On the second day of shooting, David Tennant learned that his mother, Helen McDonald, was on the verge of losing her five-year battle with cancer. Tennant immediately left to be present during his mother's final moments. This led to the shooting schedule being re-arranged to focus on scenes that didn't feature the Doctor and special effects work. The production was then suspended until Tennant was able to return, a stressful situation given Kylie Minogue's short window of availability.
It’s very surprising that he still turned in a fantastic performance. Kylie is fantastic btw.
@@fayesouthall6604 Genuinely, this is honestly one of his best performances in the role
I love how this guy just found out he's basically loaded and all he wants is a little house with proper furnishings and a garden. It's so sweet. He finally gets the simple little things he wanted.
Isn't he WONDERFUL! The simple things, the basic things.... the best 💜
That's what everyone should aspire for if they win the lottery, get a small unassuming house, an expensive security system and don't throw money at everything under the sun, just live the simple life. That's all I'd want, but then again growing up poor and still being poor, I know how to manage money so I'd probably do good.
Me too. Only I'd be adopting tons of pets.
Wait until the end of the season, you have to pay attention, but Mr. Copper does indeed make the Doctor proud.
Something I never caught in a later episode until someone pointed it out is he did a lot more than just a little house. If you remember he is "Mr. Copper," you can catch it. it is a throw away line but a wonderful callback to him.
Re-arrange the letters in "Astrid" and you get "TARDIS".....
I never noticed that wow
Gosh...Really?....=))
I've named my car "Astrid"... 😅🤭
Maybe she was never real.
OMG I didn't know!!
You might have noticed at the end of the episode they pay tribute to Verity Lambert she was the first producer on the show from way back in 1963 and was the reason the show didn't get cancelled after its first few episodes. She had sadly passed away about a month before this episode aired.
Bernard Cribbens, who played the guy they meet in London, is a notable British actor, has a long, well loved career, and this wasn't his first time in Doctor Who; he was in one of the two feature films made in the 1960s, alongside Peter Cushing.
Dude was a total legend.
*Cribbins please! At least show the man the last honor and spell his name right. 😠
He is a legend and from what I have seen and heard a lovely person, rest well Bernard.
peter cushion wasn't really Doctor who cannon to the 1963 show
@@DavidTLomaxthat may be true but it is still called Doctor Who, and it is fun to watch.
If I remember correctly, RTD reached out to Kylie fully expecting a no, and got pleasantly surprised when she said yes.
She must be a Who fan, too 💜
Minogue’s creative director approached the production team about her appearing in the show and they said she could guest star if she was available. Having her show up here as a one-off companion was a good way to transition between Martha and the next series companion (who I’m guessing you know about by now and are pleased about?) and gave them a ‘big name star’ for the Christmas special. Obviously minogue couldn’t commit to more than a guest appearance because she’s very busy but was thrilled to manage this.
"What's the state of the engines?"
"On fire?"
LMAO I mean technically...
"Allons y Alonso!"
He finally got to say it. 😃
🤣🤣
He might also have said, Hop to it, Hobbit!

Every time I hear the many Doctor quotes song or videos. This moment I always remember but forget it's part of this episode till I see it again and go oh yeah. It's such good dialogue.

"I think I just recognized somebody..."
That was fast. 😅
I grew up with Kylie haha
Rip Wilfred. Gentleman was an awesome actor
It’s Doctor Who’s take on the Poseidon Adventure!
True, it has a lot in common with that story.
Does anyone remember the MAD comic’s take called ‘The Poop Side Down Adventure’?
What a great descriptive play on words.
There's got to be a morning after.
Midshipman Alonso Frame is played by the lovely Russell Tovey, who went on to star in the great UK series Being Human (about a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire house-sharing in the modern day) and the US series Looking. He’s such a sweetheart.
Much preferred over the US version, at least IMO. But I think it’s fair to say that Doctor Who continues its tradition of seeding characters along the way and sometimes bringing them back-in big ways or small; roles or just cameos. Who (!) from this episode will we see again in future episodes? [many if not most of us know, but as the redoubtable River Song would say: Spoilers. 😊]
_"a million pounds ... I can have a house!"_
in London? barely xD
You may be able to get a small shed in a dodgy part of town
I mean it’s technically Cardiff so yes you can buy a house there for that much!
