Hi Ben, Location has been my biggest problem with growing carrots. After relocating three of my raised beds, which I hope I never have to do again, I got that problem solved. I’ve tried Purple Dragon carrots, Atomic Red, Yellow, and a bunch of others. Imperator gives a long, narrow root. New Kuroda does well for me, but I like a bigger carrots. Danvers carrots give me a decent size root, a carrot that Bugs Bunny would enjoy eating. It is my go to carrot. I plant in the winter and fall. In the fall, I don’t sow seeds for them until the temperatures are in the 70s for at least two weeks, and I cover them with shade cloth until the mid 80s are behind me. I plant turnips, parsnips, and beets at the same time. In the winter, I sow seeds after the worst of the freezing temperatures have passed, usually around February 20th. This is also when I sow seeds for cools season root crops, peas, and plant a lot of my seed starts. Between February 20th and March 1st, is my busiest planting time of the year. It is also time to start tending my fruit trees. Cedar Gal Rust is a big problem in my area. It is easier to prevent it from spreading to my apple trees, than to try to cure it.
Hey there. I take about 1" soil in a small tray..sprinkle my carrots on it...Place them in a baggie...then put them in the freezer for 24 huors...no more..no less. Then place them on the seedlings table they sprout in about 4-6 days...then take them and broadcast them to the area where they are then covered and water in.....
Got stuck at a doc app n missed this one. We have a decent carrot plot going. I can remember my dad hated carrots bc of how tedious they were as in thinning like 2 or 3 times b4 getting to the final product. Too much rain and they went all to crap, too little and they suffered badly with growth. As is with most of gardening, all of it can suck at some point lol
@ I have to say out of everything my wife and grow in our garden carrots are the hardest for me by far and I know one season I will get it , what was the hardest for you in the beginning and still hard for you ? You know growing citrus is no problem. We have oranges., and several types of lemons and limes I got those no problem, but it’s carrots. I cannot grow at all. , and we are here at Ft . Bragg N.C.
