I loved the idea of ghosts solving crimes and catching bad people. I wrote an entire novel back in the 1980s with that theme. That novel never saw the light of day and now rests in a box in a storage unit somewhere.
But the idea stuck with me, so a decade or so ago I started into writing THE POKER CHIP with no idea what it would be other than ghosts solving crimes. Turns out that my main two ghost characters fell in love over the course of the book and the romance balanced against the fun ghost stuff.
And I had a blast writing it, so I started another one. And then another and another.
All five of these books stand completely alone, all five are ghosts solving crimes and in a couple they save the world with Poker Boy, my fun fantasy superhero.
All five are ghost books and romances. Fantasy Romance right down the line. In other words...
Romantasy.
Oh, no, I committed a sub-genre I didn't even know had a name. I don't think it did when I wrote these. Then came the problem of what to do with the covers and how to tell readers what these books were about. (We were still learning a lot on covers and branding and series back then.)
How I found these covers? Pure luck. I was sitting with a bunch of writers in Hollywood having dinner when professional writer and artist Lisa Silverthorne said to me, "Want to see my latest cover art?" I did because I knew she was amazing at creating figures and scenes with those figures for her own books.
She showed me the couple on Cop Car without the police stuff and background and I instantly asked if she would do the art for these books and she agreed.
For the first time I could see these books and now I want to go write more of them. Got a hunch I will very shortly. Thanks, Lisa.
