"no one came to our aid"
Not quite. The US Army, on the colonel level, began assembling supplies as soon as news of the invasion broke. When the Argies proved intransigent to SecOfState Haig's shuttle diplomacy, the flood gates were opened and the US supplied Stinger missiles, secure sat com, and AIM 9L Sidewinder missiles which gave the Fleet Air Arm a 23:0 ratio in air-to-air victories. Wideawake Field on Ascension Island was at times busier than Chicago O'Hare with USAF C5 Galaxys. Also the US openly ditching its former pal Argentina and siding with the UK was a huge political boost. If they also supplied sat intel, is anyone's guess, but I would not be surprised if they did. The French declared full support, but, being French, left the technicians of Aérospatiale, the Exocet maker, in Argentina. Said technicians gave support to Argentina in handling and modifying their existing stock of Exocets. And lets not forget Chile, whose troops present at the border to Argentina fixed many of the best Argentine troops away from the Falklands. Chile even allowed for a swift repatriation of the crashed crew from Operation Mikado.

Remember how Thatcher said she didn’t know that Argentina was going to invade? What about how the log book of HMS Conqueror, a nuclear hunter-killer submarine, was lost after the sinking of the Belgrano?
The Falklands, my first war, was fought as a salve to Thatcher’s deep unpopularity, killing the youth of Argentina and Britain alike.
      A disgrace.

Nonsense the US were a pain in the backside and drove Mrs T nuts. to say the sidewinder missles were responsible for the success of the RAF in the air battle is just wrong and the sort of rewriting of history that only Hollywood could come up with. Ascension is a British Island which the UK permits the Yanks to us. The RAF has said many times that the US airforce did not play an active part in the conflict. There was a huge amount of anti American feeling in the UK at the time. I know being 22 and living just outside Portsmouth at the time.

@@railworker8058 The war was fought because Galtieri wanted to big it up for the home side and knew that Chile would fight back. He thought Britain would not. As for the question if it was worth it? The locals greeted the Argies with a complete cold shoulder and greeted the Brits with cheers and booze. The British fought for the freedom of other Brits. That is what armies are for.
Oh, and disappearing log books, really? Next you're telling me that Bush had pre-knowledge of 9/11, which is impossible since it involves the words "Bush" and knowledge".

I get what Trump says, European countries have been under contributing and relied on the US. The ex Nato leader, Stoltenburg was in favour of Norway leaving NATO when he was younger, when he was finance minister, he invokedckassive defence spending cuts, then when a cushy tax free job turned up as gen sec of NATO he went around saying countries should contribute more, hypocrisy of the first order. NATO has done a good job, but interference in Yugoslavia, bombing Libya, Aghanistan and expansion to the Russian border has provoked war, not kept the peace

In the Falklands, NZ lent a frigate to the RN to free one up from the Gulf Armilla Patrol. Thing is the attack on Serbia over Kosovo was way outside the scope of NATO and made it look like a bureaucracy looking for reasons to carry on and an initiator of external aggression. Yeltsin's Russia was no threat, it was only since the attack on Georgia that Russia has been externally aggressive.

5.5 m,7.62m,9m ..the list was endless ..it may seem odd but
If I was attached say, to an American unit etc in a war situation and ran out of 7.62m ammo for my SLR what would I do..ask the yanks for one of their 5.5m weapons??

While I understood nato in the Cold War what we did in Bosnia and have done towards Russia with the expansion to their borders is way beyond any remit. As for worldwide threats we live on an island with a nuclear deterrent and the two countries always mentioned are China and Russia. China can only run on trade which it overwhelmingly sells to the west , remove trade they are no threat and would disintegrate. Russia has a population of 140 million and if they decided to attack europe with it’s population of 500 million it would lose men every time it took a town or city due to garrisoning before they got to the channel, so are no threat and haven’t been for years. Being the poodle of America has been our downfall and must stop . Spend the money on a small army , 100,000 strong with navy and airforce similar to now with a strong missile defence system and stop going round the world fighting Americas resource wars and concentrate on the enemy within.

Its a dream of mine to see this accomplished, And in its place an alliance between the US canada australia and new zeland. Get the gang back together in spirit ( but still soverign and seperate countries) Only get involved with nato nonsense if it was genuine *real ( non artificially created) aggression towards any of us or other euro countries. And the member countries of this new pact ( under actual decent pro native rule) still having a large degree of say on whether they go to war or not. Of course a large scale invasion of say europe i wouldent worry about countries deciding to be passive.. if the corrupt govts of today are removed and replaced with decent ones people will understand that its a neccessary action at that point.
Really the entire EU/UN/NATO ect need to go. They have become the very thing they were set up to prevent ( supposedly) and require replacement.

Remember NATO was created post WW2 in Europe for 3 reasons
    1) Keep the Soviet Union out
    2)Keep America in
    3) Keep the Germans down
The USSR is no more, if America leaves that only leaves the third and I believe modern Germany is no longer a theat.

If we left NATO it would be the end of the UK armed forces. We also depend on the US for our 'independent' nuclear deterrent. If we left NATO we might have to seriously ramp up our nuclear program.
Please don't mention the idea of leaving NATO to Two Tier Keir...

Also they have conscription which we don't so can call up all men/women in the designated age group if needed. With new smart weapons both countries would suffer and the other main point is that they are surrounded by Nato countries so invading them would be an issue.

There is a small problem with the nuclear deterrent - it is not currently an independent capability. We share warheads with the US (with some cost savings). Presumably if we were 'independent' we might be able to maintain this agreement with the US, but we should probably start making/maintaining our own warheads.
... We should also have twice as many missile carrying subs (vanguard and later dreadnaught) and probably three times the number of surface vessels (the current escort capability might be enough for a single carrier. The local mobile air defence that can be provided by T45 destroyers (likely half of them, 2-3, available at any time) is pretty sparse even if all six were used for this purpose). Add to this resupply ships, minesweepers, etc, etc (we currently don't have a single AWACS aircraft - though the three Wedgetails, reduced from an initial order of five, may arrive soon).
And then we'd need people to operate this equipment. Yes, a focus on 'defence' may help, but so would higher pay and support for ex-servicemen... as would having a government that at least appeared to favour the nation over global projects.

In my humble opinion the US should have left NATO when the USSR and the Warsaw Pact collapsed in 1990. Then NATO could have expanded to include the ex-Warsaw Pact countries like it has now, but without US influence, and this would have just been a neutral buffer zone between Russia and the US sphere of influence. I'm glad you too can see why you understand that Russia are not too happy.
Back before 1990 there were a lot more countries under Russian aka Soviet control, plus their forces were 1,000 miles further west than they were until recently, and we were faced with the prospect of them steamrolling to the Channel Ports in 2 or 3 days. That hasn't been the case for 35 years now.

UKDF, sounds good to me so long as the professionalism of the regulars is maintained. It would be more cost effective. However, every country needs allies, we just need the right ones. I do think we should exit the United Nations as that organisation is more trouble than its worth. Anyway, neutrality works for Switzerland and I don’t see why the UK can’t either.🫡🇬🇧