1:59 It would have been odd for this to be the original Titanic - the 9th Doctor already mentioned that he had been on that voyage and ended up "clinging to the iceberg". It would have been amusing to have Chris appear in the background, blithely unaware that his future self was standing nearby, though "Father's Day" showed the perils of interfering with your own history. ^_~
True but Minisode aside we have seen many Doctors of old appear so to me I always wondered if it's the exact Doctor that aren't see himself. With Rose and others sure one of us but the Doctor regenerating he can't conflict with his other self can he? I don't know or remember the rules and even if cameos on purpose in many specials and more like the Minisode it does throw things off of 'wait can they do that's? About them.
@@suntannedduck2388 There are indeed rules (more like guidelines really) regarding the possibility of such events, but I was being deliberately vague to minimise any spoilery info leaking into the thread ^_~
God Bless Wilfred Mott.
Love that man. 🥲🥲🥲
And Clive Swift. Was such a delight to see him in this episode.
You may or may not be aware of this, but I believe Kylie actually has a fork lift license and has been known to muck around with one when she gets the chance. I think her brother is in construction, and back in her Neighbours days would occasionally help out.
There are quite a few Australian connections with DW. As I mentioned last week, the 5th Doctor had an Aussie companion called Tegan, who I think you’d enjoy. Also, the DW theme tune was composed by an Australian, Ron Grainer, back in 1963. And while the Doctor spends most of their time on Earth in the UK, there’s a 2nd Doctor story called The Enemy of the World, which starts off on a beach in WA (edit: not actually filmed in Aus, though - a beach in England stood in for it), and has a few Australian extras.
Re Astrid kissing the Doctor - I think it must be in every female companion’s contract that they have to snog David Tennant! Not a bad perk, I suppose😉.
Another Australian to have appeared on DW, by the way, is wealthy horse trainer Gay Waterhouse, who has won the Melbourne Cup and other big races, and who had a brief acting career as a young woman in the 70s, who appeared in a 4th Doctor story. So if you look deeper there are plenty of Aus connections (and some more to come for you).
Remember Mr Copper's promise to make the doctor proud.
Mr Copper. Bless him 💜
"Why Titanic?"
"It is the name of the most famous ship in Earth's history."
"Didn't say why it's famous, huh?"
🤣🤣🤣
The thing I liked the most about this "downer" episode is how effectively it reminds us (especially coming from the last episode) that the Doctor is NOT an all-powerful entity, and he _doesn't_ always save the day - not even for the kind, pretty female!
And even if he says here that "it's better that way", I actually always took this one as an example of how _bad_ things can get when he is alone.
The Doctor really needs to stop making promises he can't keep!
Remember, nothing can breach the Tardis. The entire Dalek fleet cant do it. But the Titanic can completely by accident.
Hmmmm so true!
@julesreacts his shields were down when it happened, 5 reminded him but he didn't get to them in time.
The captain co-starred with Judi Dench in a britcom called _As Time Goes By._ Mr. Copper co-starred on a britcom called _Keeping Up Appearances._
And also starred in a number of classic Dr who stories (like the 3rd doctor early 70s story, Dr who and the silurians..)
Mr Copper also played Sir Ector in the 1981 film Excalibur
I read in an article that he HATED this and didn't know why he was booked to do the show~!
@@sallyatticum Okay, to clarify -- which "he" and which "show" -- the Mr. Copper actor and _Doctor Who?_
The old man went on to marry Hyacinth Bucket. And lived a wery interesting life...
How dare you! It's Bouquet! 😂
TBF we've seen him fly the tardis through and catch people in the final moments so. Not getting Astrid was a lwt down.
'I can do anything!'
'Stop me falling?' 😢
This story is obviously heavily inspired by the film "The Poseidon Adventure" wherein a giant cruise ship capsizes after being hit by a tidal wave and the survivors have to climb "up" to the bottom hull of the ship to escape.
