    Hello everyone!
Here's my new reaction to Eurovision's italian submission. I will share some insight from the music production and composition side and lots of personal opinion.
Super energetic latin/dance track with an excellent vocal performance on stage.

The meaning of the song is autobiographical, she says she carries her traumas with her (she lost her father when she was 13 years old, he was a famous Italian singer who had a heart attack during one of his concerts), suffering makes one appreciate the joys more. We need to accept the ups and downs of life and fight boredom as suffering by always staying active, we need to use these moments in a positive way even if only to reflect on our lives and not remain passive to the point of depression, so the cumbia dance of noia(boredom) is like an invitation to a party to always look for something that makes us feel good.

Thank you for this great explanation. The best I have read so far. It summarizes very well what she meant with this song. Isn't it amazing that, even though she's talking about boredom and suffering, she takes you to dancing? She's amazing!

The title is not "the cumbia of Noia (boredom)" but "La Noia" because the term cumbia was used as a metaphor for the meaning of the song, not for the sound. But you made a perfect analysis, the idea for this song came from watching a tarantella in southern Italy and from here they added a fusion of styles that your super ear identified precisely.

I'd like to point out that cumbia is mentioned in the song not because the song is musically a cumbia... (and it isn't a cumbia) in some cultures singing/dancing a cumbia is a way to chase off evil/negativity whatever. In the same way Angelina says she dances a cumbia that's the only way to stop boredom and doesn't matter if she stumbles because that will stop boredom too. My understanding from her lyrics knowing her history is that her use of the word "noia" i.e. boredom is not lack of fun but more anxiety or sadness, depression. I imagine people took pity in her because she lost her father the way she did, they expected her to be damaged and act consequently but she doesn't want to be, she wants to celebrate life, make a party every time she feels "la noia",... when.she says "some people only see evil.in things and I want to run as soon as they start talking I want to tell them I'm fine but they give ne the stink-eye so I just say life is hard" that what she refers to imo. Also the first verse is again referring to her "anxiety" and "hunger" for life..."the drawings she's done are not coming alive the page is lazy but she is in a rush because she's been told Life is precious and she proudly wears it head held high although her necklace (i.e. her life) it's not done with wisdom pearls... she's been given the one for traumatized little girls made of coloured beads to unroll while growing up...and yet I am a Pasqua (Italian saying referring to Pasqua i.e. Easter being a celebration and so representing supposedly happiness), look, zero drama, I'm considering moving to a new city again because staying still get me bored". And the last most beautiful verse imo... "I die without dieing because it makes the days more human, I live because suffering makes joys greater, we can only laugh in these burnt nights, a crown of thorns will be the dresscode for my party". Deep meaningful lyrics sang with lively energy to a rhythmic cheerful music to celebrate life is Angelina's mood.

      @tecnointellego 18 днів тому +1

yes, I agree with some comments that have been made.. when he talks about the "cumbia of boredom", he is not talking about the musical genre of his song. The text is an elaborate and profound text. in this song there are musical influences from Mediterranean and Latin cultures. An Italian also notes in these influences the sounds and influences of southern Italian music. Italy, being at the center of the Mediterranean, has taken and adapted various influences from northern Europe, as well as from the East and Africa. The music of southern Italy has marked influences of Hispanic, oriental and African music. This is because it has been influenced by these peoples for centuries. Now in this piece there is a purposeful research into that music, and together with the influence of the music of southern Italy, which as I was saying, is already a syncretism of music and sounds of the Mediterranean cultures... has created a piece musically very interesting, danceable but thoroughly intelligent, elaborate; Not only does firing scream energy and volume, but there's depth behind those notes. And if we talk about the text there is still much more to say. But I'll let someone else talk about it. We talk about boredom, but in a positive light... if I can summarize... falling into boredom will produce positive effects... and the term cumbia is linked to this falling into boredom. The text is deep, meaningful. if we then know the history of this girl's family... then the depth of the text takes on even more meaning

Sorry for 2nd comment just to add a characteristic of Sanremo festival is that all the songs are performed 100% live with the live orchestra even the backing vocals are live, there are vocalists on one side of the stage and all te songs have to be rearranged for this reason that is why several different orchestra directora alternate during each evening of the event and the director is introduced together with the singer, the song title and its authors.

