This is arc and in particularly this episode is where many many (I'd wager MOST) One Piece fans would say they became true fans of the series. The culmination of Nami's heartbreaking backstory and her breaking down and sobbing until she finally asks Luffy to help her is still one of the most satisfying pieces of fiction I've ever consumed. It cemented so much, Luffy's characterization, the depth of the character writing and the quality of storytelling, the complexity of the themes and ideologies, the richness of dialogue, the VA delivery, music score and so much more. This is what PEAK One Piece moments look like.
This episode sent a shockwave into my mind when I first watched it in 2015. Never before had I considered the idea that an animated series could tell such an emotionally compelling story. The moment Luffy walked to Arlong Park was the moment I knew I needed to see this story to the end.

1. Get used to crying. 2. Get used to laughing. 3. One Piece is as simple as it appears... 4. ... Until it isn't. One Piece has a lot of different ways it can be split up, be it in terms of story arcs / sagas, the type of story offered, and so on. All you need to know is that a city is built up out of a lot of bricks, and you will for quite some time be in the part of the story that 'makes the bricks'. Making bricks is very interesting and lovely, but trust me when I say that you aren't prepared for the way a wonky little pile that turn into a glorious city in this story. Everything stands on its own... until suddenly everything is interconnected in various ways. It takes time to gather all those bricks that represent simple storylines, but eventually, almost all of them are going to be very meaningful! And even Nami's story is just a brick. Probably one of the most foundational bricks out there... but still a brick. Enjoy your journey, and remember: get the tissues ready!

Luffy is an intelectual idiot, but emotionally he´s a fucking genius. he doesn´t care about her past, he doesn´t need to, he care about her for the person she has been in all the other arcs, helping them again Buggy even if it will have been easier for her to team up with him, defending ussop village even if there wasnt a monetary gain and in general all the good times they have toguether as a crew. Luffy knows this persona that she have been putting the moment they enter this island is just a mask, a barrier that any other anime protagonist would have try to force themselve into, but not luffy, he let her do her thing and wait for her to realice she need help. every moment in this arc he just have being waiting for concent, for her walls to be down and notices that she was part of his crew, he give the image that he didn´t care or that he didnt notice her suffering, but is the opposite he care so much that he give her space to deal the problem herself and it is only until it was too much for her to handle, until the self-hate win and she start self-harming then he enter, and even there he only respond to what she need to say, no Talk no Justsu or any sappy speech, he just hear and wait for her to say the magic worlds: "help me" and he do it, not even interacting the big bad in all the arc until this momente, just knowing that he hurt his friend so he need to kick his ass. Luffy is my fav MC because he´s not the captain you want he is the captain you need.
This episode is a sobber for sure. But one moment that often gets overlooked is how truely menacing and human Oda drew Arlong the moment he asks Nami if he went back on his word or not. Its a great mix of big bad anime antagonist energy subuded by his underhanded tactic to keep his word. Its a physical manifestation of how strong emotional manipulation can be to a person

Welp, the plot is going to be deeper and deeper each arc. There are like 10 or whatever plot point in current One Piece and the recent backstory Oda gives us is the saddest of all of them (debatable) so yeah you're not gonna escape from sadness😂
Oh honey if this backstory for the *first arc* gets you, it gets so much more depressing and cutting. Oda has made it an art to turn the knife to get more tears out of his fan base.
Luffy may be a goofball idiot but he's extremely emotionally intelligent. He knew something was wrong before Nami had her breakdown. He knew she needed help before she broke down. that's why he asked her if she needed help. She may have rejected his offer but he had already made the decision that she was to be his navigator so he was going to stay until she solved her own problem or asked him to help.