Bernard Cribbins truly a legend
The original voice of the Wombles!!
He was also in the old Doctor who movie with Peter cushioned
This is definitely my favorite series with series 1.
And this has to be my second favorite Christmas special (the first one being the first of course~)
Although the Doctor saved people, the first ones in his mind are always the ones he lost.
I love the fact that you can see some of Nine in Ten's eyes at moments,
where he remembers his loneliness and pain 🙏
Same series 4 is fantastic how it plays out. The double at the end is my absolute favourite.
I love Mr Copper in this episode, he’s so sweet and funny and that statement he made at the end about choosing who lives and who dies is very powerful, I’m glad he got to survive all that.
He said that he was Passenger 57 was a reference to the 1992 film of the same name starring Wesley Snipes.
Saying that he was passenger 57 meant that he was a stowaway
"Look, food!"
"Oh good, someone's happy"
A couple of things about that street scene:
That church on the right has the interior Donna disappeared from. They've renovated since & allegedly, one of the blank depictions of a man from a crowd - has square handles on his head.😂
As they were filming the night shoot, Colin Baker (Sixth Doctor) was in a play at a nearby theatre. There was very specific breach of confidentiality.😊
What’s interesting to me is that this idea of a Titanic in space is so very similar to a video game created by Douglas Adam’s and novelised by Terry Jones and then 20 years later it was even adapted into a radio series.
Anyhow… One of the original titles of this episode was in fact the same name Douglas had used, Starship Titanic, they scrapped it of course when they had learned he had came up with it in 1998. (Great game and book btw)
I'm so glad one character, at least, gets a happy ending, in this absolute bloodbath of an episode! It's a great one, though, and lovely to revisit; thank you ❤.
This was a fun Christmas episode. A little titanic meets posiden adventure in space. Bernard Cribins as the old fella was a nice touch.
That whole bit with Astrid turning to stardust is pure Disney, I love it. After a Christmas special with this much death, I think it needs an ending like that.
“Welcome to Christmas!”
“What??”
Really channeling some David Tennant there! Love it 😂
It was such a disappointment when realizing Astrid is not going to be the next companion. Kylie would have been great with being with the Doctor. It's not just the Titanic they were referring to, but also the movie "The Poseidon Adventure" about a ship that was overturned, and they had to climb up through the wreckage.
I had to watch this three times to really get that this Titanic was an alien copy of our own. Always has to be Titanic; personally I prefer the Olympic, but that's another story.
I was heartbroken to see Astrid meet her end. I wish he could have carried her off with him...but, that said, the next regular companion may have had a hard time joining. I am very impressed how well Kylie has aged-even now, 17 years after this story aired.
Wasn’t Clive Swift’s (Mr Copper) first Doctor Who appearance. He was a guest star in the Classic Series in the story Revelation of the Daleks in a very different kind of role. A very talented and underrated British TV actor. RIP.
I have a feeling I'm the only person to have ever seen Kylie Minogue perform live and thought 'OMG that's astrid peth!'
‘I don’t care if he goes. You can fall off’ made me laugh. Never seen a nasty side to you before Jules 😂😂
🤣🤣
Such a great Christmas special with a ton of great moments. DT's "I'm the Doctor..." speech is iconic. Astrid/Kylie standing on the box to kiss the Doctor cracks me up. I always think it's amazing that an episode can have so much tragedy and death and still somehow be uplifting at the end. And ah yes, the great debate of whether you were a Neighbours or Home or Away fan - I remember those days. :) Thanks for the lovely reaction, Jules. Saddle up for S4!
This is one of my all time favourite Doctor Who episodes
You probably don’t have time to read it, but “Doctor Who: The Writer’s Tale” by Russell T. Davies and Benjamin Cook gives a lot of background detail on how all these stories came to be written and put together, in the form of e-mail messages written at the time. We find among many other things that Astrid wasn’t originally going to die, but RTD decided that her death was an improvement; that Buckingham Palace was originally going to be destroyed, but it was spared because too much had already been spent on special effects; and that RTD was strongly attracted to Russell Tovey (who played Midshipman Alonso Frame)-but Tovey already had a steady boyfriend. It’s all very honest and self-revelatory.
