  • 💉 How did we get addicted to growth? How did we get addicted to a concept such as GDP when its creator warned us that we shouldn’t use to value our prosperity. Over the years, we know the problems, we even know the solutions, yet we don’t manage to move ahead. So what is wrong? What is stopping us from moving ahead? There are some underlying problems with our addiction we need to address if we want to move forward.
🎓 To discuss this addiction and how to get out of it I have immense pleasure to talk with Robert Constanza. Bob, is Professor of Ecological Economics at the Institute for Global Prosperity at the University College London. His transdisciplinary research integrates the study of humans and the rest of nature to address research, policy and management issues at multiple time and space scales, from small watersheds to the global system. He has notably contributed to the development of concepts such as the valuation of ecosystem services and the planetary boundaries. His latest book called Addicted to Growth - Societal Therapy for a Sustainable Wellbeing Future just came out.

Merci ! En effet, beaucoup plus revigorant que des récessions continues et répétées.

Well clearly the problem is that the people in power are perfectly happy with our current trajectory. So the climate solutions that we should adopt from local areas (like in the movie 2040) are solutions where local populations overcame entrenched capitalist interests. So for instance, developed countries/cities where animal consumption was drastically reduced, fights with oil companies stopping pipelines were won, etc. Not places where solar happened to be the cheapest option, cities got more water-efficient, etc.

Indeed, clearly there is a resistance by the people in power to change the trajectory, and just buying ourselves out of climate breakdown is not an option.

Danger ...SOS...we need a change in our society worldwide, we do not need economic growth, we do not need all the foods on offer in supermarkets, we do not need multiple armies, we only need one to suppress all war. We do not need to travel worldwide? We do not need to mine pristine forests and seas. We do not need wealth, look at the shaolin monk. We can have a heaven upon the earth and still explore the universe inside and outside. Follow this and all will be well. Green Guardian

Problem is, you have to get rid of exponential growth drivers... compound interest, corporate profit... rentier income! But geuss who holds political power? That, is the problem: a parasitic bourgeoisie.
