  • Thank you Bailey W for your generous gifts. Lots of new phalaenopsis keikis and seedlings from a very kind viewer.
    We also deal with a bad case of fungal root rot in a Phalaenopsis violacea. It's a tough lesson learnt, with cooler temps, tight pots and watering straight in to the container without checking the roots often enough. With the summer blooming phals not consuming much energy in winter, it's a salient reminder to water and feed much less than you would in summer.
    Happy growing!!

    That's such an awesome box, full of gorgeous surprises!
    I can confirm pallens is quite crazy, I bought a Rheingold x pallens and it's a monster, with tons of spikes growing all over, so, I'm guessing, that's how they like to grow, tons of spikes and keikis.
    Oh gosh, that Doritis looked soooo stunning and I hadn't heard of it before.

    • @OrchieDee

      Neither had I, but I have seen some sources say it is another variety of pulcherrima. If I can ever get any of my Doritis to bloom I'll let you know!!

      Orchie Dee Thank you 😊 could I ask about the bleach as well. I’ve used it for cleaning pots and sterilizing things, never thought to use it for the orchid. How much did you add to the water? And is it the normal laundry type bleach or the domestos type

    Magic Art is a really, really fussy hybrid. I don't know what its problem is, it loses roots at the drop of a hat, definitely watch the water when it is cool. All mine had left were three long aerial roots after the winter, so I threw it in a big mesh pot with some bark and big pieces of charcoal. It seems to be recovering, lots of new roots growing, but the leaves are still terribly dehydrated.

      Actually I noticed it's not acclimating well this week and yellowing off that broken leaf. Thanks for letting me know, I'm going to stick it on one of the heat mats.

    I lost my stuartiana from the Schwerter haul. :/ the cold spell and holidays did the trick. Need to reorder it at some point. Both summer blooming ones took hit, Kaiulani was the other.
    Yours look so great!

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому +1

      Interestingly the white (standard) stuartiana is variegated, but the yellow nobilis I got didnt end up with the same foliage!

    omigod , what an incredibly nice follower i swear the people in the orchid community are top quality! i was curious do you think the leaf chlorosis on your violacea is because of the root system? i'm curious because i got a new novelty phal which shows slight chlorosis around the rim of its leaf. i put it in high humidity and potted it so i'm hoping that will really make it happier. :) take care , hope you are well.

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому +1

      Yes.. it's not the only the only possible cause when it occurs, but in this case I'm certain it is. It's more about the patterning of the chlorosis that hints me to look at the roots if that makes sense. If it was 'natural' leaf loss from cold or even draining of resources by new leaves etc, it would be a more even yellowing.

    • @GL1FE
      @GL1FE 4 роки тому

      Interesting, a propos this subject I have to thank you - I thought about the yellow rims on the leaves of my novelty phal. I remembered how you soaked the roots of one of your phals , I decided to do the same as in transit they likely stiffen and dry up. So I soaked them the whole day!! During the day the blooms doubled in size 😊☺ I was pretty impressed.so I really appreciate your vids 👑

    Hi Dee can you give us a follow up on the Phal you treated in a month or so.

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Yep for sure. The phals will be getting lots of coverage once they bloom in a month or two. And it's in the phal growroom for now on some heat mats. I daresay it will be a couple months before we see any visible improvement though.

  • @lyndahollins2881
    @lyndahollins2881 4 роки тому

    HI Dee, Can you rescue a Phal without roots? I heard you can grow without a root system? thank you

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Yes, it's definitely possible. But doesn't always work if it's truly rootless. Usually depends on the other reserves of the plant - i.e. numerous healthy leaves. The plant will have no way of absorbing moisture or nutrition except for the small amount that may be possible by foliar application. Keep the base of the plant in a very humid setup (I use a plastic cup without drainage and constantly moist loose sphagnum). Make sure you keep somewhere warm but also decent air movement to prevent mould. Then cross your fingers!!

    Where do you get your heat at from, no sign of them here (WA).

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

      Amazon or ebay. I've linked the brand I got from Amazon in the description below, I also got some extra large ones on ebay :www.ebay.com.au/itm/VIVOSUN-Seedling-Heat-Mat-48-x20-Seed-Starter-Pad-Germination-Propagation-Clone/193243797007?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 . They are kept on my back deck on the big shelves... they work amazingly even being outside and are waterproof.