Loved this episode!
Kylie was great! This was when she was recovering from Breast Cancer.
Still remember her in Neighbours!! Back in the days with Jason Donovan!! She may be an Aussie, but she's one of us too!! ❤
Alonso was acted by Russel Tovey who was also in one of my favorite shows "Being Human".
I met Kylie when I was going out of a Pizza Express in London. She was coming in and I held the door for her, as I would for anyone, it’s when she said thank you I realised it was her. I’m only 5ft 4 and I towered over her.

I bet that was awesome!!
@@The.Badger. she was beautiful 😍
@@fayesouthall6604 Agreed.
@@The.Badger. yeah 👍
Clive Swift, who played Mr Cooper, was a fairly prominent actor in the UK - He was in a lot of things over a long period, but was most known for a staring roll in an early 90s sitcom - But somehow managed to give perhaps the weirdest interview to Doctor Who Magazine I've ever read, managing to be the only person I have ever seen flub a 'hey tell us a bit about yourself, your career, and your experiences on the production you've just worked on' style softball interview you'd expect a magazine covering a show to do (And the person asking the questions clearly didn't know how to handle an interview going that far off the rails - The interviewer was prepared for doing softball fluff. Not... Whatever Clive Swift wanted to do.).
Russel Tovey, who played Midshipman Frame, meanwhile, played George Sands in the original UK version of Being Human. (A show whose original premise can be summarized as 'A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost have a flat share in Bristol.' And while the show is not without its humour, it tends towards flipping between drama, comedy, and horror on a dime, and handling all of them extremely well)
I love Being Human so much. I wish the BBC would release the original pilot episode.
There are so many iconic moments in this. Obviously the doctors speech, alongse alonso and i think that forklift scene is one of my top 5 favourite scenes in the show the blend of chaos fun and tragedy is soooo good
I'm so so glad you're enjoying this adventure through time and space. We're all loving your reactions and super super happy you're having fun.
Your reactions to "Doctor Who" are always sparking joy in my heart, especially those tiny moments when you react to something that was at a time revealed for the DW fans in trailers, but you are going in "blind" (without any previews) and ending up genuinely surprised.
I just can't wait for the next week and seeing your reaction to the new companion. It will be awesome!
RIP Bernard Cribbins! 😢
When the Host take off their halos, the halo supports become demon horns.
there quite a few famous actors in this Jeffery Parmer from Time goes by with Judy dench and Clive Swift from keeping up Appearances. Then obviously the queen of Pop Kylie minogue she played street fighter too if you didn't know that long side
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Im so used to Americans watching this show and they never know Kylie. So I was happy to see you reacting to it and of course knowing her. I think this role was a big deal for her because it was quite soon after she beat breast cancer
" are those going to mov---AAAHHH!" classic Jules reaction, ;) loved your reaction to this one, you are getting much better at recognizing hints as they come, so prepare, because here come's season 4 proper, can't wait till you see it!
Hi Juliette, I've been going through your Doctor Who videos, they are great! :-) I've just noticed there's one mini-episode you missed. Unlike "Born Again" which was an important episode, this one is just a bit of fun, but well worth watching - it comes immediately after "Voyage of the Damned" and it's an 8-minute mini-episode called "Time Crash". After that, there is only one more mini-episode you definitely need to watch and that comes immediately after the end of Series 7, and it's called "The Night Of The Doctor", 7 minutes long. Avoid spoilers at all costs, but put that on your watching list! In terms of mini-episodes, these are the only ones you need to know about.
There have actually been many "supplementary episodes" over the years but most of them are either really short (like 1-minute long), or animated, or not really an episode and more like games or introductions to events, etc.
I have reacted to Time Crash! The link is here ua-cam.com/video/Nks9bx-LbJg/v-deo.html 😸
Thanks for reacting! This one is definitely sad with the number of people we lose, but still full of positivity.
I'm super excited for the next episode and reaction to the new companion! ❤
This is probably the best of the Christmas Specials.
