they say this the most "boring" song in the album but for me this song is a foggy morning drinking a coffee thinking about the relationship could survive if they show up for each other in short the most devastating and sad song in evermore.
The lyrics "Cause we were like the mall before the internet, that was the one place to be, the mischief, the gift wrapped, suburban dreams" are so damn underrated
Yess! I don't know why i think she mentions them. She wrote "were you standing in the hallway, with a big cake happy birthday" which reminds me of Jake Gyllenhaal not showing up. Then "did I paint your bluest skies the darkest gray" which reminds me of John Mayer for Dear John's lyrics. "you paint me a blue sky , and go back and turn it to rain" Then, "when I got into the accident..." which reminds me of Harry Styles because of the whole accident thing. Then "and when I walked into the podium I think that I forgot to say your name." which reminds me of Calvin bc of him not wating to credit her for this is what you came for. This song is not boring. It's calm and very poignant. The lyrics describe coney island metaphorically as well as literally. It is a grower. It gets better with every listen.
evermore isn't just an album, it’s a lifestyle, a reason to breathe, an escape from this cruel world filled with thieves. It’s art, the first gift you open on Xmas, a hug from a loved one, everything you’ve ever wanted, everything you need.
As a woman married 31 years, I hear this song as a woman whose husband has passed away and she's sitting on a bench at Coney Island and wishing she had told her husband more that she loved and appreciated him. It's about regret and love and marriage. It's one of the most powerful narratives I've heard sung. Amazes me that someone as young as her can write this song.
i hear it as something similar :) i once read a beautiful story about 2 lovers in the 1960s and one of them passed away. they were both men and spent their time together in hiding. just like you said, it’s about regret and all of the words left unsaid, all of the things they didn’t get to do. one of the most memorable moments in the story was their day at the beach, which i kind of connect to coney island
@Marina Kanan im not a swiftie either, but the fact many people could "make a fuss" is that they learnt to jump into Taylor's perspective to see the world through the very lyrics she wrote from folklore, now that world extended evermore. Plus, Taylor is playing easter eggs on her songs, connecting them into a massive universe, weaving a world of emotions that could paint moments of our lives and they hit some (well, many people) when they have the right mind for it. So if you can not understand about "the fuss", then its okay. Its just that you dont play the game and simply not in the right mindset she created from folklore. 😁

