    00:32 Intro
Welcome to Marks Mini Cooper S Mk3 built in 1970 and registered in 1971. This Cooper S was last restored in 1997 and featured in Mini World magazine. Unfortunately 23 years down the line and it's looking tired in some areas so Mark has decided to take it off the road for a full restoration which will involve stripping it back to a bare shell, sandblasting, and a respray. Fortunately, the engine has already been restored recently by Swiftune engineering

I feel your pain Mark. You’re doing a great job with the resto so far, it will be well worth a few setbacks when she’s back on the road.

This took me down memory lane as I worked (briefly) for Hardy Spicer in Birmingham in the early 1980’s and spent most of my time striping down and rebuilding these things - the joints are actually Hookes Joints and the reference to GKN is simply that GKN owned Hardy Spicer who made these joints plus the outboard Rzeppa type CV joint called the Birfield Joint and the more modern inboard joint called the Tripod Joint (sometimes Tripode) - happy days …

Interesting stuff! It's actually a relatively simple job once you know, i was just nervous doing the first one in case i messed it up. Didn't need the spare which is good. 😁

D oh! It’s just frustration that makes us do stupid things. Nice job on the hardy spicers 👍 you can probably save the cv joint too, if you can be bothered. There’s enough length that you can afforded to loose a couple of threads, so either a thread cleaning tool, or take a 5mm slice off the end or file the first 5mm of threads. Living the dream 😜

Thank you. It went in the bin as i wasn't sure you could cut a bit off the thread. 🤦‍♂

We’ve all been there. You get that sick feeling when you realise and will spend silly amounts to put it right and move on and try to forget.
    Feel your pain.

I get annoyed with myself for making these errors, but like you say put it right and move forward! 😅

If my memory serves me correctly GKN DriveLine were the original equipment manufacturers for Mini production prior to BMW minis.

I'm not sure. The only reference i have about GKN is that they supplied Swiftune, but they have now ceased production. Thanks for watching!🙂

Frustration meter off the scale Mark.. The Mk l & ll S's I worked on, I only needed to replace the needle roller bearings on the Hardy Spicers so never encountered the problems you came across there. I'm really surprised that MED hadn't machined out the 4mm recess. Makes you think that maybe they hadn't supplied their versions to anyone with the an original BMC/BL Cooper 'S' before. I couldn't believe the costs involved , let alone the inconvenience, added time it took you and hiding your debit card statement from the wife 😅.

indeed it was! Yes, i was surprised too, but i made them aware of the issue and they were looking into it. I live and learn and i have spare hardy spicers i can use on Bolt, every cloud. 🤣🤣

The hardy spicer new ones not only no recess but it seems the the hole pattern is different or is it the camera angle ? Rgds Don

Hello Don, No, the hole pattern was fine, it was just the recess. They now know about the issue and hopefully will machine some for the early S's.🙂
