My partner played this song and sang this song to our daughter as a newborn at night to settle her, now six years on, this is the song we play every night (on repeat) so she can fall asleep ❤
I work in pediatrics. I never got attached to any of my young charges, but there was one little girl with autism who I worked with and helped to overcome her sensory processing challenges. She was a tiny little three year old who was nonverbal, legally blind, and cried something fierce at changes in routine and loud noises. She liked quiet, steady noises, and sensory input in the form of deep pressure massages. I helped her overcome her challenges and function in a typical classroom environment, and developed a strong bond with her in spite of myself. Sometimes I sang this song to her quietly when she was scared or upset to calm her down. It’s been a few years since she moved on to another program in a different school. This song makes me think of her.
My grandfather was 100 % Irish and my mom and her mom and sisters celebrate his life every year in Spring Lake for Saint Patrick’s day which is the day he died back in 2009 !!! He was an amazing man who created a beyond beautiful life - I was young when he died and so wish he was still with us today , every Saint Patrick’s Day is emotional for our family because we think of him !! However we all know he is in a better place now and each and everyone in the Honan family carries a piece of him !! My grandma has been alone since March 17 , 2009 and we understand how she feels about him - he was her everything and we are always there for her !!! This song is one song that reminds us of him ( this song is the song that my mom and her mom and sisters sing in Spring Lake , NJ ) We miss you everyday Pop Pop - Forever our Lassie - RIP Barry M Honan Dec 9 , 1934 - March 17 , 2009 !
@@DrunkenPostie Ed Sheeran has an alright Version (his other version is shite). It's a song you can't put your own spin on, cause that just ruins it. Like there's one in a Bar that he just sings instead of Sheeruining it.
I 1st heard this song years while watching a special on hospice in Ireland. The family sang this song to their grandfather who was within hours of death. His face was so happy and peaceful. It was such beautiful event. I fell in love with the song!
thats old outdated, the Celtic thing is linked by language. There is no evidence of the Celts in Ireland. There is also no change in culture before or after the supposed arrival of the Celts into Ireland. This suggests that if the Celts did come to Ireland they had little or no impact into Irish culture
this song is my number one song ever written but only by the high kings, they kept the roots of this perfectly written, most peaceful, amazing song in the world, no other will ever top this song
I learned first from the Clancy brothers version, then I taught and recorded it with my young daughters on my home four track recorder. It was a fun time recording our first song together. It is a very beautiful song/melody and now part of my family. I am a Mexican-American (Chicano) who loves world music, and loves Irish/Scottish melodies. Thanks to all the comments with anecdotes and history lessons.
This song makes me recall watching my baby sis, Heather, grow and blossom into an amazing woman. She, always with her adventures, asking me if we will go.
Mike Sullivan: I'm so sorry for your loss. I was listening to this on my MP3 as we were leaving Ireland after being there for a month this past fall...I still tear up!
I swear, every time I listen this I'm that much closer to crying heh heh. leaving America someday soon n' sent this to my wife. not sure If she'll be the going with me though.😕
I meant the series Outlander the music played in Outlander is so similar to Irish music of course they speak a different dialect but this music will bring you to your knees literally I guess you can familiarize it with gospel soul music in the south in the United States where I live now I'm originally from Ireland people sing the songs as a way of I don't know what without even starting to cry right now we were told we could not practice our own religion by the British we were told or we were force from our homes my forefathers and that went before me had the rules other houses torched as a froze to death with their newborn children all of their resources lamb cheese chicken potatoes yes there was still potatoes that were not all rotten cheese beef milk or exported to England to feed the fat bellies after British the Redcoats are whatever you want to call him no dogs no blacks no Irish people talk about slavery people don't talk about but the brightest at our land that was torture it wasn't like thicker and the gas Chambers but it was genocide brought on by the British government and Cromwell King Henry the 8th because he couldn't get divorce from Mary Queen of Scots you serious she can see I'm still a little bit pissed off about all that stuff United Kingdom test every country in the world try to destroy it good Kick In The Head isn't it I love it they want to get out of the European Union honestly if I saw Queen Mother walk by I wouldn't even nod at her
These guys are the best singing this song... not taking away from my native County Armagh when Tommy Maken and the Clancy brothers also sang it good too.
I saw them live in Ireland last december, totaly awsome. then afther their concert i got to talk to them. They are the most nice people i have ever met. And to top it all, the next day i met Finnbar at a coffeshop, He seemed to remember me and my company. (Hopefully in a possitiv way cos i had quit a few guiness and jamesons all true that day befor the concert) anyway, they were the highlight of my trip to Ireland. Hope they can do a concert in Holland one day.
i sang this in primary school and it’s what my crush sang on the last day of school to his class T-T this is a song that will always bring memories back
There is a lot of words to say about this song but what I would like to say would not do it justice, all I can say is Wow there will never be a song that is close to my soul than this song, 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶
Will ye go lassie, go? And we'll all go together To pluck wild mountain thyme All around the blooming heather Will ye go lassie, go? I will build my love a bower Near yon pure crystal fountain And on it I will pile All the flowers of the mountain Will ye go lassie, go? And we'll all go together To pluck wild mountain thyme All around the blooming heather Will ye go lassie, go? If my true love she were gone I would surely find another Where wild mountain thyme Grows around the blooming heather Will ye go lassie, go? And we'll all go together To pluck wild mountain thyme All around the blooming heather Will ye go lassie, go? Oh, the summertime is coming And the trees are sweetly blooming And the wild mountain thyme Grows around the blooming heather Will ye go lassie, go? And we'll all go together To pluck wild mountain thyme All around the blooming heather Will ye go lassie, go?
The lyrics are of course "Braes of Balquhidder" by the Scottish poet Tannahill. Just several words changed in most of the song and the phrase "Braes of Balquhidder" replaced by "all go together" The rest is almost identical apart from the last verse that seems to be new. The tunes are similar though not the same. The McPeakes slapped a copyright on it but that is not the same as actually writing it. As far as I know Francis seemingly didn't even claim to have written it. He said he didn't know where it originated but it could be Scottish (which it is) but it was his family who copyrighted it.
My Mom enjoyed seeing Ireland twice. SHE THOUGHT IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE SHE HAD EVER SEEN ON Earth. SHE WAS UNEASY ABOUT DRIVING ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD..OR W THE WHEEL OF THE CAR ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE..LIKE THE POSTMAN WHO DELIVERS MAIL..SNAIL IN THE USA.
I agree with the comment bellow. By god, i mean you do realist it doesn't really matter which side of the water it was written. Least not because the two nations have been mixing longer than any one cares to remember. And now here i sit in England with a Scottish Gran and an Irish Granddad, and you know what they'd both say? That its a great old Celtic song! And you know what, I've heard countless other songs shared and loved by both nations. Though this is definitely one of the most beautiful.
I listened to this song today for the first time with Joan Baez. I fell in love. I felt something I can't define, something warm inside of me. So beautiful. Is it Scotish or irish?
@CFCShame this song was written by William McPeake, a Belfast man...The Braes of Balquhidder by Robert Tannahill which is the song william mcpeake took "inspiration" from is scottish but this version is actually irish song.
Whalturk Listen to the rest of the verse, and think about the context of the song. It's a love song about the Highland itself. So what he's saying is, if he ever were to lose his true love, he'd find love again in his homeland, which he loves.

