Robin Antin has always given me toxic vibes. I'm not blaming her for Simone's death, but I think she created difficult work environment for those girls. Following closely PCD for many years I realised how much of a control freak she was, she always wanted things to go her way. After PCD reunion fiasco I realised that even more, because imo she's to blame for all of this drama. I guess it might have been similar for GRL.
@@Philipp19967 I think Robin screwed over PCD, because she wanted Melody to be the Lead instead of Nicole so she got revenge on her and the Label by messing them over.
It’s not robin it’s the label. Mostly every girl that’s been in her group still follows her. The only that seems to have a problem with robin is tiff since she was kicked out the group b/c she’s too “urban” & they wanted the group to go pop.
I just got into their music recently, VACATION and Ugly Heart were fucking bops! I don't understand how they didn't get bigger after that. I was sad when I heard about Simone's death. They even made a song dedicated to her.
Sadly I got into them after the death of Simone. Their song Lighthouse is beautiful and definitely my favourite from them too, the guitar in that song is amazing and also the synths and the violins! That song is a cinematic experience to me and it’s very relatable, we all have one friend that we could dedicate this to. I wish the Spotify version kept the intro of the UA-cam music video version because it was so melancholic and beautiful 🥺❤️
For those who don’t know, Simone Battle was also known for creating the gay anthem “He Likes Boys” and had been in pleanty of music videos and films such as “We The Party”. She was amazingly talented and beautiful and would have fitted so well into today’s music industry with the likes of Normani and Chloe X Halle. She had the potential to be a hugely successful solo artist and her group had the potential to be one of the biggest girl groups of all time. They had the talent, charisma and the girls all got along. It’s a shame the way things turned out because Simone Battle and the girls of G.R.L. Deserved better 💔💔💔
They would’ve been one of if not the biggest girlgroup of the 2010s. Their first ep was full of anthemic pop songs and feel good music. GRL circa 2014-15 served great music, music videos and amazing performances as well. Such a shame coz Simone was my favourite too. Rip Simone Battle ❤️❤️
We hoped so but there were already bad business decisions being made since their debut. They didn't release "Vacation" to radio until September, three months after it was released as download. They released the music video at the same time. Another mistake-that music video should've been shot and released in June to coincide with the end of the school year. Then, "Show Me What You Got" was released as a promotional single only, was never released to radio or as a commercial single even though the lyric video on UA-cam had millions of views. Then, Ugly Heart was only released in the U.S. when it should've been released in other countries too because it was charting internationally. How it got popular in Australia i don't know, bc idk if it was officially released there. THEN, their album was downgraded to an EP. A shame bc every song on the EP was a banger and it would've been fantastic to hear a 10 or 11-track album full of songs like that. Aside from "Wild Wild Love," they kind of were getting the short end of the stick right up until the "Ugly Heart" era; it's a shame Simone couldn't see it through.
Been a fan of them since the very beginning. I've been listening to their EP alot recently. They had the potential to be the best next girlgroup in the USA. The outfits, charisma, they could all dance and sing.. such a shame. RIP Simone
The group disbanded a few months later. Then the group got back together briefly in 2016 releasing two songs with two of the originals and one new girl. Then they kinda just disappeared a little. Now, just recently, in October of 2020 they announced they are coming back with the original members (Lauren, Natasha, Emmalyn, and Paula). Unfortunately a few weeks later, Paula left. Then months passed and still no update on them. And then Emmalyn got pregnant and now just recently gave birth to a beautiful daughter 😊💖
I read that Jazzy Mejia's half sister, Natalie was supposed to join the group originally, but got pregnant, After Simone died, Jazzy joined because Emmalyn and Paula refused to join. However, the group stopped making music. Part of me feels like they were traumatized after Simone and were only contractually obliged. According to a deleted tweet, the group was supposed to perform in 2018, but didn't for unknown reasons. Then in late 2020, the group had a reunion, but without Jazzy. Edit:I read that Jazzy's photos where she was part of the group was removed
The issue with a lot of these girl groups are that they are basically copycats of the groups that came before that had huge success. Therefore "often imitated never duplicated" comes to the forefront. Plus they use the same producers/song writers/sound as the groups before them but it doesn't have the same outcome. Also timing and having their own niche in the music industry is not there.
