People actually thought t.A.T.u. were lesbians, years after it came out that it was fabricated. Some of my classmates from middle school and high school thought they were really a couple.
As a hardcore t.A.T.u. fan, who was there before the international success and after, when everything started to break down during their second and third album - I have nothing but love for them. They helped me out of the closet, gave me the opportunity to meet amazing people and even work with them. HOWEVER, the quote that Julia said was hurtful, we have seen her change over the years, she was on the verge of Islam, so she is slowly but surely becoming a conservative woman - nothing wrong with that, I prefer my homophobes to be homophobic to my face. Karma has done her good, she has lost her voice. And Lena, she is just a corn ball who can't seem to get a hit single on her own. Hopefully someday they come back, or not... t.A.T.u. was a beautiful thing, but it deserves to stay in the past.

Lena is a fantastic ally of the LGBTQ+ community and I’m glad she never disappointed us. Unfortunately Yulia post-2014 was still profiting off the hot lesbian act - check her song ‘Didn’t Want to Do It’. However, knowing the actual legal challenges people face in Russia and allied nations, their debut may be even more relevant now than it was back then. It’s an iconic song and it actually helped break barriers, even here in Western Europe. It helped us to confront issues we were only just starting to confront.
And yet, they remain the most famous Russian girl group, internationally. I’m Russian and listen to Russian pop on occasion. There is some good stuff there but nothing as iconic as Tatu.

@Idk giving a bad name? They did a lot of good. While it was an act or not, tatu gave me someone to look up to as a teenager. They delivered bops, and were waving the flag of acceptance long before it became popular in 2011 when we were flooded with born this way, firework, we are who we are type music. They were incredibly ahead of their time, and while the origins of the group had dark roots, they did a lot of good. After leaving their producer they participated in marches for gay rights and were pelted with eggs, beer bottles, water etc. Yulia took a weird turn into homophobe-land, but Lena still stands with the community. Melissa Etherage once said she didn’t care that it was an act, the fact that they could take a queer message and use their fame to push that despite they themselves not being lesbians, in the end it’s a triumph for the gay community regardless. They took an unfortunate situation of exploitation and did great things with it. No matter how homophobic Russia becomes, they will forever have to live with their biggest musical export being about as gay as it gets, and I love that lol

These girls were my life when I was a kid. I was soooo depressed and related to the music so much. As an adult, it’s honestly sad what they did to these young teenagers... I don’t think they had even made their first true kiss
In 2007, the girls released a statement: "Many of our fans of alternative sexual orientation thought that we lied and betrayed them. This is not true! We've never done that and we always advocated for love without boundaries." They may have been "actors playing a role" but the message is what was most important. As controversial as they are, T.A.T.u changed many people's lives, including mine. I'm so glad they existed for a short time.
thank you for making this video!!! I never knew any of this obviously as a very young kid in the early 00s. I still think about secretly watching the all the things she said mv behind my parents backs as one of my earliest "queer awakening moments" and though it is very disappointing to find out that it was all a gimmick it so important to unpack the elements of exploitation of minors/hypersexualization of lgbt youth for the male gaze and the inherent homophobia that lies within that sort of "marketing". This was very eye opening!!
I loved this song and group when I was younger but to find out how young they were and how sexualised they were makes me feel so disgusted and uncomfortable....
As a Russian I can say: 1. They didnt kiss each other in this clip it was montage work 2. They received letters from LGBT fans saing that this two girls saved their lives. As Lena Katina said, it was fake but it was based on stories of real woman. So nothing wrong with it
This is a really great video! Most t.A.T.u. videos I find have a lot of misinformation or fail to see them as individual people in terms of their views and all that, plus some of them don't even mention their producer at all. I think in terms of the history of t.A.T.u. and their controversies over the years, this is the most complete and accurate video out there, great job!
The video was like this, because it is the theme of the song. Even in russian it´s about a girl, who fell in love with another girl. After the video the whole world interpreted, that these two girls have to be in a relationship because there absolutely couldn´t be another option. Their manager sensed that pretty early and made a whole story out of it. Then these two were forced to admit that they had a relationship until Yulia got pregnant and the lie was pretty obvious. Not to forget these two were 14 and 13 when they started, 15 and 14 when the video was shot and the song "Ya soshla s uma" got released in Russia and they where 18/17 when "All the things she said" was released worldwide. They were extremely vulnerable and easy to influence by their manager
Man, tatu was the sexual awakening for me back in middle school. I was questioning myself back then, i have always been gay, but don’t know what i am or what i look for. But when All the thing she said came out, i knew what i am and what i want. I was crushed when i learnt that they were faking it. So crushed.
You might be not wrong, but your analysis is quite too 2020. I grew up in Russia with their music at their early days of 2000 and I remember how they were welcomed to industry. In fact it’s crazy to understand, but the Soviet legacy of law making mens’ homosexuality illegal was abolished only in 1993, just 6 years before Tatu! In 90s, many Russian artists (male and female) played with this theme in their music and videos to „celebrate“ the new freedom of minds after USSR, but no one had courage to show it openly - to kiss. Even in Russia ppl knew that weren’t real lesbians. They were marketed to the public of their own age (14-18yo), teens who haven’t defined their sexuality yet! That’s why it wasn’t watched as „dirty“ - everyone experimented in their teen years. Listen to lyrics in “Malchik Gay” - it talks about girl being attracted to a gay man, strange to be sung by “lesbians”? And believe me, if you’ve watched 1-2 early untranslated interviews (2000-2001), you’d understand they weren’t forced at all (and they confirmed it years after separation with Ivan). Girls were quite on the same boat with Ivan, they wanted people to react more, see how far they can push people’s boundaries. They didn’t expect business to go further than Russia and its neighborhood. Watch their Kremlin performance in 2001. Their producer asked them to show THE kiss, because Kremlin is a political residence of Putin (even if back in that time he didn’t care at all about LGBTQ+) Their image made them special and gave more sense to their songs. The beautiful story of 2 girls loving each other and protesting against the society for their love were more important and powerful than their real uninteresting and basic lives (of straight girls).

