  • Nice L/S of the Queen Mary liner coming into dock at Southampton for her twice yearly overhaul; three men in coats and flat caps stand on the deck of a boat moving out in the foreground; M/Ss of tugs going out to meet QM, then of tugs alongside the QM, drawing her closer to the dock. M/Ss of QM being guided into the King George dry dock with hawsers extended to dock.
C/Us of the side of the ship as we see a flag flying and an officer giving instructions; M/Ss of several men hooking a hawser over a bollard on the dock; some men are seen getting into smaller boats with cleaning equipment and baling out water. M/Ss of the flying bridge of QM and the Captain there giving instructions; the QM in the dock; the side and front funnel of the ship with men cleaning on the rigging.
Low angle M/S showing bow of QM, tilt down to show she is in dry dock, with two tiny (in comparison) men walking along the bottom of the dock. Commentator says "Only now does one get an impression of her immenseness, while (in contrast) the insignificance of man is emphasised by the fact that the concrete floor on which they're standing is 25 ft thick!" M/Ss and C/Us as we see three men cleaning Queen Mary's bottom - it is huge!
M/S of the stern of the ship in dry dock; we can clearly see the words 'Queen Mary / Liverpool' across the stern. M/S and C/U of the stern from ground level showing the huge propellors and men working on them. Low angle M/S looking up at the stern; M/Ss of the propellor and shaft with scaffolding around them; men at work on one of the other propellors.
M/S of bow of QM in the dry dock with flag flying and cranes on the dock either side.
Note: Extensive notes on file; 'Fact and Figures about RMS Queen Mary (Cunard)', plus a map of Southampton Docks. Cuts exist - see other record.

It’s amazing how we have colourised cameras when the queen Mary was still in service.

cant get enough of watching this ship. its amazing how small the wheelhouse was in relation to the beam. especially in the transatlantic lane, officers and lookouts had to be in the weather to do many tasks during a watch. they would have loved one of those full beam bridges like we see today

This was almost 4 decades before my birth, but i would do anything just to go back for a few days. This is when Britain was Britain, not the sh!thole it is today.

Absolutely! This is just over 4 decades after my birth and, being native to Clydebank where this ship was built, it saddens me to see what has become of Clydebank now. (Spoiler: Nothing).

You can go see RMS Queen Mary today! She's in Long Beach, California. Incredible ship.

God save the Queen! It's a shame they didn't build a cofferdam around her when she was moored at Long Beach. It would have solved many of the problems she faces today, and would have made her far more interesting to the public. How often does one get to see a ship out of the water?

At least she was moored in the hot but dry heat of Southern California, unlike humid Port Everglades, Florida, and the increased deterioration the RMS Queen Elizabeth endured...

The current repairs to the ship is going to involve or already is involving a cofferdamn. It will be interesting if they decide to keep it

And now her fate is in question...I for one say she must be saved. She's irreplaceable, couldn't be built today. Nor her history.

@fatjesuscoochierat4861 "Partially destroyed". Wrong. Queen Mary is being preserved. Her hull's in great shape today, and constant improvements are being made aboard her. She's doing very well.

@fatjesuscoochierat4861 No, they didn't. You are aware that other companies owned Queen Mary (and didn't put the care in enough) before the City of Long Beach took control of her and started restoration work and repairs on her, right? She's almost 90 years old, and we're lucky to have her around at all. Nothing is destroyed.
