  • Let's do something a little different. If you like reading and you like video games, there are some great options out there for reads, one of them is Masters of Doom by David Kushner. Watch to get an outline of the book including a brief history of Doom, Id Software, and the men behind it: John Carmack and John Romero. Then I'll help you decide if this book is right for you.

Just a note that it’s actually “id” software not I.D. as in the id of the brain, or the id ego, which is a brilliant name for a software company

It's probably fair to name this book one of the key formative experiences for me growing up. I grew up playing Doom and was a sophomore in high school when the book came out (naturally I picked it up on release day). It had incredible timing too, I was in our school's computer science class that year and generally composed of concentrated angst. Reading the book kinda went like this:
    • Hey these are the guys that made stuff I like!
    • Hey they hated all the things I hate!!
    • Wow so they just went off and made something they wanted to!
    • I should do this!!
So yea, spent the next 3 years making games (not good ones) with a few friends of mine and learned a great deal of programming/math/etc. And hell, I still don't do bullshit work to this day.

I found the whole chapter when Carmack was working on the side scrolling absolutely enthralling and was my favourite part of the book. What leapt out was Romero was a gamer through and through and when he first ran the Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement demo, the way the narrative conveyed his awe was so well written. The version they sent to Nintendo was rejected but only because they had no interest in pursuing the PC gaming market.

Keller Kreative Games Jacked: The outlaw story of Grand Theft Auto.
They made a tv movie based on it called "The gamechangers"
