Riverside should be included with Los Angeles. Also, San Jose needs to be included with San Francisco and Oakland.

Talk to the US Census Bureau about it.

They're in the Combined statistical area. This is metropolitan statistical area.

Thanks for viewing! The Federal Office of Management and Budget designates and defines metropolitan areas .. i'm just the messenger🙂.. This data is strictly for MSA, not CSA .

@@TheSkylineKing yeah, I guess they'll keep NYC as the largest metro area in the country forever so long as the cut up other metro areas the way they do.

@@larsfladmark2482 how big would LA be if the metro areas were combined?

SF Bay Area includes Hayward, San Mateo, and San Jose.

Thanks for viewing.. Hayward and San Mateo are included already in the MSA. This data is for the MSA only; not the CSA (So San Jose , a separate msa , is not included). The US OBM recently change the name of the SF msa to the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA MSA , so hopefully that will make it more apparent to the casual observer that all of Alameda County is included.

Some of the metros are extremely massive in area compared to others. There needs to be a better standard of calculating metros that would better illustrate true sizes.

Thanks for viewing.. I think the same statement applies to city size as well

Bigger cities spread out to more area. Duh.

I disagree. It can get really sloppy doing that. For instance Phoenix Metro contains both Maricopa and Pinal County. That's 14,600 square miles. The actual urbanization is at least half if not less of that.

If Phoenix is doing a combination of Mesa and Chandler, why aren't Glendale, Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert, etc not being counted.

Thanks for viewing. The US Office of Budget and Management usually determines the name of the metropolitan areas. It's usually the primary city plus 2other large cities in the area. All of the cities you listed and about 18more are included in the Phoenix Metropolitan Statistical Area. Basically It's just impractical to say " The Phoenix Mesa Chandler Gilbert Glendale Scottsdale Peoria Tempe Surprise Goodyear Buckeye Avondale Queen Creek Apache Junction El Mirage Fountain Hills Paradise Valley Wickenburg Tolleson Youngstown Litchfield Park Guadalupe Cave Creek Care Free Gila Bend and unincorporated areas" Metropolitan Area