I know, i have read about San Remo, Still there are samples being used. It might be simply triggered by one of the keyboard players or simply a backing track (look at the director wearing headphones, that's to hear the click and have the orchestra in sync with the backing track)

I listened to and watched the videos of at least 25 songs out of 37 that will participate in Eurovision 2024, and I am convinced that only a few songs could remain etched in the memory or be danced by people in disco clubs... This Mediterranean-South American style rhythm is suitable for both couple dances and single moves, and despite a certain skepticism from Northern European countries, I believe this song will be contagious and Angelina Mango could easily reach the top 5 positions. ❤💯💥💃

Yes (what a lot here are making the correct point on), the lyrics aren’t saying “this is a Cumbria .. “ , it’s specific to THIS song that it’s about her need to find joy and interest in life .. the “Cumbia” symbolising her joy …
I get what you mean by “ok then I’ll write a song called “I’m singing this Waltz” yet the songs in a 4:4, but that’s not what this is about …
It’s far, far deeper than that for the lyrics.
In the same vein, she’s not got audio of a pen signing a contract, she’s not on stage WEARING a crown of thorns .. and the song isn’t called “Dance with me while I Cumbia at you” … it’s called “The Boredom”..
That it has elements of a Cumbia is great, but I don’t think they are trying to pass it off as one ..
I think it’s absolutely fine and doesn’t take away from the masterpiece it is .. and as a Eurovision song (which is not the primary focus of San Remo .. winning San Remo is, which she totally deserved ), then 3 mins is hard to get ANYTHING “across” to garner votes and this is by far the classiest thing in the contest.
It’ll grow on you and you’ll find yourself inappropriately mumbling “total!” in a supermarket and your woes of Cumbia/not a Cumbia will melt away to the deeper meaning of the song . You’ll see! :)

This is an autobiographical song that tells how Angelina faced her traumas and learned to live with them. In this case cumbia is the funeral rite with which she suppresses boredom (intended as internal discomfort, apathy and depression). The song is neither about boredom nor about cumbia, they are all allegories for a much deeper theme linked to youth discomfort and depression following a serious trauma and pain. In fact Angelina won three awards at Sanremo, in addition to the festival she won an award for the lyrics and another for the music.

Don't misunderstood, there is symbolism here. The cumbia was mentioned because the lyrics want to emphasize the FUNERAL of boredom (noia), the cumbia being originally intended for funerals, as you may know.
By the way, in Italy we use the word TARANTELLA in the same way, to describe a certain situation. In Italian culture is normal to borrow musical symbols in everyday speeches.

No the discourse is different.... if one spoke in the song of Cumbia and then played, for example, the tarantella then I would give you all the reason in the world... but if one uses Cumbia as a metaphor to indicate a lucubrious state of death then it is different. I think even in the English language there are metaphors, allegories, similes and idioms as in Italian. So the comparison you made does not hold up. You don't need to show us what cumbia is.
If you read the lyrics you'll understand that cumbia isn't the main thing.
So don't concentrate all your energies on cumbia

Some notes and answers to your doubts:
    - 11.09 The wind instrument used to enchant snakes is not North African but from India, it is called Pungi (or also Been or Tiktiri), the sound you hear in the song obviously comes from a synthesizer. However there are many wind instruments, with or without reed, which have a sound similar to that and which are used in the ethnic music of Western Asia (Iran, Azerbaijan etc etc)
    - It seems to me that many have already told you, it is not a Cumbia, Cumbia is mentioned in the lyrics and mentioned rhythmically and melodically in a few short musical passages, the song is a bit of a "minestrone" in which the Latin America, Spain, the Mediterranean countries and especially the south of Italy, I see that you know Tarantella, here there is a "smell" of PIzzica and Taranta (which resembles Tarantella but is different). "The Cumbia della noia" is a verse that above all works rhythmically and sounds good, as well as giving meaning to the text, the actual Latin dance is only evoked, cited, rather than used "rigorously" to construct the piece.
    - In San Remo the backing tracks are limited to a minimum, they try to avoid them as much as possible given that the live orchestra is large and complete, including almost all the instruments of the symphony orchestra plus a rhythm section, electric instruments, synthesizers and a vocal choir of 6 singers, the headphones worn by the orchestra conductors serve to give them the clean and mixed signal that will be broadcast without the acoustic problems, if the conductor listened to them directly, given the needs of the scenography and aesthetics in which not all instruments are positioned in an acoustically ideal manner.
In La Noia it seems to me that everything is live including the most synthesized sounds, while in other songs presented at the Festival there was a little bit of backing track, but always very little.

