The fin on the front of the civic is to trip the win lazer during drag racing. The car stages with the front tires and there is a maximum distance from the tire to the front of the car. At the finish line, every inch matters so the fin is there to make the car have the maximum nose length to trip the light first in a close race. Idk why the car owner didn’t even know what it was for. Odd
I was sort of right I thought it was for the 60foot same thing though I guess sorta 😅 really strange he didn't know though 🤔

That front part is to extend the front of the car, to trigger the timing lights at the end of the quarter mile. Another trick I herd bout, was to put a arm on a hinge and tap your breaks at the end to swing it out. Some call it cheating or w/e, I'm not a track racer so doesn't concern me.

That small black fin on that drag car, is for crossing the line. That fin crosses the line "1st", giving the driver a slight advantage.

Here's a good explanation of how those beam trippers give a slight advantage, For instance Pro Extreme qualified field(adrl) was trapping between 194.35 and 211.69 in the eighth-mile. On the low end, 194 miles an hour is a hair over 285 feet per second. Do the maths, and that means that a 12-inch extension on the front of a car is worth 0.0035 of a second at the stripe.
Maximum front end overhang of 45” as measured from centerline of front spindle. An ADRL accepted extension may be used to reach 45” if the front end overhang of the body is less than 45”...
These can also lose you a race if you don't have it low enough to trip the beam at the end, I've seen it happen when left lane easily won via replay footage at finish line but because the guys beam tripper was too high the guy in the right tripped the beam before he did so right lane wins 🙏🏻 because you go off timing results rather than a video

Wheels trigger the front lights, that's why they use 17's and taller tires these days. The fin is for the end.
