    One thing to consider perhaps is that a certain amount diesel will be making its way into the oil with the DPF regenerations, this increasing the oil level. I have seen in certain instances the oil level is going up rather than down.

    I’m @12k miles into ownership of a ’16 GTD. So far I’m averaging ~220mL of oil added per 1000 miles but the figures vary. Whenever I check the oil and it’s a bit low on the dipstick I add 200 or 400mL of oil to top it up. I was surprised that this diesel used any oil as my Mk4 GT Tdi 130 took 4.5L at an oil change and I never had to add any before the next change. The 0.5L leftovers just kept adding up.
    On my car, 220mL per 1000 miles is about ~2L for a long life interval and ~1L for standard interval so you do need to have additional oil in between oil changes. I use Quantum.
    So, in my experience ‘old’ diesels didn’t use oil and new ones do. I think the reason is to do with the ‘low pressure’ piston rings that modern diesels have. I’m no expert but this is common on Toyotas, too with newer ones burning oil where older ones don’t. The lower pressure piston rings (maybe the oil control ring) seemingly allow the engine to spin more freely and with less drag (if it’s the same as a Toyota). Not familiar with reading oil level when warm. I always do mine when cold. You can also read the level with VCDS. I think 60mm is full via that system, but don’t quote me.

    I always find that if I top up to the high level mark the car’s performance seems to be affected, slightly less responsive…. but at mid level it’s back to its best.

    The maintenance sheets when servicing cars with these engines says the oil capacity is 4.7L, sometimes they might take a couple of 100ml more in my experience. My dad owns a 16 plate Octavia vRS with the same engine. He's noticed oil usage in his ownership but he covers around 20k-30k a year, before he owned the car I believe it was on flexible servicing intervals but now is on fixed 9400 miles or 1 year intervals.

    Hey guys I´m Jacob from Slovakia and I have Golf Variant GTD 2016 with engine code CUNA, manual transmition.
    I bought it from my friend and he had it since new. He changes oil every 10 000km (approx. 6 200 miles). Engine oil only Castrol Edge 5W30. I have it approx. 4 years and when I bought it it had approx. 100 900km (approx. 62 695 miles). Now he has approx. 120 000km (approx. 74 565 miles) and I also chanes engine oil every 10 000km, I dont rev the engine if the oil is less than 80 degrees, I drive long distances, every time I park the car I let the engine idle for about 5 minutes to cool down. I did this on every car and it always worked out for me.
    I work as a salesman for new VW vehicles and I also drive new ones which I always break in and do exactly the same thing and without having to add oil to the engine.
    I don't fill the oil to the maximum, always 3/4, of course when I go to the mountains with my bikes on a trailer and a full car where I heat the oil to 115 degrees, a little oil in the engine will decrease here and there, but not more than 200 milliliters.

    I'm glad to find this video, I'm using 7.5 gtd for like 2 years. With mix driving style. City 50% , fast roads 200kmh + and vacation 130-160kmh at 900 kilometers. Till yet not a single warning for the check oil. The level on the stick was lower but my garage ground goes up , on the flat surface was it middle of the stick and now its time to make service again cause every 10.000 kilometers I'm doing it , sometimes earlier depends on free time and prices. Same oil as yours on this vid. It says every 30.000 km but I'm doing every 10 and till yet Safe. the car is doing every 400-500 kilometers dpf regeneration 😅 with city driving. Idk last time in my homeland they said when putting oil , put it to the middle from the stick like in the middle from cooling bottle min - max 😅

    My understanding is these use oil because there is a trade off between oil and fuel consumption due to the piston rings being slightly undersized compared to optimal. This means less friction in the bore and high mpg. The trade being oil gets burnt. I have a 24 yr old car by another manufacturer which uses no oil but does ave 28mpg. My VAG Cuna tdi uses some, and has since new, but does ave 60mpg.

    As a general rule, manufacturers make the distance between marks on the oil dipstick to correspond to one litre.

    My 2014 Gtd did use oil and a lot of it. Periodically the oil light would light up. VW never admitted this but always offered to top up free of charge. I obviously had to carry a bottle in the car and every time it complained, I used to fill aprox a liter. Eventually sold the car with 100k km and the oil issue was the single reason why I didn’t keep the car long term, as loved everything else. More recently someone at the VW dealer and service centre told me that there was a big batch of those engines with sealing ring problems but VW never acknowledged due to large implications and cost.

    You should look into removing the selica bag from your coolant expansion tank as it can burst and block the heater matrix, if you take the lid off you can see it if not you need to replace the expansion tank as some tanks it’s not possible to take it out

    Even the old 1.9 engines were the same, i had a touran for 7 years and that used to go from max to min within 6 months which was bang on half a litre in that.. it never got any better or worse and wasnt too concerned about topping up in between oil changes.

  • @gofres

    From what I've read, the oil rings on the pistons get blocked easily on these engines, causing them not to seal properly and so letting oil into the combustion chamber..

    Im puttin an average of 2,000 miles per month on my 7.5 and its using a little drop as its asked for the oil to be topped up twice between services in the past two years. I will point out that both times it asked for a top up I had been driving it with plenty of passion but im well over that phase now and its never looked for a drop since. If you drive any car hard it will use more oil like it uses more fuel!

    Hey, good topic for a video. I think you have been one of the lucky ones with that level of consumption. I have 2015 Octavia vrs with 184hp engine and it’s burning about 1 litre every 2,000 km. still drives well and engine feels strong BUT it’s doing dpf regens more and more frequently, pretty much every journey or 2nd journey it’s doing one now. Same as other commenters on here, I’ve read that it’s poor piston ring design, so it’s burning oil in cylinder, and making more soot which ends up in dpf. Worried that I’m facing a big bill sometime soon for dpf replacement.
    My wife’s 2011 150hp tdi Octavia doesn’t burn a drop of oil by way of comparison. Both cars are owned since new and serviced bang on 15k km every time, so they were not mistreated. VRs has 187k kms on it now

    My 2016 Scirocco, same engine as used in some of the GTDs, recently started to use oil, all of a sudden. 65k miles.I used Liqui Moly engine flush and it has been gradually improving since. My theory is that the piston rings gum up, allowing oil up in to the chamber but not to drain back.

    I have a few Korean friends in Korea who drive GTDs, and they say that the oil is reduced every 5,000~8,000 kilometres, so they carry a 1L bottle of oil to make up the difference. Roughly speaking, their cars are 2014 or newer, and they are 7th gen. (7.5 gen was never released in Korea because of emissions scandal).

    • @mikereports
      @mikereports  7 днів тому

      Interesting about the emissions and Mk7.5. Some on here have the same oil usage too.

    • @johnsonquinn6455
      @johnsonquinn6455 6 днів тому

      Oh, I see, many GTD fans in Korea are still in love with the GTD despite the oil problem, and many of them install the 7th generation headlights on their 7th generation because they like the design of the 7.5 headlights and the taillights, but they do so despite the hassle of having to remove them again and install the 7th generation lights when the car is inspected every two years.
      Another interesting thing is that almost all cars in Korea are automatic transmissions, and manual transmissions are rarely used. Currently, the percentage of new cars sold in Korea with manual transmissions is said to be around 1%.
      The manual gearbox in your GTD looks great.

    My golf gtd is burning oil like every single 2.0tdi 184hp Audi q3 with has 34k miles is smoking more oil then golf , Skoda kodiaq 2.0tdi 150hp is not smoking oil with for mi is surprise my old a4 b8 2.0tdi 143hp is the best no oil consumption and before remap shows 165hp car has now around 176k so it is lottery.
