It all has to do with scheduling. There are only two docking ports on the ISS and they are scheduled for crew changes and supply missions for a year in advance. Have Starliner docked to one of them for 3 months instead of 8 days has thrown the whole schedule into chaos. Yes, they could bring them back sooner, assuming Space X can get a Dragon ready in time, but they might run out of "consumables" while waiting. You know, food, air and water. It's a very complicated ballet.

I wish I could have seen the landing. The "garbage" at the bottom of the screen prevented that. I am so fed up with the overlaying of film with unnecessary labeling. Maybe it should be a rule/law for all recordings of events be filmed in such a way so as to reserve a quarter of the bottom of the screen to be blank for whomever has the final control releasing it so that they may apply their special labels. Perhaps an eighth of the top of the screen should be blank, also, for those top labels in addition to the bottom ones. And then there's the side labels. What-the-heck! The amount of excess danger of prolonged space flight induced damage .
