kind of thrown off by the pick of Marvin Gaye - What's Going On as the #1 funk album.don't get me wrong Marvin has definitely done some funky sounding material but in my opinion What's Going On is not a funk album it's a quintessential soul masterpiece album.

The Bar-Kays are a nice blend of Funk, Rock & Soul. Some favorites are Gotta Groove (1969), Black Rock (1971), Do You See What I See (1972) and the Funkiest of the bunch Too Hot To Stop (1976)

This has to be my favorite video on your channel so far. Much respect for this top 10. I guess this makes me an old man, but as a teen I saw Parliament/Funkadelic back in the 70's in Roanoke Va. They tore the roof off the sucka, the show visually and sonically blew my mind! Only album on your list I haven't heard is the Betty Davis one, but I got to search that one out.

Great video Dillon! Another record I would have added is Archie Bell and the Drells “Tighten Up” from 1968. One of my favorite records of all time, brilliant writing by Archie and Billy Butler. The story is that Bell was drafted in Vietnam after releasing the album, and later found out while overseas that the title track had become a huge hit in America. Keep up the great work!!

Felt the exact same way when I first heard Betty Davis back in '93 or so. I thought, how can it be possible that this overwhelming force has avoided my gaze and aural pathways for so long. Immediately became a superfan and started looking for her stuff at every record show and then in '96 or so, started to scour the internet for any info. It was a long journey for her and her fans when she disappeared.

Thanks, Great list and video. I saw James Brown in NYC in a small club in 1976 and sometime a bit later at the Apollo Theater; I have truly great memories of both shows. I love many of his 1970’s albums… especially 1976’s Bodyheat. I am happy that you mentioned Booker T and the MG’s. My favorite album is Universal Language. He was touring as a solo artist, up till the pandemic and I’ve seen him 4 times in recent years, great shows that keep getting better!
Also like Chick Corea’s “ No Mystery” which is extra funky, Buddy Miles - “More Miles Per Gallon”, Sly and the Family Stone - “Stand”, Orgone - “The Killion Floor”, Material- “One Down”, Nona Hendryx - “Nona,”Con Funk Shun - “Spirit of Love” and June Millington- “Running.”

    @marclahn7072 2 роки тому +2

First off, cool to see your "hm" choices of The Meters, Cymande and Mandrill. Love all three of those acts as well!
Also, Isaac Hayes - "Hot Buttered Soul" includes, what I consider to be, one of the baddest grooves ever committed to tape (not to mention one of the wildest song titles) in "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic"... later in the song, when that piano trill comes in, you-are-in-funk-heaven!! It's simply one of the coolest audio moments in the history of music.
Also love all the FUNKADELIC records from 1969-1975, so your choice of "Maggot Brain" is appreciated and spot on. That's the record I would select as well (Cosmic Slop, s/t, SOTVOGIO are good choices too) but I think Maggot Brain is Eddie Hazel's finest moment. Also dig the wacky-unique and somewhat KISS-like LPs of Parliament as well. Mothership probably the best overall choice.
#A couple good suggestions of my own would be:
    1. ISLEY BROTHERS - GO FOR YOUR GUNS (1977) T-Neck (this is one of the greatest meldings of guitar oriented rock and killer, groin thrusting funk!) Really cool album cover too! A fantastic "live on stage" photo. And what with the smoke bellowing stage, logo and light show on display, it looks like it could be Deep Purple as much as The Isleys. Ernie looking very Jimi H. (like we were gifted a ghostly 70s version of Hendrix) and delivering some blazingly hot solos throughout the record. Bought this one new, at 11 years old in '77 (Lyrics Record Shop, Bridgeton, NJ) I basically spent all my allowance on ROCK and FUNK albums and 45s. This LP has stayed with me as a funk fave throughout my life. Such great tracks on this LP ("The Pride, pts.1&2," "Voyage To Atlantis," "Climbin' Up The Ladder," "Footsteps..." "Livin' In the Life") excellent from start to finish!
**side note: "Gene-Gene The Dancing Machine" a funny recurring character on The Gong Show, would do this humorous/barely moving dance to "Livin' In The Life / Go For Your Guns" from this record. Every time Barris called his name, that song, with it's slow heavy groove would start, and Gene-Gene would do his thing. A hoot.
    2. WAR - THE WORLD IS A GHETTO (1972) UA (what a great, eclectic underrated band, with so many engaging long grooves and infectious catchy hits, eg Cisco Kid, Low Rider, Slipping Into Darkness, Why Can't We Be Friends and the awesome title track to this excellent album) "City Country City" is a total epic. And watch out for "Beetles in The Bog" too (B-side of my "Cisco Kid" 45rpm)
    3. KOOL AND THE GANG - WILD & PEACEFUL (1973) De-Lite (many cool LPs from this iconic 70s funk band, but this was clearly their best. And it includes their 3 biggest and best hits of the 70s in "Hollywood Swinging," "Jungle Boogie" and the absolute killer, "Funky Stuff"
Nods to AWB, The Ohio Players, Roy Ayers, Fatback, O'Jays and The Blackbyrds too.
*Finally, the best comment you made in the clip, was this:
--> "James Brown was to funk what Black Sabbath was to heavy metal"
Well said, and as true as true gets!
    Rock on! ⚡
    Marc
p.s. had to jump back (kiss myself) on, b/c I forgot to mention that your choice of The Payback (1973) is a good one. Title track, to me, is one of the baddest of the bad, funkiest of the funky!
Also, "Head Hunters" (1973) and Jeff Beck's "WIRED" (1976) might be my two most beloved jazz fusion oriented albums. So good choice on the Herbie too. ✨