WE GOTTA ADMIT THAT “NOT A LOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT” IS THE MOST YET THE BEST SCAMMED LINE OF 2020 😩🤟🏻 Edited: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TAYLOR SWIFT! WE LOVE YOU, EVERMORE! - SWIFTIE PH 🇵🇭
Taylor is actually a songwriting genius. The way she managed to mention all of her exes in a song so beautiful is just amazing. Too polite to leave me- Tom, did I shatter you- Taylor Lautner, Birthday cake- jake, grey skies- John, not thanking him when she was on the podium- Calvin( my favourite line in the song), accident- Harry. Also I feel like sorry for not winning you an arcade ring and in the tree line by the gold clock are about Joe Jonas and Conor Kennedy. Definitely one of her best pen games and probably one of the best songs on evermore.
Man I didn't even think of that. I guess she one upped Carly in crafting them all into a song, without having to go for the brilliant efficiency of that one line...
i think only the bridge part is about her exes. my theory is the line "a universe away" is the one that is about tom. aside from literally playing as loki from another planet, remember the original lyrics of a line in gorgeous was supposed to be "i got a boyfriend he's older than us, I haven’t seen him in a couple of months" hence him being 'a universe away'
@J.A.DinosaursMateStraightUp💙💚 of course he is. Why else will she sing about him in a song filled with references of her ex boyfriends😂😂The only ones who say otherwise are 15 year old delusional kids who are obsessed with others sexualities.
The way she used Coney Island as a metaphor, the lyric "I'm on a bench in Coney Island wondering where did my baby go" alone says everything, a relationship that was bright and full of life is now barren. Ugh this song is a lyrical master piece like most of her songs are, shes truly amazing.
I'm not a Swift fan but I was at work when I heard this and just stopped & listened to the lyrics... I'm currently going thru a separation/divorce and this song really hit home....I simply broke down.
I thought "Cardigan" was the most mature and reflective song Taylor had written and released... The memory of nostalgic times and old fashions, like the plaid shirts, the elitization of the "iphone", the acceptance of the culture of the rock (black lipstick) at the time of emos. Until I heard "Coney Island" and cried.
This song is such a great demonstration of her writing abilities. With this, she's proving to us that a song doesn't necessarily need to be 'flashy' and 'exciting' in all the conventional ways that are typically used to make music stand out - in order to be compelling. The production is nice, but it's not overpowering as it is in, I'd say, a lot of the music out there. It _forces_ the listener to pay attention to the lyrics, until they're hanging on to every word. Only when the song ends, and the full story has been told between the two characters in it, are you allowed to exhale and appreciate it for the lyrical masterpiece that it is. Not to mention the somber, withdrawn feeling state that it evokes. I can picture the character sitting in the cold, hunched over, staring out at vacant Coney Island, reminiscing on what once was. It's stunning. And, not to mention, Taylor wrote Matt's verse from what she assumed would be a male perspective. THAT'S talent.
she wrote Blank Space this way too. She wanted the lyrics to stand out than the production and it is rare for a pop song to be written that way but it still became popular because of the clever lyrics
@@starcouniverse9411 I'd say that Blank Space is a pretty flashy, exciting song, compared to this one. The lyrics do stand out, but the production is also a part of why the song got so popular. It was definitely written and produced to be a pop song. To date, I think it's still the biggest song she's ever had
I can't believe I did not pay attention to this song until today. This song serves as a metaphor for the ups and downs of a relationship and the longing for what was once a joyful and exciting connection. This complexity in her lyrics is so insane!!!
I feel like this song is describing the feeling of being a relationship where both partners are taking each other for granted and arent appreciating each other anymore. But they stay until the love just fades and they become more and more distant.
Again and again she proves she is the best songwriter of this generation !! Her writing skills are unmatchable ! Every song tells a story, as if we are reading a book. Also her voice in this song, so calm and peaceful. The lyrics hit so hard! Taylor is a genius !!
no but this is fr the most underrated track on evermore which unfortunately is taylor's most underrated album, evermore stans, im so sorry but we lost 😭
red: "Losing him was blue, like I'd never known Missing him was dark gray, all alone" coney island: "did i paint your bluest skies the darkest grey?" out of the woods: "Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? Twenty stitches in a hospital room When you started crying, baby, I did too But when the sun came up, I was looking at you" coney island: "and when i got into the accident the sight that flashed before me was your face"
And “they’re all standing around me singing ‘happy birthday to you’” from The Moment I Knew “Were you standing in the hallway with a big cake, happy birthday”
Taylor is beyond a crossover artist. She's cross-genre, an amazing performer, musician, song-writer, singer, choreographer, screen-writer and at this point I'm gonna throw in conceptual artist. She pushes the boundaries of our own categories in terms of labeling what "type" of music that we identify with which creates a feeling of expansion by just listening and following her lead.
A guy messaged me that, because he once gave me a cute ior plushies and I told him that I am grateful and why would I want a ring? So random to share this.
Break my soul in two Looking for you but you're right here If I can't relate to you anymore Then who am I related to? And if this is the long haul How'd we get here so soon? Did I close my fist around something delicate? Did I shatter you? And I'm sitting on a bench in Coney Island wondering where did my baby go? The fast times, the bright lights, the merry go Sorry for not making you my centerfold Over and over Lost again with no surprises Disappointments, close your eyes And it gets colder and colder When the sun goes down The question pounds my head "What's a lifetime of achievement?" If I pushed you to the edge But you were too polite to leave me And do you miss the rogue Who coaxed you into paradise and left you there? Will you forgive my soul When you're too wise to trust me and too old to care? 'Cause we were like the mall before the Internet It was the one place to be The mischief, the gift wrapped suburban dreams Sorry for not winning you an arcade ring Over and over Lost again with no surprises Disappointments, close your eyes And it gets colder and colder When the sun goes down Were you waiting at our old spot In the tree line by the gold clock Did I leave you hanging every single day? Were you standing in the hallway With a big cake, happy birthday Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest gray? A universe away And when I got into the accident The sight that flashed before me was your face But when I walked up to the podium I think that I forgot to say your name I'm on a bench in Coney Island wondering where did my baby go? The fast times, the bright lights, the merry go Sorry for not making you my centerfold Over and over Lost again with no surprises Disappointments, close your eyes And it gets colder and colder When the sun goes down When the sun goes down The sight that flashed before me was your face When the sun goes down But I think that I forgot to say your name Over and over Sorry for not making you my Making you my Making you my centerfold
IDK, it sounds like she's referencing her mother, who was with her always. Maybe she didn't appreciate her back then, but now reflects on the past and realizes she could've recognized mom more.
I cried so hard after listening to this song. I have been waiting for the apology that never came, I no longer feel the pain but I still remember all the pain.
omg this comment!!! I feel the same way. Like I'm fine now, but I still remember all the pain he put me through. At least now I know that I deserve way better.
i think my favorite part of this song is when taylor says:"it gets colder and colder when the sun goes down" because i think it's the perfect metaphor when you are falling out of love... gets me everytime
Not my fav but this definitely is in my top 5. This song and Long Story Short both make me so emotional despite the latter having a somehow upbeat sound
this song is a masterpiece. captures the silent ending of a love story... the sense of freezing, the loss, the responsibilities, the impossibility of turning back time. it is the awareness of mourning.
Definitely give songs like Soon You’ll Get Better, State Of Grace, Holy Ground, Ronan, Cornelia Street, Daylight, The Archer, New Year’s Day, Innocent and Clean a listen! I feel you’ll like them since they aren’t what you expect for her and have some sharp song writing, and some of them are similar to songs songs on Folklore and Evermore.
hear me out: every single line in this song i could sing to myself. this to me is about someone who is trying to forgive themselves. their darkness, their inner child, their higher selves that they abandoned for other people. “sorry for not making you my centerfold” as in i put everyone else before you every single time and never made you my priority. JUST A THEORY IDK BUT IT MAKES ME CRY. LOVE YOURSELF

Its the national. They are writing the songs with taylor feeding in of course. But the last 2 albums have the national all over them. As a massive fan you can just tell.

BIGGEST JOKE OF THE YEAR
The biggest LIE ever told by TAYLOR.....🤭
LMFAORYUGFDU BIRTHDAY CAKE JAKE
@J.A.DinosaursMateStraightUp💙💚 out of the woods and wonderland are about harry

“ The fast times, the bright lights, the merry go.” Sounds like This Is Me Trying “You're a flashback in a film reel on the one screen in my town.”
THAt’S EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHTTT
To date, I think it's still the biggest song she's ever had
incredibly well said!
@@jelletimmermans3916 Thank you!
Well said bro!! Same thoughts!!
I can't believe I did not pay attention to this song until today. This song serves as a metaphor for the ups and downs of a relationship and the longing for what was once a joyful and exciting connection. This complexity in her lyrics is so insane!!!

Choreographer? Taylor doesn't dance well, let alone choreograph. I agree with everything else though.
