Hi all, Just wanted to add a small bit of information that I wasn't able to fit into the video. During the ambush, a third S.B.S. trooper was wounded, whilst another from the S.B.S. was awarded the Military Cross - Britain’s third highest Military decoration - for actions during the engagement. Unfortunately, the full details / citation for the Military Cross haven't been released to the public. Thanks, LfE

I remember fondly how he and his partner spent the day driving me to visit some long lost relatives on the Isle of Wight. He went out of his way to look after me during the time I spent in Poole. The shame of it all is that 6 months after all allied troops leave, it will be as if we were never there. The Taliban will be in control, the terrorists will filter back and the entire war will have been for nothing. Too sad to contemplate.

True statement; however, one of the most basic tasks of a leader...as the ambush was initiated, and the fire fight took place...is to know where all your people are and what they are doing in the fight from start to finish. Special Forces or basic infantry. They were there for I will assume hours before they were extracted....and they took a headcount "After they landed?" Yes, it happens.....it never should.

It could have been a bit of arrogance from the SRR/14 Int moving to Afghanistan from a successful decade in NI, which went towards enabling the current Peace Process. They could have listened to the hard-won knowledge gleaned by troops who'd been operating in Helmand. A small team of SBS and SRR oppos can't just drive about a hostile area without overwhelming firepower to back them up. Sad about Pat's. He trained me on my NCO's cadre and we trained alongside eachother in the gym in Os.
You don't have to reveal the classified mission in order to ready a quick reaction force to be on stand by between this and this date and time....haven't we learned that yet? See Blackhawk down, Lone survivor amongst others. Spec Ops seems to keep making the same mistakes...that's not good.

I was with a canadian company that arrived at fob Robinson early in the morning of April 2006. We had lav-3's, and when the taliban saw that the proceded to leave town. Over 200 vehicles full of fighting aged guys fled. Hats off to you crazy brits for dealing with that in the light role.
If you are going to do the year of 2006, do canadians next please! We held down kandahar province while the americans were busy with iraq and stopped the largest taliban offensive in that province since the start of the war.
I read the Canadians were used as shock troops in WW1 because the French for example refused to go forward and made a deal with their generals to not advance only hold the line. Only the Canadians would advance with alacrity the English officer who entered a trench taken by the Canadians was shocked at the charnel house of left over corpses. In short the Canadians are not to be taken lightly which they often are.

The King wanted Monash to take over as leader of the Allied forces but the establishment wouldn’t have it. I was in the Pathfinder Platoon on that deployment. We worked with these 2 guys before the Brigade showed up. We where all gutted to hear what later happened to them RIP. It was the best and worst time of my career .

Great account of the operation. Some interesting observations about how long it took to deploy the Paras into theatre and no RRF being on standby . Some rich lessons there I imagine.
70+ weapons firing at you in an ambush scenario is an absolute nightmare situation, almost at the end of the Op and getting hit up like that. Thanks for telling their story.

A strange story, all those assets called in so late in the event. Too late to save the two soldiers. Four Taliban captured, two of which were killed and two escaped? How did they manage to escape?
How did they manage to escape? I guess we'll never know. Outmanned by the enemy, I guess they were not able to secure them, in a ditch, whilst returning fire.
Having an enemy of 70 hit you as your packing up to leave must be overwhelming. Also anything involving SRR is so secret the details of any of their operations is redacted to almost nothing

Enough, I would have thought to lay down a lot of suppressive fire against the Taliban. These regiments mentioned, are all hardened troops. None better in the British army. Yet according to the video, did not do a head count for any missing until back at base and didn't go back until the following day to retrieve or rescue their comrades? Something feels unreal about this story, to my mind.
I'm American and I am saddened by these two men's deaths. They fought for our freedom from tyranny and oppression-what better cause is there? Thank you gentlemen.

