A nuclear mortar round: The Davy Crockett

- During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union developed all sorts of nuclear devices to bring destruction to one another. While the Soviets focused their efforts on larger and larger weapons, the Americans focused on miniaturization. The result of the Americans' efforts was the Davy Crockett, named after the folk hero of the same name. This mortar round was capable of delivering a nuclear device of a yield equivalent to 20 tonnes of TNT. Learn more about this remarkable piece of engineering with this video!

Víc než Davy Crockett se mi líbil kanon M65 ráže 280 mm známý jako Atomic Annie - na YT je záběr z jediného pokusného výstřelu na střelnici White Sands v USA. (Jaderný test Upshot-Knothole Grable). Pak byla tato zbraň dislokována ve West Germany. V osmdesátých letech jsme měli ve výzbroji tank T80 s kanonem ráže 203,2 mm - komplet 2S7 Pion s větším dostřelem až 46 km. Možnost střelby jadernou municí s ráží 20 kt. Rychlost střelby - 2 rány za minutu - maximálně 40 za hodinu. Životnost hlavně je 160 výstřelů.
Tak to byla taktická zbraň pro nasazení při pozemním útoku. Jenom trochu kontraproduktivní. Při ráži 20 kT by to vyřadilo i samotnou obsluhu. Také my jsme mohli zasáhnout ráží až 150 kT na vzdálenost od 10,6 km do 42 km. Tak jsme říkali důstojníkovi - pokud to odpálíme na 10,6 km, tak nás to zabije také. Odpověď zněla: Je prvořadým úkolem odpálení, přežití už tak důležité není.. (1981)

Ještě zajímavější zbraň než Davy Crockett byla Atomová demoliční munice W54. Byl to takový "jaderný batoh". Váha 28 kg. Výnos se odhaduje na 10 až 1 000 tun TNT

@@KrissyNotty You did a bang on job, as they say you can't judge a book by its cover. The Davy Crockett....like the world needs pocket sized nukes. Of course this is an exampe of when a new toy is introduced and engineers want to see what you can do with em, big, tiny, pocket sized, cute, et al.