It's sad I knew them when Lighthouse was released. It was a staple on my playlist back then and it unsettled me to see that that song was a tribute to a lost member. Aside from this amazing tribute song, my next favorite song of their catalog would be Rewind. In fact I liked all their songs back then. It was all pop, fresh, femenine, catchy and it definitly has their own edge
I remember them from when I was a teen.I loved them and thought they they had a good setup to be the next big girl group. I was and am still shocked about Simone. I hope that she has peace that the other girls are doing ok ❤️
Lauren Bennett was in the group "Paradiso Girls" that's where I first found her . What's crazy is that Robin Antin created the girl group Paradiso Girls as well and they split up to! Damn every girl group she creates they never last long
Because they’re cash grabs for robin, SHES like a pimp, finds some pretty and talented girls, makes as much money as she can in shortest time possible, the girls make way less while doing all the work and don’t have a say. Once those girls are stop making her money she moves on to another group of girls it’s sickening She doesn’t actually care about helping these girls build a career
I'll never forget hearing Vacation as a soundtrack in The Smurfs movie and becoming instantly obsessed with them at a young age. I had no idea about this loss. My prayers go out to the girls and Simone's friends & family.
I have so many flashbacks everytime I hear ugly heart, vacation, wild wild love or lighthouse. Hope the GRL members are doing great. My love goes out to Simone.
I dont tihnk I will ever get over Simone's death, there is no doubt this group would have been mega! Show me what you got is on repeat for me all the time, it's just top tier 2010's pop!
Hi honest, could you please do a video on Elle King? I honestly don't know what happened to her after her song "Exes and Oh's". I would be delighted if you did because I would love to find out. Cheers!
This video brings so much nostalgia. I only remember them bc of the song the did with Pitbull, and that was the last time I heard from them. Honest, could you do a video about The Saturdays? I have never heard about them since the 'What About Us' song they did with Sean Paul.
Think Robin Antin caused a lot of issues for her girl groups and the members, themselves. I remember Tiffanie of Girlicious wanted more say in their music and Robin said the group was heading into a direction that was less "urban". So Tiffanie aka my favourite member left. It would be interesting to see you talk about Girlicious. Won't say what the former members are up to but Tiffanie ended up way better than Robin Antin.
I reaaaally liked GRL at the time. I wish that instead of breaking up, they would have continued making music somehow. I remember when Simone died and it really affected me, considering I've struggled with suicidal thoughts throughout my life. I hope the group can give it one last shot and make some good more mature-sounding songs.
I was all in for this band. I remember playing vacation every day all day and called into my local stations to play. It was such a fun band with such a fun sound.
I was so obsessed with them. I kept introducing them to my friends and playing their songs and videos everywhere. When I heard about Simone's death I was in denial.
Can you do one on the artist Brooke Candy? I was a really big fan I still am. She briefly got signed to ACR & left then did a album with Sia that never came out then a album on her own an dropped off the face the earth. I always thought she would break mainstream but remained a gay underground artist. I been searching for what happened to her but can’t find any info.
I discovered GRL while I was in college going through iTunes and came across their EP. I fell in love with their song "Rewind", and hoped that they could take off from there. I was devastated and shocked when Simone passed. The tribute song to her the remaining members did, "Lighthouse", is bittersweet to listen to, but really shows how talented the group was on all fronts.
G.R.L. reformed with the 3 original members Lauren Bennett, Natasha Slayton and Emmalyn Estrada and were meant to tour with the pussycatdolls but this got delayed due to the Covid pandemic. They began posting on their Instagram account and on Tik Tok and had recorded music before and throughout the pandemic. Then both members Lauren Bennett and Emmalyn Estrada both fell pregnant. Emmalyn just recently having her baby. So the reunion is more so delayed until otherwise is confirmed.

I remember I first discovered ugly heart 6 years ago when I was a junior in hs… used to listen to it everyday on my commute to school, even got a close close friend hooked on it too. Some random day I just decided to listen to their other songs when I overplayed ugly heart and found out what happened… I was so gutted, I replayed her part in ugly heart probably 10000 times before knowing what had happened :(
At least "Ugly Heart" is still played on the radio. Also, I didn’t know the Ugly Heart vs. Shout Out to My Ex controversy existed, but regardless, it’s ridiculous. The songs don’t even sound that alike.
