  • Part 3 of the chase, starting with servicing and recrew at Marquette, then eastward along the lake shore past Munising Jct. to Forest Center (Doty), where we were invited for a short cab ride down this stretch of the old LS&I serving a timber mill. In the last rays of remaining light, they made a pickup of pulpwood cars off the siding at Shingleton and departed east.

    This took me back over 40 years when I worked out of Marquette as a fireman, and engineer. We would leave on Thursday for St. Ignace load and unload Chief Wawatum railcar ferry multiple times then return on Sunday. It was Soo Line at that time. They did not provide us with track charts then. I ran the last Soo train out of Sault Ste Marie into Gladstone. Then WC took over... for a while it was chaos. Those poor suckers broke every rule in the book as WC started up. CFR 249 didn't exist yet, and the FRA hadn't taken notice, yet... but they woke up. It took years and at least one fatality at Argonne where the conductor bottled the air on a grade, to his demise. Ed Burkhardt was CEO and let it all go down while making millions. Burkhardt met his demise financially at Lac Meganton in Canada where a unmanned unsecured train ran away derailed and loads of frac oil exploded blowing away the community center, over forty killed... Moral of the story, all railroad rules were written in blood... still true today.
    I've a few rail-tales lasting from 1971 to 2007.

    I love this! The old L'Anse Depot, the outhouse in Nestoria, the L'Anse Hill! I watch this every couple of years and am always happy I do!

    Great to see this. Most of the line this was shot on is now gone. Everything in Marquette and from there to Munising Junction, just around the curve you see from the M-94 overpass at 11:20 is all history.
    Love those long, drawn-out UP summer sunsets!

    I really enjoyed this video. In specific, the scenery, some steps for powering the engine, the ride, and more. I have two W.C. ho engines. I think their colors are kool.

    Excellent videos you have here, a perfect look back at a small piece of what made the WC so great.
    For reference, the drop shown in this video was a gravity drop. In a Dutch or flying drop the engine accelerates away from the cars as the pin is pulled. The engine goes into the spur, and the cars go by on the straight track.

    I like the old railroad roundhoses. Is that still there and does anyone keep up with the abandonments in Michigan's Upper Peninsula? Wisconsin Central Limited still has an office in Appleton, Wisconsin believe it or not. Only rail cars have their reporting marks though, the units were mergered into CN.

    At the time that video shots were taken in 1989 and 1984, does the T&E crew based at Newberry, MI.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  8 років тому +2

      rodney4917 There were 2 crews based at Marquette. The crew working to Newberry spent the night and started to Trout Lake the next morning.
      After they interchanged with the main line, they worked their way back to Munising where the next days crew took over. That was the pattern in 1994.

      hansikatz Yes, a real shame. I miss the Wisconsin Central as a whole, but the ex DSS&A lines were my personal favorite.