its a scottish song but then we are both celts
One of my very favorite songs. The High King’s do it better than anyone. 🌸
It doesn't matter who sings this song it never fails to give me chills.
Joan Baez murdered it, as did Ed Sheerhan.

So sooo true x this was my grannies song, she was from Brora. So many beautiful memories

This is so melancholic, and it's lyrics are hauntingly beautiful and seemingly immortal.
Simply beautiful. It tugs mighty hard upon the heartstrings.

Why does this song move me to tears every time 🥺💙
It does the same for me to

I use to sing this song to my Granda who saddly passed nearly 5years ago. It still gives me shivers. I love it!
exact same with my grandad and he died listening to it rip grandad im in tears
+Dean O Malley it's some song. I'm sure your granda would be proud of you same as mine with me. ☺
I played it for my sister at her memorial service, and I will play it for her when I travel to Scotland to let her go at Loch Ness this fall.
No matter where I hear this song or who sings it, it always soothes my Celtic soul
The melody and the beautiful harmony is bringing me to tears!
Hah funny coming back to this comment when the musical i'm in has three of The High Kings songs in it including this one

This is a wonderful Scottish song, sung by Irish Artists, the wonderful and historic connection between the two Celtic nations. Alba agus Èire Abù!
Gaelic nations not Celtic
Gaelic is a Celtic subculture
thats old outdated, the Celtic thing is linked by language. There is no evidence of the Celts in Ireland. There is also no change in culture before or after the supposed arrival of the Celts into Ireland. This suggests that if the Celts did come to Ireland they had little or no impact into Irish culture
Tbh I was thinking linguistically, but there are definitely cultural links between Gaelic and Brythonic "Celts"
Yes there would be, trading would have had some impact on culture between the two islands.
I like this song and the High Kings version is one of the best I"ve ever heard.
this song is my number one song ever written but only by the high kings, they kept the roots of this perfectly written, most peaceful, amazing song in the world, no other will ever top this song