This episode was based on a concept for a Doctor Who episode created a fairly long time previously by the brilliant Douglas Adams (may he rest in peace), the creator of the wholly remarkable Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a series that started as a radio play before being adapted into books, a TV show, a film and more! I couldn't recommend checking it out enough (especially the books if you enjoy reading!). It's so clever and so funny. There are also a few hints here and there that it might just share a universe with Doctor Who in a few ways! Douglas Adams himself actually wrote for Doctor Who during the classic era of the show, so it's cool to see some of his ideas put to use here.
The man working as a newspaper vendor who the Doctor and co. met was played by the wonderful Bernard Cribbins, a legend of British television who passed away late last year. I personally knew him from my childhood as the narrator for The Wombles, but he also appeared in the old Doctor Who movie adaptation (thanks to the replies for correcting me on that one, I thought he also had a small role in the classic run of the show itself) and various other things! He was just plain the best, may he rest in peace.
I liked Astrid, sad to see her go since she'd have made a pretty fun companion, but it could never be with as big a star as Kylie Minogue. Doctor Who usually casts actors who are known but not insanely famous for it's main stars (though of course they'll be a household name by the time they leave the show!), and people who have already made it big usually just have guest star roles.
Slight correction - Bernard wasn't in canonical classic who but was in one of the big screen Amicus remakes of a classic story.
I thought i read that originally they wanted to have either Catherine Tate from the Runaway Bride or Kylie (and i think it was Kylie) as a companion proper but thought no we'll never be get her so never put it as a proposal but it turns out if they had she would have been able and willing to do it.
Bit of a galaxy of british stars in there - Russell Tovey (midshipman frame), Geoffrey Palmer (captain), Clive Swift (Mr Copper) , Kylie (adopted brit 😀) and Bernard Cribbins (newspaper seller).
It's a big question but it's arguable that Bernard is the bigger star than Kylie here, at least for 6 generations of british viewers 🤣
Huh, I could have swore he also had a small role in an episode or so of Classic Who itself, but I guess not. My mistake, I must have been thinking of someone else. I shall amend my comment, thanks for the correction.
@@gazzamanazza4pm the confusion is probably because the films are based on a couple of classic tv stories and he's in the second film.
Or it could be because he had a small role in an 8th Doctor audio adventure **shrugs**
Just watched this episode today.
Fun fact this episode holds the record for the highest viewing figures.
Christmas for the Doctor is kinda like a Buffy birthday.
Well, that time of the week again! Missed the releease of this last week, but on the positive side, that meant that there's now two DW episode reactions in que for me this week!
Writing some stuff down in a random order that they pop in my head while watchin;
(Long one, as usual... :D)
It's (arguably) tad bit unfortunate that no matter how nice and warm character Mr. Copper is, all I see is the Doctor having a conversation with Richard Bouquet lol. Granted, I haven't seen much roles of the past Clive Walter Swift, but my impression of him is that he is simply just one of those actors that (for better or worse) can never escape certain characters they play on some other shows/movies.
A lot of his mannerisms in this one just remind me of how he acted in Keeping Up Appearances, and even though due that I just see "Mr. Copper" here at all, I can't say I'm bothered by it either that much either. He is just so... nice to watch on screen.
Speaking of old, and sadly passed, men...
Obviously, no spoilers or anything of the sort, but be careful about that old man with red beanie. Well, obviously by this point ya know of this already, but that's Wilfred Mott, played by late Bernard Cribbins. And he is DANGEROUS....!! To my knowledge he has the highest kill streak on the entire show! ...Because there's not a single viewer I've ever seen that has not lost their heart to him. (Again, by this point you've already learned why due the next episode, Partners in Crime)
And it's no wonder why that is. He is just... Well, I already said Mr Copper was kind and warm, but Wilfred is the same but on whole another level! He is THE kind and warm and simply the best Grandpa we all wish we had! Heck, according to legend Wilfred once met a guy who was having a worst day of his life and guess what he did? He gave 'em a HUG!!
...So yeah, be careful with him around, he is gonna steal your heart as well for sure!
"Alonso, sir!"
