    Waterproof socks are the best invention ever! I've walked 350km through Galicia last year only with a pair of them and trailrunning shoes. Here's the point: if you have waterproof socks, you can wear light shoes with a lot of mesh. If it rains you don't care whether they get wet or not, because a) your feet stay dry anyways and b) they dry A LOT faster than waterproof hiking shoes. So in warm, rainy climate that's the best combination I can think of for long distance hiking. The light shoes usually dry completely until the next morning or, if not, you don't care again: because your socks are waterproof. :D Got the idea from a german recon soldier. Worked very well for me.

      @OuterEdgeOutpost  Місяць тому +1

      Hmm, yeah I thought there must be some secret combination that makes the concept click. Although I wore these for about an hour in my crocs (surely way more ventilated than any shoe) and they were still wet. My feet started to feel like they were suffocating under the wet fabric so I had to take them off...

      @@OuterEdgeOutpost Hmm ... maybe the membrane wasn't very breathable? My socks were from "Sealskinz". Could walk all day in them. Feet dry. Me happy.

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  Місяць тому +1

      They felt fine until they got wet. Water is 100% non-breathable so if you have saturated fabric on the outside, all breathability is gone and they become a rubber sock. That's the confusion for me with all membrane footwear, because if the exterior layer isn't waterproof, then the breathability of the membrane is kinda pointless because it will disappear once the outside layer is wet.

      @@OuterEdgeOutpost Interesting. I didn't encounter these problems in my socks, though. But I also don't have particularly sweaty feet. This calls for deeper investigation. :D

    As a hiker the deal was always keep your boots on when crossing a stream. Spring, full of fast moving cold water. Keep your feet safe and keep your balance with the boots on. Now, on the other side your feet are cold and wet. Set up for hypothermia in the mountains. So this is where waterproof socks come in handy. But take them off so feet don't sweat. This is what I'm guessing they had in mind? Anyone forded? ha ha

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  Місяць тому

      Help me understand this concept though...because all the socks do is keep the water from actually contacting your skin directly. You still have a couple pounds of water from the outer sock fabric and your saturated boots squeezing against your feet, weighing you down, creating friction, and definitely freezing you on a cold hike. So that seems like a bad situation that you'd want to avoid. Might keep your feet SLIGHTLY warmer, but they're still surrounded by a cold, non-breathing layer of water.

    • @debrak3594
      @debrak3594 Місяць тому +1

      @@OuterEdgeOutpost Yes, you would have to take off the waterproof socks on the other side of the stream crossing and put on warm WOOL socks. The wool socks would get damp from the wet boots but wool would still stay warm. The wet boots would be heavier for sure. Hey, but who said hiking was fun?

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  Місяць тому

      That just doesn't make sense to me...going directly into soaking wet boots would surely soak your wool socks as well, so you'd end up almost as wet as if you just wore the wool socks to begin with?

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  Місяць тому +2

      The brand is Connor Hats, it's called...gag...Yogi Beach Boho hat (possibly the worst hat name I've ever seen) I just got it so I can't speak to the durability yet, but it feels pretty rigid compared to a lot of straw hats I've worn. It's woven with twisted braids of straw instead of flat strands and seems to have some kind of stiffening coating. It has a metal wire inside the brim to hold its shape.
      I've been digging this brand mostly because they actually make XL hats for my giant skull. This one fits me perfectly and the hat band is super comfortable. It's a pretty open weave so it does allow some sun to get through, but it's a nice balance between shade and breathability. You forget it's there. I actually bought a second one because I was so pleased with it and wanted to have a backup! :)

Especially with the way they're advertised, all those videos of people splashing through rivers in their hiking boots, like...what?? So now you do the rest of the hike squelching around in saturated boots? Me personally, I'm always trying to find NON-waterproof footwear because it's always less sweaty and waterproofness really only makes sense for short-term activities where you can finish up before your feet start sweating.

    Oh! No money for the review, only the gear... that sucks a little. I mean: you need money more than more stuff to cram into your limited living space, I would guess you're usually a bit choosy of what stuff to add to the Outer Edge Outpost? At least there seems to be some (albeit limited) practical use for the items in your daily life. Go stomp around wet meadows in crocs with those stockings! Or, since wetlands are in short supply up on your ridge, you'll have to have them in waiting until fall/early winter/spring.
    You do get to keep the thingies, right? You're not supposed to add extra cost and energy and time by returning them via Package/postal service??

So maybe, try to see it less like "I am forced to do this" and more "wow, people really just like to see me try stuff out and it makes them smile when I think out loud while doing it". Every product you actually use to survive and build out there should be sponsoring you. Even if it was just free gear/materials, that's less gear you need to spend your money on (e.g. Solar?). You don't have a large following so sell them on the "potential" given your pedigree and that they are getting in early before you become very expensive, etc.