I discovered Angelina Mango a few weeks ago thanks to Spotify. I had no idea who she was and that she won some Sanremo Festival.
Similarly, I came across Maneskin a few years back before they made a name for themselves at Eurovision and suddenly they were everywhere (although I'm not a native Italian so I like their Italian sung songs better).
I also recommend to look at the singer Francesca Michielin
Angela's voice appealed to me immediately.
I recently created a playlist on Spotify where I planned to add all the songs I like from her and I found out that I have all the songs she has on Spotify on there.
Her song "La noia" is one of the less interesting songs.
    Great song is "Rituali"
I recommend her first album, "Monolocale" ua-cam.com/video/CqpBhVdguSA/v-deo.html which is an absolutely amazing and wonderfully melancholic album throughout.
    Special tracks:
    Iron Man
    Treno in corsa
    Va tutto bene
Also EP: Voglia di vivere ua-cam.com/video/sagx_4ioTEk/v-deo.html
    especially the second half.

@@patroden it is true that some sounds are not created by humans with acoustic instruments, but there is not only a classical music orchestra but also other components, such as those used in rock (guitar, bass, drums).
In fact, certain sounds are created live by a keyboardist who plays an electronic keyboard with specially created electronic sound effects (these sounds are created previously, but are played live and not inserted from a pre-recorded base).
I don't know exactly how these sounds work, perhaps some musical accompaniment is pre-recorded and inserted manually live during the performance, but there certainly isn't an entire pre-recorded backing track that accompanies the entire song.
You also referred to acoustic guitar and electric bass sounds. Near the orchestra, there are musicians who play the instruments live, even if for a few seconds.
This live performance has been obligatory for many years for all participants in the Sanremo singing festival.
Thank you for your technical analysis.
I've seen many reaction videos to this song, but only a few were commented by knowledgeable people like you.

    ... Cuántos dibujos he hecho
Me quedo aquí y los miro
    Ninguno cobra vida
    Esta página es perezosa
    Tengo prisa

    Total
Ah, es la cumbia del aburrimiento
    Es la cumbia del aburrimiento
    Total
    ...¿así que escribes canciones?
    Sí, canciones de amor.
    Y no quiero aburrirte

In the song she's telling a story, not necessarily saying she's singing a cumbia. The fact the word cumbia is mentioned, is simply a part of the lyrics of the song. It's odd how you sometimes jump to conclusions from just one element without knowing the context. Perhaps next time find yourself a translation of the song?

    • @patroden
      @patroden  2 місяці тому

      Hey Dani!
Look, I tried checking the translations with other songs (check my reaction to the Norwegian song), but the translated words and verses won't necessarily guarantee that i will understand it.
Like you say, the cultural context is more than 50% of the meaning to it, and that can only be explained by people who speak the language natively with all of the cultural references around every word.
I didn't know that in Italy you use the word "cumbia" to describe a feeling until I made this reaction and people started to explain it to me.
Imagine me reading the lyrics translated without context, I would still not get the meaning of that word in your culture :)

@@patroden - OK, fair enough... I didn't know cumbia was a word used to describe a feeling, either, but the whole context of the song's lyrics suggested it to me anyway. It's a poetic license, let's say, a metaphor and I got it just from listening to the song in its entirety. But even so, maybe there is a cultural barrier after all. Anyway, I enjoy your reactions and have watched several of them!