...And that's why this is a Christmas special.
Because at that moment, it became a Christmas to 10! :D
Finally, as of this episode as a whole...
I've seen many people who suggest/use this episode as the episode to show to their friends to get 'em into Doctor Who and the more I see this on rewatches I'm definitely starting to agree it's a good episode to do so. Fun, action, drama, all here, but there's also not much of references to past episodes the viewer needs to know of (past/ongoing plot lines and such) that makes it easy to grasp and just enjoy the episode even if it's your first go at DW. ...Not to mention the CGI that's definitely from that day and age, for better and worse lol. And it's simply just overall silly, in the Doctor Who kinda way I mean. Plus lastly, it's just one of the better episodes imo. :D
...That said, doing so "spoils" the "allonsy Alonso!" -moment, which is truly criminal though!
This episode has one of my favorite dr speeches
It’s insane thinking about how Kylie Minogue was in this - I believe this is still the most viewed episode (ratings)

This is by far one of the best Christmas specials on doctor who
The snow, or Titanic ballast, at the end of the episode reminded me of the Buffy episode Amends, when the snow started falling during Buffy and Angel's conversation.
Fun fact, obviously it wasn't a real cameo but the Queen was actually a massive fan of Doctor Who. Every comptroller of the BBC during her reign earned a knighthood... except for Michael Grade, the guy who killed off the show in the 80s. This served as something of a hat tip I suppose.
Didn’t know that about the knighthoods. Love it. Just desserts. Some people deserve to eat their ice cream hot.
So when Foon said she spent 5000 credits that is around (give or take) $193 AUD and it would take 20 years to pay that off, goes to show how little they earn and how significant of a debt the tickets would place on them and yet Marvin showed his love to Foon and how happy they are. It's truly beautiful.
Yeah it's a little weird, the conversion, and it's only something I noticed through this reaction. 5000 credits is made out to be a lot, but the conversation rate the Doctor states at the end is £1 = 50 credits, so the ticket was roughly 100 quid (Basically a normal train fare these days!) since it was about the same as what she spent on the competition. I'm guessing without looking that that's 193 AUD as well. It's a little worldbuilding detail that's easily missed (I missed it for 16 years!) that sells 'stuck' nature of the Sto people, and why so many of the ones we meet are dreamers.
@@AmazingChi Yeah I just converted it to AUD for her since she's Australian but yeah I too didn't notice that detail when I was younger
This is probably my 2nd favourite Christmas episode after the first one.
This is such an epic Christmas special that has a completely different tone to the previous specials, while still feeling very Christmassy (I listen to the song, 'The Stowaway' every Christmas - sometimes even outside of Christmas). It was an inspired choice to go for a Christmas disaster movie and essentially do 'The Poseidon Adventure' in space. I remember at the time such a big deal was made about Kylie being the guest star, I remember seeing a poster for the episode on a bus stop and my mind was blown - that was the only time I've ever seen a Doctor Who poster out in public here in Aussie land. I don't think anyone would ever expect Kylie to stay on as a companion, but her 'death' was still heart-wrenching. It might interest you to know that there actually has been an Aussie companion - Tegan Jovanka, an Australian air-hostess from Brisbane who travelled with the Fourth and Fifth Doctor (whom you met last week). She was played by true blue Brisbane girl Janet Fielding, whom I had the honour of meeting last year.
I swear, Tennant does some of his best work in this episode and his look as he holds his arms out for the angels to carry him away is just incredible. Then of course there's the, "I'm a Time Lord" speech, which remains iconic to this day.
I love the deserted London gag too. The Russell T. Davies era maintained a nice sense of continuity within itself, so it makes sense that after two consecutive Christmas invasions, people would get out of dodge. You've also no doubt been told by now that the newspaper vendor was played by the much beloved British acting legend, Bernard Cribbins, who sadly passed away in 2022. He'd previously appeared in one of the two 'Dr. Who' movies of the 1960s, which stared Peter Cushing as Dr. Who and were remakes of the first two TV Dalek stories. He also leant his voice to an Eighth Doctor audio drama, 'The Horror of Glam Rock,' where he played a sleazy music agent in the '70s.
