it, should be perfectly level, leave it sitting for at least 30sec after binding.. preferably longer, just leave it until you have solid GPS lock, then wait a couple of minutes further to make sure its really good.
      OH..also check that your trim is centered on the right stick.. push the trim tab until pitch and roll is definitely centered. ;-)
      if that don't do the trick, next stop is recalibrating the IMU, but you should not need that.

    • @itstonyyu
      @itstonyyu 10 років тому

      Bo Lorentzen
      Thanks for the quick response!
      I just tried to recalibrate the compass and now it's pitching to the left. Using the trim can minimize the drift but not enough to stabilize.
      Tried using the gps lock with 7 gps satellite locks but it still doesn't lock in place?
      Is there anything else I could be trying?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      Tony, Im guessing you have not had a lot of flights.
      As you start up, make sure it start and sit on level ground while warming up. after you get full GPS lock, wait at least 60 seconds before you start flying.
      Then proceed and fly while keeping it stable in the air using the sticks, do not go to high, the point is not to fly anywhere just to train the flight-controller, get 4-5 batteries, I suspect that will iron the balance out. mine was the same way on the first battery.. but straightened up after a lot of flying. I have no idea why it works that way.

    Bo, I hope You can help me out here! I bought the Walkera, X350 Pro. I put a flysky receiver in it. And, I am using a turnigy 9X transmitter. I am trying to use what I have available, just to get this off the ground. I'm hoping i haven't burned something out, doing so. I have a 2600 mAh battery, 14.8v. It sparked pretty good when I plugged it in. The quad did it's beeping thing. The blinking, left hand light....won't stop blinking. I decided to grab a 2200mAh, 11.1v battery. ( Thinking and wishing I had grabbed this one first ) Plugged in with just a hint of a spark. Two or three different beeps. But, the light still doesn't go out! I have tried turning on the transmitter. Doesn't make a difference. Any thoughts as to what I should try? Do You, think I may have burned something out, using 14.8v battery? I have a devo receiver, in the mail, on it's way to me. But, have no idea if it will bind with my Turnigy transmitter. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank You!! Tom

      honestly I have never messed with changing the RX in a 350pro, so I'm not really a good resource, shoot a quick email to Walkera, DONT mention the rebuild, just simply tell them its always blinking the left light. see what they have to say.
      Sorry Im not more helpful, unfortunately I dont have a 350 anymore, dont have any reference material on this one left.

    Hi, Bo,
    I'm Alan and I'm writing from France. And you, what place do you live?
    Thank you for this nice video. Instructive for a beginner like me. Last week, I asked you a tip for a camera iLook. But you told me there was no iLook appli for my tablet. Okay.
    Today I still come to ask for help. I made ten flights with my QRX 350 Pro and I am very happy. But today I can not do the calibration of the compass. When I bring the two sticks to the inside, the LED remains off left and I cannot calibrate. So I assumed that I could not fly "hold on" either and I did not steal before finding a solution.
    But on the video, you do not calibrate the compass before you start and you still flew "hold on". Then I can also fly without a compass?
    I opened the quadkopter but all electrical wire are connected normally.
    I disconnected and reconnected the compass, but nothing operates the flashing green LED for compensation.
    Maybe I have to reprogram the radio Devo7 for ordering compensation. Do you have a video that explains the procedure?
    Thank you for your response.
    Alain :)

      Hello Alain,
      You only need to do compass calibration one time, unless you travel very far from where you live.
      Not sure why you can't do the compass calibrate, thats a bit odd, I would do a quick flight in manual and if thats cool, then I would be comfortable flying GPS with it.
      You may want to ask the calibration question on the Facebook group here.

      Hey Rob, CORRECT, if you travel more than a couple hundred k's then YES you should recalibrate the compass

    So i hope someone can help here. I have been trying to fly my quad. I tried it yesterday and it flipped over and i stopped. I tried it today again with no luck. But while i was trying i hit the gear switch and i believed it was in 2 and my quad took off. Does anyone know here if thats what i supposed to do or have the gear switch on closer to me? Thanks in advance.

      +amin momin when you start flying ALL switches should be pushed UP and away. (kinda like in the video)
      took off and crashed? or did it start flying ?

      +Bo Lorentzen hi bo. The first time it just flipped over. The second time with the gear switch all the way towards me, it took off.

      You said that in the first post. maybe don't flip the gear switch towards you?

      +Bo Lorentzen hi sorry for the confusion. When i tried the first the gear switch was away from me and it flipped upside down. When i tried it with the switch being close to me it flew the quad took off. So the question is can i fly my quad with gear switch being close to me?

    Bo, why didn't you turn the radio on first?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  10 років тому

      I find - in my experience with the walkera products - I always power the quad and then right after power the radio. read me right here, I would NEVER turn on my s800 until after the radio is on and ready. it just seems to work better with the automatic binding of the walkera things. but I think the correct process probably is radio, then quickly the quad.

      Thanks Bo. On DJI it gets tricky, especially when you land and turn the radio off, it suddenly takes off.
      So I guess your next video will be flying H500? :-)

      Ben Hayat Yes NEVER turn off a radio until after you unplug the quad battery.!

      Hi Bo, I like your good introductory Videos for the Walkera QR X350 Pro! I just received my new one from RCMaster. But concerning the GPS I have a great problem, The GPS Status LED blinks only very rarely (can be minutes) and only under very clear sky and sunny conditions. (In These places the original APM Mega with a ublox GPS has never problems! After warming up the upper part of the quad the GPS LED stops to blink! It also stops if I put my Hand over the quad in a distance of a few centimeters. I opend the quad and controlled all GPS Connections (all ok). In the Mission planner I realized that the sat counts are rarely at 7...8 and sudden drops to Zero and comes up eventually after a long while. In the (quad)opened case, the situation seems a little bit better. I conclude that the Receiver sensitivity of the GPS is quite bad and even worther with higher temperatures. Did you also observe this behaviour? As RCmaster responds very lazy to my corresponding Inputs I ordered a new original Walkera GPS (Version 2) replacement in the hope ....
      Regards
      Jack
