  • Experiencing Walden Pond on a snowy day offers a serene glimpse into the winter landscape that Henry David Thoreau cherished during his time here. The pond, a classic example of a kettle hole formed by retreating glaciers over 10,000 years ago, transforms into a tranquil haven in winter, its surface often blanketed with snow and ice.
As you approach the replica of Thoreau's cabin, it's fascinating to reflect on his experiment in simple living. From July 1845 to September 1847, Thoreau resided in a modest 10x15-foot cabin he constructed near the pond, immersing himself in nature and introspection.
Thoreau's writings vividly capture the essence of Walden Pond in winter. In his essay "A Winter Walk," he describes the snow-covered Concord landscape, conveying the stillness and beauty of the season.
Enduring the harsh New England winters required resilience. Thoreau's cabin was equipped with a wood-burning stove, providing essential warmth against the freezing temperatures. He meticulously prepared for winter by adding a chimney and plastering the walls of his house to stave off the cold.
Imagining a retreat in the woods with a wood-burning stove evokes a sense of rustic simplicity and a deep connection to nature. Such an experience offers solitude and reflection, much like Thoreau sought during his time at Walden Pond.
If you're interested in exploring this further, the Walden Pond State Reservation offers opportunities to visit the replica of Thoreau's cabin and walk the trails he once traversed

You'll notice there are no streams feeding into the pond, it's all underground, and it's very deep. There used to be a pier off the main beach by the bathhouse, and you could rent a rowboat. If the ice is good, you might see a hockey game going on, and people ice fishing, or flying a kite...

Thanks for replying David, The ice is not solid enough as of yet. I have heard that folks have been skating on Warner's Pond. I am working on a video of Goose Pond it seems to be frozen over. Have you ever heard about the Amusement Park that was at Walden in the late 1800's? I have a video about that as well. Let me know if there is some place or something that you would like me to make a video about. ~ Scott with WalkingMyPath.
