  • The full version of Barbara Allen from the album, "The Songcatcher". This is a compilation album of various artists and is one of the strongest soundtracks I have heard. Enjoy!

As a young child my grandmother would sing this song to me. Listening to it today brought back great memories. I will be turning 65 in about a week and I was 5 ,or 6 years old when I heard it last,?

We played this at my Grandpa's funeral. My grandparents loved Songcatcher and all of the versions of the songs on the soundtrack. His name is William and my Grandma's name is Barbara. He really was a Sweet William.
    Miss you forever Grandpa.

@debro52 Her version is exquisite. I listen to it over and over. I love the movie also. My mom & aunts made it a movie night & came over to watch. (They grew up in the mtns.) They were so happy to see life as they remembered as very little children. Thank you for your comment. It is greatly appreciated and has lots of merit. The history of the mountains should never be forgotten. My best, Moppet (Barbara)

Her version is amazing. I love Emmylou and don't think I've heard anything by her that I don't really like A LOT. (Actually, she is on my Bucket List. I've never been able to see her and love her music!) Thank you for leaving your kind comment. I do enjoy hearing when people like something! My best to you, Moppet

This is so beautiful. I've heard of this song since I was young, but this is by far the prettiest I've ever heard it done. The movie "The Songcatcher" is very good too. People living in the Appalachain area should watch it because it tells of many of the old folk songs sung in the area.

MyMoppet52 I was born in Latin America and immigranted to Canada when I was quite young. Although, I am in the tourism industry, music is a huge part of my life; my neighbours and friends can destify to that. Good music has the power to transport you to this perfect place where love is all and somethings the feeling is so strong, that one feels like in the very presence of God.
Since I lost my father, 3 years ago, I wasn´t quite able to cry for him, since I can afford to fall apart. I´ve been working and spending some time in our beach house in Latin America to heal my soul from all the amazing friends, relatives I´ve lost in the past three and a half years. Yesterday, the sky was this deep blue, like today, I decided to listen to this song, and tears where running down my face, washing down my soul from
this deep sorrow that took over me. I guess the only thing to describe one´s pain is the poem of Victor Hugo called Tomorrow at Dawn.
I leave you with a quote from Shadowland movie when the brilliant Anthony Hopkins says: in this journey called life, one can´t have the happiness of yesterday without the pain of today. That´s the deal, that´s the price you pay for love.

I am from the same area. I had had an gentle argument with an uncle for years about how the music came from the old world...anyway, after the movie, he believed me. I grew up listening to the primitive versions of these songs and have them on utube in other videos. I think the music is called The Songcatcher II. Thank you for commenting. I appreciate it very much. It's also nice to meet a fellow mountain person. I'm transplanted but my roots go deep! My best to you, Barbara

@tosca411 Thank you, thank you, thank you. People do NOT hit "Like" around here. Utube started a new rating system on the icons when people pull up videos on the net. I had "liked" one video & it had lots of good comments but no other "Likes". Someone "disliked" so the song has a 50% "Like" ratio on utube. Not much of a good ad for some great music! Anyway, yes this is a lovely song. I am so glad you visited and found it. Please feel free to visit again and thanks for commenting AND "liking"!

Jack Warshaw I don't have it but wish I did. It was out of print when I tried to find it. This was only the second movie my mom would watch. She called her sisters over & they all watched several times. "Oh, Death" in the movie was the type singing they had grown up with. As I said, I was so disappointed with this 'gussied up' soundtrack, but grew to love it almost immediately. I love "The Songcatcher II" which has music that also isn't in the movie, but is authentic. I need to check & see if you have any performances posted. I love early William Elliott Whitmore for his music also. Incredible performer! My best to you, Barbara

@michael I think many of Allison Krauss, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, and Doc Watson's versions of traditional Appalachian songs are more true to original intent than many. Lots of bluegrass groups intentionally sing off-key or with odd vocal coloration, but many people in the mountains actually sang on-key and sang well.
One fine album I can recommend is "New Britain: The Roots of American Folksong." It has ancient French and German songs (Track 10) with the tune of Barbara Allen that might have predated even that lovely song. A slightly altered tune of Amazing Grace (track 21) is the version sung in old southern churches. Finally, a favorite tune is Red is the Rose, the Irish counterpart to Loch Lomond with the same tune.

+Samuel Lord Thank you for your info. I will check that album out. I love this soundtrack...NOW. When I first got it I was mad enough to spit nails. I felt ripped off. This was NOT the music in the movie. (my family grew up in that area and we can still hear the movie music when we visit). Anyway, this album has become a favorite of mine, but I was thrilled to find others were upset also. I've posted music from The Songcatcher II: Music that Inspired the Movie. Here is a song from that album. It is filled with original artists. This is Doc Watson a cappella ua-cam.com/video/DHnGXDNqQjE/v-deo.html

I agree with you entirely although I understand the actors only learnt the
part they needed for the film, it would be interesting to know what ended up
    on the cutting room floor.
I guess they thought it would not be commercial to use unknown singers.
Incidentally the film was not released in the UK and is only available as a zone 1release on cd , as it is of great interest the versions being much nearer to those taken to America by the original settlers.

When we sang Barbara Allen when I was young there was a first verse that went something like: In London town where I was born there was a fair maid dwelling and her name was Barbara Allen. Then the rest is pretty much the same.

      @MyMoppet52  9 років тому +1

Alex McGee Thank you so much for adding that. I've heard a few versions, but I can't remember that verse. I haven't heard it. Perhaps you are in Europe/England? I'm in the USA, & heard it in the mountains of Appalachia when I was small. I do enjoy following songs around. The House Carpenter is another one that has changed...just ONE example. Thanks again. Would love to know if you are in the States or not. If not, we didn't get all the verses when the song made it over here. Wishing you a wonderful weekend & a good time with friends and family, Moppet

My ancestors immigrated from Ireland to South Carolina in the late 1600s. They moved to Wolf Pit, NC, then walked (yes walked) to NW Florida in the early 1700s. They carried the songs and NC/Middle English Irish accents with them. Archaic words and phrases are still used in small pockets of Panhandle farm country. Have a lovely Easter, and thanks so much for the song.

Was in the merry month of May
When all gay flowers were a bloomin',
Sweet William on his death-bed lay
For the love of Barbara Allen.
He sent his servant to the town
To the place where she was dwelling
Said, "You must come to my master's house,
If your name be Barbara Allen."
So slowly, slowly she gets up,
    And to his bedside going
She drew the curtains to one side
And says, "Young man, you're dying."
"I know, I'm sick and very low,
    And sorrow dwells within me
No better, no better I never will be.
    Til I have Barbara Allen."
"Don't you remember last Saturday night
When I was at the tavern,
You gave your drinks to the ladies there
    But you slighted Barbara Allen?"
He reached up his pale white hands
    Intending for to touch her
She turned away from his bedside
And says, "Young man I won't have you."
He turned his cheek into the wall
    And bursted out a crying
"What I do to thee I do to all
And I do to Barbara Allen."
She had not walked and reached the town
She heard the death bells ringing
And as they rolled they seemed to say,
    "Hard-hearted Barbara Allen."
"Oh Mother, oh mother go make my bed
Make it both long and narrow
Sweet William died for me today
    I'll die for him tomorrow."
Sweet William was buried in the old church yard
    And Barbara there anigh him,
And out of his grave grew a red, red rose,
And out of hers, a briar.
They grew and grew to the old churchyard,
Where they couldn't grow no higher,
And there they tied in a true love's knot.
The rose wrapped around the briar.