This is definitely one of the best Christmas specials, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. But now, onwards to Series 4!
I literally just finished rewatching this episode 2 mins ago I can't wait for you to watch all of series 4
During the 1960's and 70's quite a few Australian actors came over to the UK to get work. One actress 'Sarah Kemp', probably best known for her role in the Australian soap 'Sons & Daughters', did have a brief appearance in a classic 1970's Doctor Who story playing a UNIT Radio Operator.
I was excited to see your reaction to Kylie! This is definitely one of the best Christmas episodes, even with all the sad deaths...
I won't say who, but one of the most beloved Doctor Who characters of all time had a cameo in this episode! Looking forward to you meeting them as well as the new companion who I have to say is my favourite ever. Series 4 is also THE BEST. Every single episode is incredible. Great things to come! :-D
The fact that he FINALLY got to say Allonzy Alonzo... is a great callback to an earlier episode
Perfect!!
Astrid is the companion we all wanted so badly but never got :(
I remember watching this on release on Christmas Day, such a good episode
For the record this is the MOST watched episode of Doctor Who ever.
Love this one.
Love following your journey.
By the way, I quite liked the Aussie shows The Girl from Tomorrow and Spellbinder. Liked one episode of the Aussie knockoff of Absolutely Fabulous Kath and Kim. I liked the Kiwi shows Outrageous Fortune and The Almighty Johnsons, particularly the latter. I prefer them to most US shows I have seen over the years.
I've just spent my long weekend bingeing your Who reactions - what a delight to have a fellow Aussie discovering this incredible show! Were you really a teenager when Kylie was on Neighbours? (You seem staggerringly younger!) I'm pretty sure I had the TV flicked over to the ABC at the time... watching, you guessed it, Doctor Who! But I was very young at the time and didn't properly get into it until a few years after it was cancelled. Spent years hoping someone might bring it back one day! ;)
Alexander, thank you!! I am so grateful you enjoyed the episodes. I'm in my 40's hehe so yes, I grew up with Kylie and the Locomotion 😅
@julesreacts The Locomotion is one of my earliest musical memories, along with (fittingly) Doctorin' the Tardis by The Timelords, later to become The KLF! (My musical education started early because my uncle created Rage.)
There were a couple of actors in this who were legends in the UK - Bernard Cribbins, as the news vendor, and Geoffrey Palmer, playing the captain, was in an old story from the 70's. Both mainstays of UK comedy for decades and sadly missed. And Jimmy Vee as Banakafalata, has played aliens in Doctor Who before, as well as R2D2 in The Last Jedi. As for the episode itself, the was a good one, everyone giving it their all, with a beautiful ending. Get ready for series four proper, it's going to be great.
I envy your journey lol you have thousands of laughs and thousands of tears to cry on this trip having watched all these and just finished watching all classic who you are in for a ride.
I don't know if anyone else has told you, but Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who.
A lot of people have mentioned that 😅
Regarding people getting fooled by the start; originally the episode was going to be called "Starship Titanic". A copyright claim put an end to that in short order, which Rustle T Davies privately said later he was actually grateful for; the finale typically name-dropped the upcoming Christmas special in the credits, and would have given the game away months before the episode itself aired. That said, the trailers and previews that went out in the run up to Christmas did spoil that reveal themselves; at least one trailer actually included the shot of the starship itself. This is yet another example of you getting the better end of the deal by seeing the episode without the nigh-unavoidable context of the time and getting to actually experience that opening as intended.
"Starship Titanic" book by Douglas Adams?
There is a movie "Voyage of the Damned" (1976)
@@JulieFreyHomeWebBiz It was the Adams estate that objected I believe, yes. Or possibly the writers decided not to chance it themselves. I may be misremembering the specifics
@@Madman13K I was fortunate enough to see live Adam's readings at local bookstores, including Starship Titanic.
This is the episode that had the highest viewing figures of the entire revival - it was the second-most watched program of the year across all UK TV, only beaten by the Christmas episode of the soap Eastenders. More than 13 million viewers! Partly that's because of how popular DW was at the time, but also Kylie was a huge draw.
