Pull the motor out that Merc, find another motor that works as is, any mods you make will be very costly and cause further headaches down the line. I know its a loss, but you can sell the motor or use it somewhere down the line.

Wouldn't it be better to use a fuel cell for the buick?
Fuel cell is a good idea but the reduced volume in the tank is going to affect the mileage the car can get off 1 tank.
