  • Photographers have it so easy these days. I know the gear we have at our disposal makes us take it for granted. There's a generation of photographers who remember the days before digital cameras and for them, there's an appreciation for just how incredible todays gear is - perhaps an appreciation that only those with experience of shooting film fully realise.
My day in the woods was plagued by all of that stuff that you don't need to consider these days.

As an update to this, I now know more about the spot meter mode on the Lightme app. The spot indicator has three rings but it appears to read everything in the largest ring - that’s where the variances are coming from. If anything of a differing luminance creeps into that zone it will affect the measurement.

Now I know who it was in the woods that day. I did not have my LF gear with me that day though. Good images, Russel.

There was one other car there when I turned up, though I didn’t see anyone on the walk round.

My Pocket Light Meter app pretty much agrees across the range with my Pentax spot meter. In fact, I find the app (used with Apple iPhone) slightly more accurate when measuring in zones 8 through 10. I have two Pentax spot meters which tend to under read the higher EV levels which result in my higher zones being overexposed. In the end it's what you test and gain experience with that matters.

Agree, it’s something that needs a testing cycle to assess the capabilities. Doing that with sheet film probably isn’t the most economical route. 🙂

Interesting comparison between the light meter app and an actual analog one. Not surprised at the results. I'll stay with my analog tools.

The full field metering on these apps tends to be reliable as you’d expect. The spot metering on this particular app I really wanted to trust but it needs a lot more testing to understand how and where to best use it.

    Hi there Russel.
Indeed I too agree on your comments concerning young people who grew op with internet & smart phones.
They soley rely on the algoritmes from their digital devices and laugh at us using ananog technique.
I would like to put a manual Nikon FM in their hands, loaded with slide film ( little latitude) and send them afther ample briefing out in the field/streets.
We will see what they have learned about photography without digital technique and algorithmes.

Simply put, like anything that progresses, there’s real value in understanding what came before to make better sense of what you have now and when you’ve understood that you tend to stop seeing the predecessor as obsolete but see it as having critical importance.

Very enjoyable, that first comp, I'd have walked straight past, but it really works 👍

@@MHLandscape I’d have liked to get closer. Should have used the 210mm. Can always return and reshoot it.