Seeing the late Clive Swift in this episode is so lovely. His performance as Richard Bucket in the British TV show keeping up appearances is where I best know him from and he was an utter delight. Also the late Bernard Cribbins who was a Whovian from the beginning til the end and appeared in old Who and new Who. Also you should check out the show "the Good Place" one of the best tv shows ever made in my opinion.
The first time I heard of Kylie Minogue was for her role of Cammy in the 1994 film "Street Fighter" and a few of her famous musical hits such as "Spinning around" and "On a night like this" then became a fan of her earlier 80's hits I would had loved Astrid to have been the next main companion but I guess it was never meant to be as she would be a too famous for that kind of role and a big commitment.
Why Max Capricorn did what he did? greed and power basically.
The old man Mr. Copper was actor Clive Swift who is best known for the role as the long suffering husband Richard Bouquet (pronounced Bucket) in the British 90's sitcom "Keeping Up Appearances" he sadly passed away in 2019.
The old Captain of the titanic was also another famous British actor Geoffrey Palmer who is best known for Lionel Hardcastle in another 90's sitcom "As Time Goes By".
Both those actors have previously appeared as different characters in Classic Who.
This was one of most highest watched Christmas episodes in Britain that year and probaly the most highest body count of the Dr. Who christmas episodes so far.
This episode was also a tribute to Verity Lambert who was the first Dr. Who and female producer who basically started it all she sadly passed away of cancer in 2007 aged 72.
Filmed in the Coal Exchange Building in Cardiff - or at least the ball room scenes
Mr Copper will not be forgotten. Series 4 is a blast ! Might be my favourite ❤️
It's been SO good so far! I think it might end up being my favourite, too 💜
As I recall, the Doctor Who team did actually approach Buckingham Palace to try and get a real Royal Family cameo for this episode, but to no avail.
And with the Christmas special out of the way, we welcome you Jules to SERIES FOUR where every episode is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Let's gooooo ✨
a fun, possibilily coincedence, but knowing RTD and his interest in word play, you have to wonder... Astrid is an anagram of TARDIS
It's almost impossible to see but I suppose if you re-watch everything at a slower speed to edit, you might've caught the guitarist in the band. That's Murray Gold, the composer of all things NuWho 'till series 11 (but I think he's come back since the 60th anniversary, so Yay).
5:04 That is Duke from tracy Beaker
If you're a fan kf Classic Who, the Heavenly Host in this episode are very similar to the Robots of Death, and there are a lot of little details of the story that also feel like references (like the use of a kind of EMP to deactivate nearby robots).
The Heavenly Hosts have always felt like they were Cybermen that looked like Weeping Angels to me
Ah, I knew you'd be the reactor to recognize Kylie XD Too bad we couldn't keep her for a little while. A musical episode with her and Tennant would have been a lot of fun ;)
Anyway, on to my favourite companion in the next episode! Yay!
I utterly love this episode (probably my favourite Christmas episode for a while), and how much you loved it. It had just such a great cast of supporting characters with some tragic deaths, along with Rickston Slade being an effective character for people to hate. Unsurprisingly this has the highest viewing figures of any revival episode, helped by Kylie's guest role. Given how often the Doctor loses the TARDIS or at least gets cut off from it (which admittedly is a good way to increase the threat and tension), I've long thought it's about time he had a device to summon it remotely ;)
26:10 this bugs me. He says they recognise him as rhe next highest authority, but the doctor is a stowaway, a nobody. The titanic still has two actual employees. Alonzo and Mr copper.
They still could have taken the doctor to the bridge, because alonzo would default to the next highest authority
If Max was the one who programmed them he wouldn't have set them as default to the next highest authority on the ship, as in staff or officers, if something were to happen to him. Its in their code to default to the next highest authority but no one thought to tell them who that is
It's a sad and happy episode. As you said, the Christmas episodes always are fantastic. I'm glad that the older man was able to have a happy ending at least with all that money and to be able to live on Earth. Looking forward to seeing the first episode of the series! I think you're really gonna enjoy this series!