I enjoyed your video throughout :)

    • @analogsmog
      @analogsmog 2 роки тому

@@noblerecords yes the foundation is important and to not recognize folks like James Brown, The Meters, The Upsetters (the lil richard band) that put the stank in funk is mando. Even esther phillips and the queenie (marie lyons) had a hand in it with the latter being one of those unicorns. But as far as modern albums holding a candle to the classics of yesteryear the sound of sinning by the monophonics is a good contender. from the first song to the last its a well packed album. Kellys voice digs in and conjures up all those old funk and soul sangers and belts out some classics like promises and falling apart. but hey music is subjective and your top 10 might not jive with my top 10.

Great video as usual👍 Couple of interesting side notes: There's a Riot Going On came out 3 months after Marvin's classic and the title was a direct response to his title of What's Going On! Also when Marvin finished the recording he brought the tapes to Barry Gordy and he said he was not going to originally release it because....he thought their were NO HITS🤔🤔 Marvin said he was going to leave the label...and as they say in the Music Industry....the rest is history and Barry and Tamla had it's biggest release ever.....

Great video. I’ll lob a couple in the mix. The Jimmy Castor Bunch ‘It’s Just Begun’. & Parliements ‘Funkelechy & The Placebo Syndrome’ & ‘Motor Booty Affair’.

I might have put Tower of Power Urban Renewal in place of Trouble Man, but this is a great list!

Tower of Power could definitely be on that list. I also recommend their album Live and in Living Color with the 30 min version of Knock Yourself Out.

❤❤Have em all, Except Betty Davis.. Including the special mentions.
And you did pronounce Cymande correctly the first time. I've gotten into Cymande because my sister would play to death the cut, Bra day and night.
And you nailed the description of Mandrill! A funky Santana!

Like your list!... Fact: Parliament's Spaceship is in the Smithsonian. Fact : James Brown demanded so much from his drummers in concert that he always had back-ups that he would bring in during the show to refresh.. Kinda like relief pitchers in baseball... Honorable mentions : Roger Troutman / Zapp. "More Bounce to the Ounce" Might be one of the greatest Funk song of all times .. The Band WAR .. Defiantly!

"Hell" definitely gets the nod if you judge an album on number of gongs between songs! I remember the first time I heard the album back in the 90s, and laughing at how nearly every song has a gong hit before it.

I have a pretty substantial blaxploitation collection and a blaring gap in the collection is Trouble Man. I've been holding out for a clean old school but only ever found beaters. Probably gonna cave and snag a repop.

Maggot Brain is a killer album. Not out and out funk but so good. I mean it goes from the opening track, basically an 11 min rock guitar solo, into a gospel sounding song. Yet it works!

I agree with the majority of your choices but feel that the isley bros t-neck years were ground breaking in a big way as well
i was at the age where thats all you would hear non stop,,, starting with the 3 +3 album .....they sure had a big funk impact on me and my friends for sure !
hard ,deep and so melodic at the same time !.. and Ernies relentless solos was the cherry on top !