I’ve known about GRL since i was 9 back in 2013, and i loved both fifth harmony and them at the time and listened to all their songs continuously. i just knew that GRL would’ve been the next biggest girl group had they keep pushing on, i was devastated to know at such a young age simone died :/ that really broke me. they should have been still a going to this day as the biggest girl group, they had the potential. back then i even introduced my cousins to GRL, we would sing all their songs together and even learn the choreography. GRL will forever be in my heart , rest in love simone 🤍
I’ve never heard of this group ever but I literally just balled my eyes out when you said the lead vocal black singer committed suicide that is so sad 😞😢😢😢😢
They actually reminded me of a K-Pop group, since most the members seemed to have roles. While I agree they were more Little Mix/Fifth Harmony, I also see some of that K-Pop style in them (because back then, even though K-Pop hadn’t “made an impact” (it did, but not a big one), I did see that influence of 2NE1 (basically a group like Destiny’s Child, but with the styling of Madonna and had a sound similar to The Black Eyed Peas, which they were going to release an album with Will.I.Am) and other 2012 girl groups (big boom of them Korea side). But I think even with that, they had their own sound and really were talented, even if Paula wasn’t as strong a singer (she should have gotten a couple dance breaks).
Kpop Fans are the weirdest People ever how are their like Kpop. They arent. Kpop got their Girlgroups through copyeng western Girlgroups. 2ne1 said themself that one of their biggest influences was the Spice Girls (aka the biggest and most influental Girlgroup of all time) and G.R.L were hevaly influenced by the Spice Girls. Kpop Groups didnt had an impact. But Kpop Fans are too self absorb to realize that Kpop isnt half as unique as you try to claim
@@lunaris5054 Agree , at least someone who has a brain, Yep I felt like kpop groups are like copy and paste and try to make their groups for western and nothing unique , GRL we’re every unique, edgy and maybe original. Still sad that Simone past away 💜
They had so much potentiel and their EP was soooo good. Y'all should watch Simon's last interview with G.R.L. There is something fishy going on behind the scene.
Vacation inspired me to be a dancer, I did not rest until I learnt the whole choreography. Ugly Heart was my high school anthem, I was shattered when Simone passed away and when the group disbanded. It's such a tragedy, I hope the girls will find success soon
I was a fan of GRL in the Ugly Heart era, particularly of Simone. When she passed I remember being so sad and also like nobody was talking about it. They weren’t very popular back then, but I was supporting them fully.
Most boy bands and girl groups fall into the fate of being one hit wonders. It’s way more rare than you think for a vocal group to have long term, successful careers
Everytime i hear are see G.R.L it breaks my heart. I really liked Simone from X Factor days. She was so beautiful and looked so healthy when she was on the XFactor. I think the stress and pressure of the industry pushed her to her death. R.I.P Simone
I used to be so obsessed with them! I was there in their early beginnings and when „Ugly Heart“ came out I knew that song is a banger and it would've been so worldwide popular, but the tragic happend in those days they would've become real superstars 🥺 I wished they would've make it as 4 members but it didn't worked out.
Why she had money issues? She was in the music industry. She likely had no cash because the management and the company had "yet to recoup" costs. That is code for pay the musician whenever the powers-that-be want to pay the musician and how much.
Most vocal groups end up being one hit wonders. It’s very rare for them to have long term success. I’m not surprised at all that GRL only had a couple hits
I loved their music and liked them better than PCD.I was also sad to hear about their member Simone passing which I noticed that she died the same year my cousin was born who also shares the same name.
I think how they dressed wasn't up to snuff - it's the person behind what they wore that was amazing. Their clothes look like project runway - cutouts of different cloth arranged in some eccentric shaping.
Lauren, Natasha & Emmalyn are G.R.L. as of late, which was said at the end of this clip. They're tight with Robin as well, even doing a promising LIVE stream for fans a while back; securing hope for that Antin girl group visual we love. Even more of a promising formation n group bond than Robin's sad stance with Nicole from PCD. The thing is though is money. If there are no funds to back them up, then no records or gigs will happen. At the end of the day it's all about drive. Hopefully someday those 3 ladies do get a good deal n financial backing; in order to have a G.R.L comeback. There's always hope though, because according to Robin's Instagram, her dance studio is always poppin, and the girls sometimes are in clips; dancing they asses off.
when i tell you ugly heart will forever be on my playlist. GRL had so much potential and I was gutted when Simone sadly passed. She was so talented…

Ahh this was so well done. So many people aren't privy to this group and all the mess that happens with Robin Antin's other girl groups.
