The writers really did crush Sam's character here. There is a small window in season 03 where they can rekindle their plot as a couple but they kill that with Sam focusing on Mercedes (Didn't end up together). They didn't use Quinn much in s04 and they change Sam's personality drastically from s04 to s05. Imagine IF Sam didn't focus on Mercedes and keep his relationship with Quinn alive, Sam can have a proper prom night with Quinn. And seal the deal at the end of season s05. Just saying.