LA NOIA / TRANSLATED IN ENGLISH
    The drawings I've made
I stay here and I look at them
    None of them comes alive
    This page is lazy
    I'm in a hurry
And they told me that life is precious
I wear it on my neck head-on
My necklace has no pearls of wisdom
They gave me the colorful beads
For messed up girls with traumas
To unravel little by little with age
And yet I'm happy as a clam, look, zero dramas
    I may change cities again
Because staying still makes me, makes me
    [Refrain]
    Bored
    Bored
    Bored
    Bored
    [Pre-Chorus]
    I die without dying
    In these used up days
    I live without suffering
    There's no bigger cross
All we can do is laugh
    On these burnt up nights
    A crown of thorns
Will be the dress-code for my party
    [Chorus]
Ah, it's the cumbia of boredom, mhm
It's the cumbia of total boredom
Ah, it's the cumbia of boredom, oh, oh
It's the cumbia of total boredom
    [Verse 2]
The people that see the evil in things
It makes you want to flee as soon as they start to speak
And I'd like to tell them that I'm fine, but then they glare at me
So I say that it's hard to live
    Business, you talk about business
In the meantime, I close my eyes to sign contracts
Mhm, princess, he calls you "princess"
So stop washing the dishes now
    [Pre-Chorus]
    I die without dying
    In these used up days
    I live without suffering
    There's no bigger cross
All we can do is laugh
    On these burnt up nights
    A crown of thorns
Will be the dress-code for my party
    [Chorus]
Ah, it's the cumbia of boredom, mhm, oh
It's the cumbia of total boredom
Ah, it's the cumbia of boredom, huh
It's the cumbia of total boredom
    [Bridge]
    So you write songs?
    Yes, love songs
And I don't want to bore you
But someone's got to sing them
    Cumbia, I dance the cumbia
If I risk tripping, at least I'll stop the boredom
So I throw a party, throw a party
Because it's the only way to stop getting
    To stop getting
    To stop getting, ah
    [Refrain]
    Bored
    Bored
    Bored
    Bored
    [Pre-Chorus]
    I die because dying
    Makes the days more human
    I live because suffering
    Leads to the greatest joys
All we can do is laugh
    On these burnt up nights
    A crown of thorns
Will be the dress-code for my party
    [Chorus]
Ah, it's the cumbia of boredom, ah
It's the cumbia of total boredom
Ah, it's the cumbia of boredom, oh, ah
It's the cumbia of total boredom

  • @danielacalfapietro8727
    @danielacalfapietro8727 18 днів тому

The "Cumbia" here is a linguistic pretext, a kind of word in loan, which sounds good, to indicate a song which with its rhythm exorcises an evil of living, oppression, boredom, precisely, which comes from the outside, suffocating, pervasive, which adds to the internal suffering, to one's own traumas and sorrows, but finds its overcoming, its catharsis, in the very rhythm of the music, in the dance itself that arises from it. The type of music sung by Angelina Mango refers, especially in the enthralling turn of the refrain, to the ancient culture of some popular dances, halfway between the traditional and the esoteric, such as the Pizzica Pugliese, the dance of the tarantate, women who danced until to exhaustion to free themselves of a melancholy that prevented them from living, to the sound of hypnotic and ritual music. In Southern Italy there are many: many Tarantellas, the Pizzica of the lower and upper Salento and the Tarantella of the Gargano, which are precisely from Puglia, the Calabrian Tarantella, Saltarella and Zumbarella Molisane, Tammuriata Campana, Tarantella dei Pastori, in Basilicata, are just a few. Angelina Mango is originally from Basilicata, a beautiful region, and brings with her the rhythms of these ancient and millenary dances.

All songs are unreleased and unknown! 😮
    Only the title is known.
No one other than the producer and the festival organizers can know the lyrics or the musical score.
None of the audience or press officers can hear a single second of the song before the first live night of the Festival.
If any of these things happen, the song is disqualified.

You are looking for cumbia sound in this song... Of course you are right and this is not cumbia but you should point your attention on the words "cumbia della noia" (cumbia of boredom). Cumbia is a socializing dance, couples or groups of people dancing together, something that has nothing to do with boredom. Singing cumbia of boredom, actually, has nothing to do with the sound of the song but with the meaning of the text. If you traslate it you will understand better.

I think maybe It took a trumpet sample heavily cutted low frequencies. There's One thing that I don't like really: I don't Heart orchestra, except the strings slow chords during the middle sections. The real problem with San Remo Festival is that all the songs must have orchestra, but for me this Is a Song more with samples and loops than acustics instruments.

It's not a trumpet, it's a Been or Pungi from India.

It's not cumbia, it's not Spanish guitar, it's not electronic, it's simply the very popular southern Italian TARANTELLA PIZZICA, simply Italian folk music with modern arrangement,
It has existed for a few hundred years

Great and instructive reaction...like other musicians I've found this song very interesting and worth analysing. It's kind of organic full of surprises like her performance too with plenty of nuances and gestures which grabbed my attention from start to end.
I get your point about the lack of Cumbia...but at least it isn't mentioned in the title (it's La Noia...not La Cumbia Della Noia) - and being italian I wasn't able to understand she was singing "cumbia" - some made a funny rendition and change in "Cuoia" ua-cam.com/video/8RL1-yu4wko/v-deo.html (have a laugh).