I still listen to Vacation and Ugly Heart regularly 😌
Their Ascension and Decesension happened So Quick that it Freaked Me Out....
I remember I first discovered ugly heart 6 years ago when I was a junior in hs… used to listen to it everyday on my commute to school, even got a close close friend hooked on it too. Some random day I just decided to listen to their other songs when I overplayed ugly heart and found out what happened… I was so gutted, I replayed her part in ugly heart probably 10000 times before knowing what had happened :(
Some of these really unsuccessful artists have fascinating stories
ugh rip Simone. i followed her music on myspace up untiL the group and MAN she fucking HAD IT
omgg! i love and listen to g.r.l to this day! they were so lively and made good songs and fun videos. rip to the beautiful simone. ❤️
I just did a new documentary about Simone Battle on my channel. If you get chance to watch, I’d like to know your opinion of it.
@@justifiedbyjeury I actually saw your vid before this comment anf you did amazing😊
I’ve never heard of this group ever but I literally just balled my eyes out when you said the lead vocal black singer committed suicide that is so sad 😞😢😢😢😢
I saw them live when they were barely starting out and I KNEW they had it. So sad about Simone. And that the group didn’t go on ☹️
They actually reminded me of a K-Pop group, since most the members seemed to have roles.
I keep remembering them as the group with big potential that they couldn't reach :c I still get sad when I think of Simone, it really was shocking
They had so much potentiel and their EP was soooo good.
Y'all should watch Simon's last interview with G.R.L. There is something fishy going on behind the scene.
It's nothing "fishy", look up the signs of depression.
Behind the scenes, she had depression. She was masking.
Patron Tequila was one of my biggest teenage years bops. I will always love GRL
I was obsessed with G.R.L. Rewind & Vaction we’re bops. 14 year old me is screaming watching this video
Grl was my childhood theyre few songs will always have a special place in my heart❤❤❤
Most boy bands and girl groups fall into the fate of being one hit wonders. It’s way more rare than you think for a vocal group to have long term, successful careers
It's so sad, the GRL girls(and Girlicious) are super talented, they sounded great, I was shocked by what happened with Simone, it's very sad.
Im so happy u did a video on GRL cuz i was so upset the of the fact that they did not make use of the potential they had
omg seeing this title is bringing a flood of nostalgia in! can’t wait to watch it
Everytime i hear are see G.R.L it breaks my heart. I really liked Simone from X Factor days. She was so beautiful and looked so healthy when she was on the XFactor. I think the stress and pressure of the industry pushed her to her death. R.I.P Simone
No , it’s the financial issues that made it hard
I have nothing more to say than this world lost a beautiful soul too young. RIP, Simone.
when i heard abt them a few years back i was devastated over what happened
I'm glad I finally knew about the group
I felt like the girls had a lot more to offer😢
Finally someone covers them!
I literally just listened to them what the- 😭😭😭
I used to be so obsessed with them!
Exactly. The label underpay the artists on purpose...
Your comment reminds me of this scene from All Eyez On Me (which actually happened to 2Pac unfortunately) ua-cam.com/video/wIfDkKKxX-A/v-deo.html
REST IN POWER Simone 💔💔✨
I still BLAST their music when I cruise!
It’s been eight years since Simone Battles is gone, sad that she ended her life that way. They latest song was a beautiful tribute to her.
The problem with Girlicious was the fact that their were barely promoted . They were big on Canada.
1:17 No lead singer or Star! How sad! That's 😥!
Most vocal groups end up being one hit wonders. It’s very rare for them to have long term success. I’m not surprised at all that GRL only had a couple hits
GRL only has a few hits because of Simone's passing, as said on the video. It's obvious it'd have been just up from then.
Simone was so talented. So much potential! I miss her so much.
You should definitely do Paradiso Girls next
Ive been a fan since wild wild love , its so sad that simone took her life RIP Simone
I only found out about them when people accused Little Mix for sampling their song Ugly Heart
They could have been a big group now. 😔
No mention of "Vacation". I liked that song too.
Omg I was just listening to them today and yesterday