Steven Keery thanks for your support sir very appreciated, I’m Nepali and of course many of my friends and relatives are Gurkha Veterans/still serving and my very own uncle is a Colour Sgt in 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles (2RGR) with 4 tours of Afghanistan over 22 years of Service, but sadly it wasn’t until 2009 thanks to the great Joanna Lumley campaign that the Gurkhas were allowed to settle in the UK, in fact there was a case in 2008 when Colour Sgt Krishna Bahadur Dura was Killed by the Taliban in Helmand Province but the next day his family were told that they were to be deported because they had "no right to live in the UK" despite the fact that he’d sacrificed his life for Britain and served in the British Army for 16 years including 3 tours of Afghanistan and also service in with the Paras in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Bosnia and Hong Kong. The next year Cpl Kumar Pun from F Company, 1RGR was also KIA in Afghanistan and sadly received the same fate Please don’t forget the Gurkhas, they’ve been loyal to Britain for 200 years🙏🏽❤️

I personally think Captain David Patton and Sergeant Paul Bartlett both should be awarded Conspicuous Gallantry Cross or Military Cross. "The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross is an operational gallantry award given to all ranks of the services in recognition of an act (or acts) of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy." "The Military Cross is an operational gallantry award given to all ranks of the services in recognition of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land." They both show extreme courage against enemy fire and fight till the last man standing.

There was a saying by some general. 'if a soldier is telling you he is not afraid, he is either lying or he is a gurkha'.
Imagine being Pashtun and thinking you had an advantage at elevation, and then they land GD Gurkhas on you...
These Gurkhas are seriously deadly. In a close combat, without fire weapons, I don't know ANY unit in the whole world which can mess with them

How did they manage to escape? I guess we'll never know. Outmanned by the enemy, I guess they were not able to secure them, in a ditch, whilst returning fire.

@@DM-nz4fs : From viewing the video they had land rovers, presumably equipped with machine guns, if not 30 cal or 50cal. Enough, I would have thought to lay down a lot of suppressive fire against the Taliban.
These regiments mentioned, are all hardened troops. None better in the British army. Yet according to the video, did not do a head count for any missing until back at base and didn't go back until the following day to retrieve or rescue their comrades?
Something feels unreal about this story, to my mind.
I'm American and I am saddened by these two men's deaths. They fought for our freedom from tyranny and oppression-what better cause is there? Thank you gentlemen.

Steven Keery thanks for your support sir very appreciated, I’m Nepali and of course many of my friends and relatives are Gurkha Veterans/still serving and my very own uncle is a Colour Sgt in 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles (2RGR) with 4 tours of Afghanistan over 22 years of Service, but sadly it wasn’t until 2009 thanks to the great Joanna Lumley campaign that the Gurkhas were allowed to settle in the UK, in fact there was a case in 2008 when Colour Sgt Krishna Bahadur Dura was Killed by the Taliban in Helmand Province but the next day his family were told that they were to be deported because they had "no right to live in the UK" despite the fact that he’d sacrificed his life for Britain and served in the British Army for 16 years including 3 tours of Afghanistan and also service in with the Paras in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Bosnia and Hong Kong.
The next year Cpl Kumar Pun from F Company, 1RGR was also KIA in Afghanistan and sadly received the same fate
Please don’t forget the Gurkhas, they’ve been loyal to Britain for 200 years🙏🏽❤️

The efforts of Joanna Lumley and others, has done much to rectify that situation.
The previous commentator, Mr. Churchill is literally the first person I have ever encountered that has been critical of Gurkha troops. I cannot speak for his experience but everything I have read or heard of them, speaks highly of their loyalty and courage in the face of adversity.

Hi, I am ex C Coy 3 Para and can remember the RAF scrounging aircraft from all over to drop our Brigade into Cyprus in the early sixties. Since then its been “Do more with less” and get use to it! I feel sorry for the lads these days when Regiments have disappeared or been amalgamated as have the Attached Arms. To think that the Brigades of Gurkhas are down to one battalion. But some things never change, ONCE A PARA, ALWAYS A PARA. Kia kaha e harera.
A terrible shame for the loss of those men.

I personally think Captain David Patton and Sergeant Paul Bartlett both should be awarded Conspicuous Gallantry Cross or Military Cross.

They both show extreme courage against enemy fire and fight till the last man standing.

Nice to have some info about the SRR - seems to be a very secretive unit due to their nature. The only thing I know for sure about them is that they had custom Rolexes made (no joke)!