Just to clarify on Julia’s homophobic comment. That show took her out of context. What she was saying is that she didn’t want her son to be gay because in Russia gay men have a much harder time than lesbians, obviously due to the notion that lesbians are “hot” and gay men are disgusting. She said she would prefer her son not to have that hard life, preferring him to be straight as that road is much easier. She’s not homophobic, it’s just the climate of Russia. She’s preformed at gay clubs and after the episode came out she apologized to fans at a concert.

The president has said the LGBT movement is "more destructive" than communism... But I know that TATU has helped many people in Poland to accept their sexual orientation and many people have become more tolerant and open.
@@Night-Shade. LGBT FREE ZONES?! omg that's sounds inhumane, I went to Kraków last summer and never saw anything anti-LGBT, sad.
@@donghyucksmom2413 I live near Kraków and in big cities like Kraków it's not that bad. The situation is worse in smaller towns and villages. In villages, even if you have blue or pink hair, they immediately think you are gay. But it's all because of our government's absurd claims about LGBT. Unfortunately, many older people believe them.

Wish real LGBTQ had this type of success. I think the closest we have is Sam Smith.
There are so many big LGBTQ+ acts rn. Troye Sivan, Frank Ocean, Miley Cyrus. Lil Nas X coming out was quite a big moment in music last year. Emilie is not a great role model. Not to me, and I’m afraid that many have walked the same route as I did ten years ago. “While begging her baby to hit her one more time”, I pictured two very different scenarios in my head when he phrased it like that. A baby literally slapping her and bdsm. People actually thought t.A.T.u. were lesbians, years after it came out that it was fabricated. Some of my classmates from middle school and high school thought they were really a couple.
Btw, Lena Katina's solo career is very good, with one of the best first albums I've ever heard.
She even had a number 1 song in the US on the dance charts. Good for her.
@walter ocampo i was in my teen yrs when they were big. there 2002 hit song all things she said was wwe victoria theme song in 2002-2003. also bought a few of there cds. hear there 2002 hit song on siriusxm pop2k channel. which plays pop songs from 00-09. there were good together. they have faded away. like alot of singers or bands that were once big then are not anymore. agree with ur comment.
Actually, Lena had a number 1 song on the US dance charts on her own.
Dude in Russia we all knew that they were not lesbians
And yet, they remain the most famous Russian girl group, internationally. I’m Russian and listen to Russian pop on occasion. There is some good stuff there but nothing as iconic as Tatu.
100%, there was depth to the music and the concepts they chose in their music. It was so much more than the gimmicky lesbian shtick!
The early 2000s music that was considered super racy then is pretty tame compared to today’s hits . Like imagine if 34+35 came out then .
"I'm not saying I'm homophobic.... but I'm homophobic"

@Idk have you listened to any of the albums, fucking gay war anthems, gay bops, and social commentary left and right, man! They kick so much ass!

We've never done that and we always advocated for love without boundaries." They may have been "actors playing a role" but the message is what was most important. thank you for making this video!!!
As a Russian I can say:
1. They didnt kiss each other in this clip it was montage work
2. They received letters from LGBT fans saing that this two girls saved their lives. As Lena Katina said, it was fake but it was based on stories of real woman.
So nothing wrong with it

I think in terms of the history of t.A.T.u. and their controversies over the years, this is the most complete and accurate video out there, great job!
Fun fact: All About Us was written by The Veronicas.
Ah, I was just about to ask about the re-upload. Thanks for the explanation in the description box.
Omg.... 2000's times ♡
12 year old me was BOPPING to their songs in 2004.
So crushed.
For anyone who loves this song, Poppy released a cover of the song earlier this year, you can check that one out too 🥰

"All The Things She Said" is a classic !
Their producer asked them to show THE kiss, because Kremlin is a political residence of Putin (even if back in that time he didn’t care at all about LGBTQ+)
Their image made them special and gave more sense to their songs.
The beautiful story of 2 girls loving each other and protesting against the society for their love were more important and powerful than their real uninteresting and basic lives (of straight girls).
I was blasting all the things she said at the beach this past summer living my FANTASY. Songs still iconic.

I loved their music. They inspired me so much with their music but I had no idea Julia was homophobic for so long because I just would focus on their music. When I found out it like shattered me. This was the first time I been tested with separate the music from the artist
