  • In this video I will show you how to paint a bright sunset and I will show you how to paint the bright sun in a way that it looks like it’s popping off the canvas.
This painting is inspired by a place called Port Soif on the island of Guernsey which is located in the English Channel.

Absolutely beautiful Sam, you really are an amazing artist. Could I ask, why do you leave the canvas white but some artist like your friend Mr T 😁 use an under painting. Is it just personal preference, I would love to know so I can learn more. Thank you 😊

Thank you! I do both, if you look back at my earlier videos you'll see that I used a toned canvas. It's only recently that I have been painting on a white surface again and this is because I have been experimenting. For one reason I love these oil primed linen panels. Another reason I have noticed my colours look a little cleaner and that my values haven't been coming out so dark. I like both methods of painting, a toned canvas and a white canvas, I'm just mixing it up a bit. 😊

@@SamuelEarpArtist thanks Sam that’s really helpful and makes total sense. I think I might do a test to see which I prefer 😆 although it will be great for different atmospheres, mmmmmm got my arty mojo flowing now!!! Keep up the great work and thanks again 👍

Hey Samuel I really appreciate your art
I want to ask you what mediums do you use and what do you use to clean your paint brushes... Do you use turpentine or anything else?
And can turpentine can also be used to thin oil paint and can turpentine also be used to give a base brown coat like you do?

    • @ok-jz7vu

It will be great if you make a particular video on it please...

I clean my paint brushes with gum turps in my studio or I use kerosene if I am out in the field painting en plein air. Once I have cleaned them I condition my brushes with artist soap.
You can use gum turps to thin the paint however you might like to try Windsor and Newton's Liquin Original which is an alkyd resin which you can use to thin the paint and it speeds up the drying time 😊
