Impressing story !. Saw him live with the Zawinul Syndicate, he had a big aura, it becomes special when the human personality shines through the music, and when it is a musical genius it becomes magical! He was a musical shaman!
I disagree with your first point, and second, there's a Joe Zawinul Park in the 3rd district (where he grew up) and the memorial is a black granite keyboard. He also has a grave of honor of the City of Vienna at the Vienna Central Cemetery. The tombstone is a large, light gray rock, only signed with Joe's and Maxine Zawinul's autographs. The graves of Beethoven and Brahms and other famous composers are only 2 minutes away.

@@PeterMayer Zawinul had a particular mindset. When he arrived in New York as an immigrant after the war he already had a creative imagination and a belief in his own abilities. It sounds like a weird dirge, quite bleak as a sound collage, and that was precisely the point. A Stranger In A Strange Land. It's supposed to reflect his first thoughts and impressions of coming to the USA. Back then, that would have been a pretty daunting prospect for a white European immigrant bent on making his way in a predominantly Black dominated urban jazz scene...don't you think? He was such an intimidating musician, this doc is a revelation, his very human side on display here. How moving!! His final band perhaps his greatest, all completely astonishing, as is Joe -- and not a Rhodes in sight. He took acid one night and became Zawinul, already (suddenly formerly) one of the greatest jazz pianists alive?!? Talk about humbled (yes, I'm a keyboardist), good lord. Bless you Joe, hope your jamming with Ellington now.....
I agree with everything you say here. Like you; Hope he finds new musical sounds with Ellington in heaven! I heard him first time in 1977 in Oslo (The Heavy Weather Tour), and since then Zawinul has emerged as the most inovativ keybord player in jazz /jazz rock/ etnic ... name it whatever you want! His sensibility regarding sounds, phrasing and arranging is just amazing. And what a musical timing!! Here you can find inspiration in many, many years to come.
Saw Weather Report at the Palladium and at Avery Fischer Hall. Saw the Zawinul Syndicate at the Newport Jazz Festival. Miss him. Had almost of the Weather Report albums and had the Concerto Retitled album he did as a solo. When I think of God, the song, Milky Way always comes up. He is missed.....
Interesting documentary. I remember reading a comment describing John McLaughlin's music as "his soul [I.e. the soul of his music] is Indian" (or, at least, tries to be). Watching this, I was inclined to say something similar, like the soul of this music is African (or, at least, tries to be). Funny comment on racism at 30min mark. Also, interesting to hear about WW2 experiences c.35-40mins: Zawinul was a "tough cookie" and maybe that's partly why. Never a fan of his music, even if I can enjoy some of his mid-70s WR material. Watching this video gives a good insight into why Zawinul liked his vocoders as a means of inventing something like an African vocal sound (incl., in this video, some flamenco vocal sounds; a style that originated with north African Arabs). He really went for a raw sound: electronic tribal vocal music! One of these days I might check out that "symphony" record he did. There's an (entirely) solo concert or two of his on YT dating from the mid-80s that are worth a watch, and his duo with the Austrian "classical" keyboardist Frederich Gulda is something different (but pretty good).
I saw Weather Report the first time in 1970 (Domicil Munich, Siegesstrasse) with Don Um Romao on perc. and Miroslav Vitous on upright bass, knocked me out.
As far as I know won Miro a talent contest of students on which Joe was in the jury. He then took him aside and introduced him to Wayne Shorter... the rest is history.
Joe Zawinul, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman were and are my role models and source of inspiration. What me is possible, I do with various zithers and electronics. Thanks for the share it with greetings from Vienna, Guenter.
Watched him in 1979 at the Antibes Jazz Festival, at that time together with Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine. It was my introduction to Jazz and to dope at the same time. Unbelievable concert.
