Aloha! I just bought your books and have begun reading them -- I even got a discount code for them. Thank you so much for your continued motivation and for putting out this well-thought-out content. None of the fluff but applicable research tools are needed for my PhD journey. Many of us need to take breaks from writing, and it's nice to watch your videos to help me remain focused -- you know how we get side tracked on social media and such -- at least I'm focusing on paper writing tools. I appreciate your work and how much you have been sharing!
Its nice though to be able to create things yourself. Its not hard to become good at writing, but you need to find your favourite writers and absorb their patterns, then develop your own. Like you develop an opinion on writing and this becomes your writing style. The brain does the magic of applying unseen rules of that style which are just sense or sensation for you. Though you may develop the system or thesis of that writing style eventually. What I like AI to do is index the research papers by section and paragraph numbers with a sentence or summary on that paragraph, that allows me to zone in on the areas without having to read everything. An ideal AI would create a database of indexed papers. I like to read myself as I think the AI can lack depth and sensitivity my finer faculties possess. Like I can reflect in a deep slumber the things I read.
Andy, kudos to you for creating such content! I absolutely admire your hardwork that goes into creating these videos. Although, I do agree with some other comments that the citation game needs to level up quite a bit but being a researcher, we also need to use AI by coupling it with our cognitive skills alongside. This is fab work & thank you!
I bought this recently. I’m trying to figure out research on chronic fatigue research so I can get better. So much research is starting to be done and my doctor is clueless
This website is really bad with picking citation out of PDFs. I’ve used it last week and it selects random paragraphs in the text that have no connection to what AI gives you

You can probably answer that question yourself by learning about the AI ethics rules of your institution and the journal that you want submit the article to.
@truss3518, Research Gate started allowing failed studies to be uploaded and they don’t separate them--there is nothing to let you know that it failed. Use it with caution, and don’t trust anything dated from 2019 through to the present. There are several articles on this issue. They should be fairly easy to find (I use Start Page search engine, not Google.)
Too cool. Now, the pièce de résistance would be if they could just generate a 3D AI clone equipped with all of the necessary skills to pass your comprehensive exams and final dissertation defense for you- thus sparing you the uncomfortable experience of having to admit in-person to your committee that you lack any true in-depth understanding of your research topic and lied your ass off about the dissertation being 100% your own work.
I don't understand how science researchers would want AI for the writing part. That's where you expose and explain your work! Why would you want an automatic machine to do it for you? 💀 I really do not get it. For the part of the research i understand, there are so many papers to go through that some AI filters are useful. But then, for the interpretation? Asking AI to summarize? 🤷🏻♀️ I don't get it again. It's not like AI understands the nuace necessary when analyzing a paper, to actual see if it's valid. Using AI for these things is like asking someone without science/research background to do it for you. They can make things superficially make sense, but they lack the knowledge to actually understand in depths what's going on, and that will eventually show
We are tired of writing bs introduction about climate change, other people's paper in the field reviewing it. We just want to write methodology, results, discussion/interpretation. Medical field are much better at publishing the essentials. But the journals all want this crap while charging for open publications
@@ameerracle Honest question: if you copy your Own introduction from another paper You Wrote, is it plagiarism? Because I get that the introduction in two different papers about the same topic will probably start with exactly the same information, and it's a waste of time to try and rewrite the same thing just for the sake of being different. Not to mention, if you gave yourself the trouble to write something organized and in an efficient way...why change it ☹️
@@dekev7503 actually, I have a master in chemical engineering, even though I don't work as such. But I know being an engineer and being in academic are two different things. If you want to be a researcher, you need to plan and do research, interpret papers, plan experiments, interpret experiment results, and finally, expose your work, which is where you tie everything together, make conclusions and tie everything together. Only those who didn't do a diligent job in the other steps would think they have nothing to say/an AI would be able to expose what they did best.
Game-changer indeed! but for whom? You are risking a lot by uploading your own material into a database that will use your data to tune their algorithm. While you might achieve publication eventually, you could jeopardize your academic integrity in the process. Ppl are warned in my univeristy not to use Otter just for similar risks and shady privacy issues. and if you talk with your legal and data science department, you will see that the next generation of AI solutions will catch everone who are doing these borderline cheating practices. True, but research should be about creating NEW knowledge. Let the AI deal with the old stuff - let computers do what computers are good at, so that the human beings can do the new stuff. Hopefully this will allow us humans to focus on NEW knowledge and ideas.

Hi @Andy. Just love your reviews and tips! If I should invest in only one academic AI tool (besides ChatGPT) which one would you suggest?
Is this good for humanities subjects and can it be used instead of Claude for example, to write papers?

True that.
I have the same experience with you. Also I tried Scite, it cited paragraph not accurately. Lets back to academic manual labor that has been proven.
